RPI WATCH: 1/1/2010

Welcome to the first RPI WATCH of the new year!

It just goes from bad to worse for the almost certainly NIT-bound Oklahoma Sooners, who actually turned in a halfway respectable loss to the best team on their non-conference schedule -- for all the good it did them. But hey, at least Tiny Gallon put on a show, right?

Meanwhile, Ooey-Pooey netted a nice road win over Ipfoo and former K-State player Deilvez Yearby. The Jaguars are 3-0 and in first place in the Summit League. Perhaps that win at Sprint Center was better than we gave it credit for at the time.

Loyola of Chicago also grabbed a hard-fought win over a conference foe, downing Wright State by a point. That keeps Loyola in contention in the Horizon League. It's looking more and more as though the high RPIs of IUPUI and Loyola are not a fluke, and they might remain Top 100 for a while.

One damaging loss for us was Washington State's home defeat by Oregon. The Cougars pretty much got screwed out of a win in the first overtime, but they certainly didn't channel that adversity well, falling in the second overtime. It would be nice if the Coogs could step up and win a crappy Pac-10, but they're probably still too young to beat the likes of Cal, USC and Washington.
