A ceremonial groundbreaking to officially kick off the construction phase of K-State’s Basketball Training Facility project will be held Saturday morning, prior to the Wildcats’ basketball doubleheader, athletics department officials announced Tuesday. The public ceremony, featuring President Kirk Schulz, Athletic Director John Currie, head basketball coaches Frank Martin and Deb Patterson, and lead contributors Rand Berney, Patti Berney, Jim Johnson and Laura Johnson will begin at approximately 9:05 a.m. on the east lawn of Bramlage Coliseum, following a private program for donors to the project. Both events will be streamed live at k-statesports.com as part of the K-State All-Access platform, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson on Thursday announced the signing of two players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period from Nov. 10 to Nov. 17. The two new additions to the Wildcat roster in 2011-12 are guard Haley Texada and guard Ashia Woods.

Brittany Chambers scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and Kansas State used a late second-half surge to pull away from Indiana State for a 64-48 win Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum. Kansas State held a 45-40 advantage with 5:49 remaining in the contest, but the Wildcats went on a 19-8 run to close out the game and move to 3-0 for the eighth time in head coach Deb Patterson's 15 years at the helm of the Wildcat program.

We don't talk about women's basketball much around here — and probably will even less in 2010, because they're enduring a difficult rebuilding season even as the men experience a breakthrough season — but this accomplishment deserves recognition. I can't think of a better lady to teach future players than the best damned point guard of any gender ever to play in the state of Kansas. Good hire, Deb.
