Vaikalafi Lutui (b. March 3, 1987) was a pleasant surprise last year. I kept my expectations low because you never know how first-year JUCO players will adapt to Big 12 football, but he emerged as a capable cohort to Ray Kibble.
Now he'll be counted on to produce even more in the wake of Kibble's graduation. With so much uncertainty through the rest of the defensive tackle depth chart, Lutui needs to be a rock in the middle for the Cats.
In 2011, Lutui accounted for 34 total tackles (22 solo, 12 assisted), 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, four pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Not bad for a guy learning on the job and raising a family.
