RPI WATCH: 1/23/2011

As is usual for Sunday recaps, I will discuss non-conference results only because conference games will be covered in BIG 12 OUTLOOK tonight.

It largely was a positive Saturday for us, which will be increasingly important if K-State continues to falter.

Only a strong non-conference resume will keep us on the right side of the bubble if we keep dropping conference games like we have been.

Yesterday's winners were Duke, Emporia State, Florida, Loyola, North Florida, Presbyterian, Texas Southern (still undefeated in SWAC play), UMKC, UNLV (its first conference win at home this season) and Virginia Tech.

Of the losers, Alcorn State is of little concern because the Braves are abysmal, but the real disappointments came from an opponent named after a president and two more that hail from a state named after a different president.

James Madison's two-point home loss to George Mason means the Dukes have dropped two straight CAA games, which all but eliminates them from the conference race thanks to their tiebreaker loss to Old Dominion.

Likewise, Gonzaga has dropped two straight conference road games this week — its first loss at Santa Clara in 11 years and yesterday's disaster at San Francisco, a somewhat abominable team, in overtime.

And then there's Washington State. Our win in Pullman looks a little less impressive when Arizona can waltz in, two days removed from a beat-down in Seattle, and win by two. The Cougars now are 4-4 in a watered-down Pac-10.
