RPI WATCH: 1/28/2011

The fall of the Gonzaga empire was punctuated with a muffled thud Thursday night, which was the sound of Saint Mary's winning in Spokane for the first time in more than 15 years and only the second Bulldogs loss at The Kennel in 10 years of conference play.

As a result, Gonzaga almost certainly will not win an 11th straight regular-season West Coast Conference championship.

Furthermore, the Zags very well might have to win their conference tournament simply to reach the NCAA Tournament, because of the five non-conference losses they suffered in addition to this current three-game losing streak.

Clearly, the loss was damaging to K-State, as well, because Gonzaga is our best win, but is in danger of falling out of "quality win" status.

That damage was mitigated somewhat last night by wins from Duke, Loyola and UMKC, however.
