'Big Ten, Pac-12 suspend plans for scheduling collaboration' - well, there's a disappointing email subject line.

Remember the plan for Big Ten and Pac-12 to play each other in the regular season every year? It's off now.
The Pac-12 began setting the stage for this a few weeks ago as the playoff was taking shape. With nine conference games, the Pac-12 has every team in the league committed to more tough games than any conference that doesn't have nine-game schedules. Adding this arrangement would basically mean a 10-game conference schedule (only one of them doesn't matter towards the league title).
The Pac-12 only wanted to go forward with this if there was going to be a firm strength of schedule component to the playoff selection process. With this agreement being put on ice, it likely means that no such restriction will be put on the committee. They will consider strength of schedule, of course, but it appears that no independent SOS measure will compel them to do anything. Thus, the Pac-12 bailed.
Here's your press release from both conferences. Each cites the Pac-12's nine-game schedule as the main issue.

ND is the really hot girl that you flirted with for years and when you finally hit it, dead fish. So there you are, feeling stupid after having wasted all that time and it was about as good as rubbing one out in the shower before bed. And no matter what, no one feels great about rubbing one out.
Nebraska on the other hand, is the girl next door that you’ve always liked but never really considered. You’ve always respected her, and kept up with what she’s doing, but it never really dawned on you she was a girl. Then one day things just happened to click… Now you’re laying there with a cigarette hanging out your mouth thinking. Whoa… I’m going to have to work out just to keep up.

This comes from Adam Rittenberg's interview with Jim Delany earlier today. This quote concerns me in that it could be indicative of a national trend in perception of the conference.

The [Big Ten] also announced today that its football divisions, starting with the 2011 season, will be "Legends" and "Leaders." A breakdown of the divisions is listed below:
LEGENDS: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern
LEADERS: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin
