#38 Matthew Pearson |
Position: Defensive Back Previous College: Hutchinson Community College Projection: Third-String Status: On Scholarship |
Matthew David Pearson (b. Oct. 25, 1989) came to K-State as a JUCO cornerback, but he spent most of spring practice in 2011 at safety.
What is unknown is whether that represented a permanent position change or if it merely was necessitated in order to have sufficient bodies at safety, given the unavailability of Tysyn Hartman and Ty Zimmerman in the spring game.
Considering it was Pearson's second spring (he came in early last year as a winter graduate), but he has failed to make a significant impact to date at cornerback, it might be the former.
However, our cornerback depth is shaky enough on paper that it's probably the latter. We wouldn't have brought in so many JUCO corners if we felt comfortable with the returning depth there.
And we're stacked at safety, although the quality of depth behind the aforementioned Hartman and Zimmerman is uncertain. Either way, mark Pearson down as a versatile backup who can play any of the four secondary positions.
But until he shows something in live game action, I'll guess he plays sparingly as a third-stringer at any of the four.
