The Bat Cats open Big 12 Tournament play at 12:30 p.m. today against top-seeded Baylor. K-State will need to win the conference tournament if it hopes to advance to the NCAA Tournament again this season.

Big 12 Expansion

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds is not in favor of Big 12 expansion, but admits the conference has talked with Notre Dame. After the comment against expansion came out, Blatant Homerism blistered Texas for Dodds' stance on Twitter.

Mellinger reacts to the new agreement between the Big 12 and the SEC. In particular, he wonders if Missouri now regrets its decision to jump given that the Big 12 is now stable, and takes KU to task for its continued refusal to play Missouri. Gabe DeArmond felt compelled to justify Missouri's exit. I have enough to say on this issue that it could probably be a full post, but I don't know if I'll ever write it.

Spencer brings in a guest columnist to describe how the Big East died, and was dead all along. Keep this in mind when everyone tells you the SEC is the predominant league that that it will always be this way: it wasn't always this way.

Writing and Reading Level

The Harvard College Sports Analysis blog developed a formula to determine the reading level at which various writers write. In this post, they applied to formula to sports writing. None of it is really surprising, given that journalists are generally taught to write to a low reading level to keep news stories accessible to the broadest possible audience.
