There's no controversy this year. No torches and pitchforks for bowls that would pass up top-10 K-State for Michigan or Virginia Tech. The Wildcats are Big 12 champions and have the conference's automatic bid to the Fiesta Bowl. The opponent will be the Oregon Ducks. A month ago, we had hoped to play the Ducks in Miami for the national championship. Playing them in Arizona instead isn't a bad consolation prize. In other news, as noted in the link above, it looks like Northern Illinois will be BCS eligible by finishing 15th in the BCS standings. That knocks Oklahoma out of a Sugar Bowl berth and deprives the Big 12 of two BCS participants again. Yes, the conference that finished No. 1 in Sagarin's conference rankings has only one BCS participant. Thanks a lot, Nebraska. The Fiesta Bowl will be played January 3, 2013, in Glendale, Ariz. We'll have a lot more on the matchup with Oregon in the next month. For now, celebrate the Big 12 championship and hope we get healthy between now and then. If we can't, the rushing plays to the edge that Texas used to gain big chunks of yardage will seem like no big deal compared to what the Ducks do. The BCS Selection Shows are at 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., CST, on ESPN.
