K-State Announces Extension for John Currie


Kansas State University President Kirk Schulz announced today that Athletic Director John Currie has signed a contract extension through the 2018 academic year, a move that recognizes the success of the department under Currie's leadership while providing continuity as K-State surges forward toward its vision of a model intercollegiate athletics program.

Groundbreaking Ceremony Announced for WSC Project


Thanks to the generosity and leadership of K-Staters worldwide, Kansas State officially will move forward and break ground April 28 on the West Stadium Center project at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, prior the 2012 Purple-White game. The ceremonial shovel turning, featuring President Kirk Schulz, Athletic Director John Currie, head football coach Bill Snyder and other special guests, will be approximately 11:30 a.m. on the west side of the stadium.

K-State to Hold BBTF Groundbreaking Ceremony


A ceremonial groundbreaking to officially kick off the construction phase of K-State’s Basketball Training Facility project will be held Saturday morning, prior to the Wildcats’ basketball doubleheader, athletics department officials announced Tuesday. The public ceremony, featuring President Kirk Schulz, Athletic Director John Currie, head basketball coaches Frank Martin and Deb Patterson, and lead contributors Rand Berney, Patti Berney, Jim Johnson and Laura Johnson will begin at approximately 9:05 a.m. on the east lawn of Bramlage Coliseum, following a private program for donors to the project. Both events will be streamed live at k-statesports.com as part of the K-State All-Access platform, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Berney Family Contributes $5 Million to K-State


Rand and Patti Berney, of Bartlesville, Okla., have made a $5 million commitment to Kansas State University to establish the Berney Family Capital Project Fund, which was presented to President Kirk Schulz and Athletic Director John Currie at Saturday’s K-State-Oklahoma State football game. The fund will provide support for the two highest-priority capital projects on K-State’s Manhattan campus, and will be directed by Schulz for the renovation and maintenance of the K-State Welcome Center in Memorial Stadium and the initial construction of the K-State Basketball Training Facility.

Schulz, Currie Pleased with Big 12 Resolution


The Big 12 Conference announced it has reached an agreement with the University of Nebraska and the University of Colorado regarding their withdrawal from the conference effective June 30, 2011, subject to final approval from the member institutions’ respective governing boards. K-State President Kirk Schulz, who serves as a member of the conference board of directors, and Athletic Director John Currie are pleased with the resolution and look forward to the future of the Big 12 Conference beginning in 2011-12.

I don't normally promote the K-State Sports Extras, even though I read them every day, because I'm not a huge fan of Mark Janssen's writing style or his tendency to regurgitate stuff we already know. But this entry is pure, unadulterated Kirk Schulz, and it's absolutely worth reading. Our university is in very good hands, I believe.

K-State to Study Athletics for NCAA Certification


Kansas State University President Kirk Schulz announced today that K-State is beginning a year-long, campus-wide effort to study its athletics program as part of the regularly scheduled NCAA Division I athletic certification process. "Specific areas the study will cover are governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, gender/diversity and student-athlete well-being," Schulz said.

"Kansas State University remains firmly committed to the Big 12 and continues to believe in the long-term viability of our league," said K-State President Kirk Schulz. "We are optimistic that this process will result in our existing membership affirming our cohesive long-term future together."
