K-State Baseball Home Opener

So since my junior year is my first year at K-State let's just say I've been waiting for this year for far too long and so I've been going to everything possible(barely any volleyball too bad considering my mom's a v-ball coach and Women's Basketball I can't go to-gotta keep up appearances with the cool crowd ya know who doesn't go) but forget the pointless drivel I went to the home opener against Kent State along with the other maybe 50-60 people might have been more but that was my rough estimate and I was like the 4th person because I didn't know about the rain delay.

Anyway I gotta say compared to when I saw him quite a few years back aganist Texas Tech(it may have been Brad Hill's first year)when they got destroyed and actually I don't think they even won a series that year, I'm thoroughly impressed. I mean I went to the 20 inning game vs Texas and was impressed considering how bad we usually were. We were just playing Kent State today and our pitching was a little shaky but it looked like we can hit the shit out of the ball. My mom remembers when they were every bit as bad as the football team was at that point. Call me crazy but Brad Hill might be the best coach at this school(Does Bill Snyder really count he's more of an Icon, you can't really come close to him) and thats counting ol' Frank the Tank. Even Frank has had more to work with then what Hill started with.

I'm probably pretty late on this one considering it's old news that they made their first NCAA regional appearance but I ain't sober and I'm way too excited about the Bat Cats reward program, want those box seats and free food son.

Peace

Who is K-State's greatest Trillionaire?

We know live in a world where stats, sometimes completely useless, can be found in anything. After reading a Black Heart Gold Pants article about a new stat - "The Trillion." (Don't worry Cat fans, Devan Bawinkel Is The World's Greatest Trillionaire.)

To give you a little background on the Trillion, I'll explain how it is calculated (or not calculated...). We might as well call the stat Mr. Irrelevant, but that name is already taken by the NFL draft. In order to achieve this stat, a player must finish the game (having at least played of course) and do absolutely nothing. Well, nothing that would show up in the box score. This includes, 0 points, 0 shots taken, 0 free throws taken, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 turnovers, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 0 fouls, and of course 0 points.

Now this isn't that rare of an occurance. It's not that hard to not pick up any stats in 30 seconds of scrub time. That's what makes Devan Bawinkel's 12 Trillion night even more "special."

So how does our Cat's stack up to the trillion? Pretty good I suppose. In all of our games as a team, the Wildcats have accounted for 24 Trillion. That's pretty good I guess - though I have no other stats to go off of. 5 total Cats have had a trillion game, but one players stands out above the rest.

Here's a look at the members of the K-State Trillion Club:

Chris Merriewether: 1 Trillion (Came against KU last night)

Rodney McGruder: 2 Trillion (@OU)

Nick Russell: 4 Trillion (IUPUI, UNLV, KU)

Jordan Henriquez Roberts: 4 Trillion (had 2 trillion twice against KU...)

And our biggest non-contributor:

Victor Ojeleye: 13 TRILLION! He achieved this in games against Ole Miss, Dayton, Xavier, Alabama, Cleveland State, @ Mizzou, and @ Tech. His "worst" game all season came against Tech where he recorded (or didn't record) 5 trillion!

Arthur Brown is ours now

I'm sure some people are thinking so what, he didn't do anything at Miami blah blah blah. But anytime you infuse raw talent with Snyder magic you get results and that's something we need at this moment. I know the focus is on our Sunflower Showdown right now and I hope with everything in my body we kill KU on their ode to Collins night, but this can just be a little added fuel to the burning Kansas State fire!

Hammer and Rails is trying to sort out the #1 seeds

Link to their post here.

They didn't consider Kansas State, but I can't really argue with the 7 teams they did pick. (They may also have completely blanked on K-State's existence since they also left us off Kansas' win list.) Just for my own amusement I put together KSU's profile in the same style for comparison and it seems to fall towards the bottom of the pile, but doesn't really look out of place. (My RPI numbers are 3 days newer than theirs so there will be some discrepancies.)

Kansas State (21-4, 9-3) RPI: 6 SOS: 6

Top 25 RPI wins: #13 Texas A&M, at #15 Baylor, #19 Xavier, #25 Texas

Top 50 RPI wins: #37 Dayton (neutral court), at #43 UNLV

Losses: #1 Kansas, #29 Oklahoma State, at #39 Missouri, #60 Mississippi (neutral court)

Positives: 6-1 in true road games (5-1 in conference, 2-0 vs top 50 RPI), loss to Mississippi was early in the season, remaining schedule is solid, but except for Kansas should be wins, #6 in SOS, in #1 RPI conference, could really impress people with a win at Kansas

Negatives: loss to Mississippi and home loss to Oklahoma State hurt a bit, 2nd place in conference with little chance to get to first, 4 losses already and Kansas will probably provide a 5th

Remaining Schedule: at #46 Texas Tech, #39 Missouri, at #1 Kansas, #120 Iowa State

Verdict: ?
I figure I'll leave that for everybody else to discuss. It seems like the real wild card is, "Can they win the rematch with Kansas, and if not, how much of a handicap do they get for playing 2 games against the #1 team?"

KSU Nebraska Game tonight

As you watch the ksu nebraska watch for jacob pullen and dennis clemente to lead the way for the wildcats. Nebraska will hang around for the first few minutes of the game but the athletic ability and the inside men in jamar samuels, wally judge, curtis kelly and rodney mcgruder is just too strong for nebraska to contend with. The wildcats have lost three games in the big 12 all they should have won. the one against oklahoma state was the most dissapointing one to watch them lose but they didnt get to the foul line a lot and the defense didn't play that well. The KU game what should i say the ref clearly missed a foul on chris merrieweather in the final seconds on sheron collins and for the missouri loss KSU wasnt used to the full court press but they are now and there lookin like one of the best teams in k-state history and well be dancing well into march and possibly april. My prediction 27-4 (16-3)

headin into the NCAA championship tournament. BRING ON THE CATS!!

Good TV news for everyone about Saturday's game

While I'm sad the Cats didn't win, I am delighted the game got so much national attention. I can't believe a game between two schools the coasts couldn't find on a map generated so much national interest. Sure, a 2.2 isn't all the impressive compared to CSI or the Super Bowl, but it is a helluva rating for a regular season bball game.

A little football love

A few things that have happened over the past couple days in the realm of BSFS that I noticed didn't get much love...

Joshua Moore has decided to forgo his senior season and head to the NFL. (From all sorts of sources but let's give the ol' Collegian the love: http://www.kstatecollegian.com/sports/cb-moore-declares-for-nfl-draft-1.2139805)

College football signing day tomorrow with Wichita Northwest RB Demarcus Robinson expectedly headed our way

Miami LB and Rivals #1 recruit Arthur Brown has left the team and returned home to KS. Not too much info besides that...but the dream is still alive!!

(Both from Kansascity.com:http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/1724375.html)

This has the great impressions by the guys of him too. I was at Gameday, but the speakers in front of me were killed to avoid feedback, so I couldn't hear what was said. I love Youtube. I like how they also addressed about his car being 'towed' and how he couldn't get his calamari. I think this is a great interview.

Oct. 30 Oklahoma State

Nov. 6 Texas

Nov. 13 @ Mizzou

Nov. 20 @ Colorado

Nov. 27 @ North Texas

This looks like a pretty interesting schedule to me. Only one FCS team this year! A few notes:

- Hopefully we can avenge the UCLA game this time. Win this one and it's likely that we can sweep the nonconference schedule.

- Well we got the Thursday night game on ESPN with Nebraska.....

- Not a fan of closing the schedule with three away games. Not too terribly tough, but that is definitely not the way we want to end the season.

- Finally a Thanksgiving weekend game! I know I'll be there in Denton. I'm really surprised Bill didn't try and buy his way out of that one...

Recovery

Crap, that game on Saturday just about killed me. I had given up hope with 2 minutes left until our guys decided it would be nice to come back and act like they were gonna pull it off, just to make it feel a little worse. So, basically all of Saturday night and Sunday I was trying to find ways to pull myself out of that funk. I started with the, "Thank God there's no possible way Pullen will ever shoot that bad again," and then I remembered how much of a momma's boy little twirp Travis Ford is and praised the EMAW Gods that we have Frank instead, discussed with my dad about when we were good back in the day and had a loss (specifically the one to KU in the '88 regional final) he would be depressed for a couple days. But here is where I arrived: I would rather have our players and suck, then have to root for the morons KU puts on the floor.

Really, how cool are these guys...

Tunnel Dance

A quote from Curtis Kelly, "It kinda hurts," Kelly said. "I don’t think the fans deserve it. I don’t think the students deserve it. I just hope they forgive us." Try and tell me that guy hasn't bought in yet.

So fellow K-State fans, we're good and its gonna hurt when we lose, but they're so lovable I'll forgive em. And I'll even forget if they come out and get the win on Gameday.

The sticking point in the Frank Martin contract extension negotiations

I want to thank Jeffrey Martin for his inside information on the negotiations over Frank Martin's potential contract extension. This information gave rise to a firestorm of complaints and condemnations from Wildcat fans. But I want to point out that we don't really know what is going in the negotiations. I have no doubt that Jeffrey Martin is connected, but he's not in the negotiations. He's receiving his information second or third-hand. I'm sure both sides have exchanged numbers (dollar figures and years, perhaps more than that), perhaps several times. While it is easy to say, "just give Martin a nice raise" or "give the man the money he deserves" it isn't that easy.

For instance, let's say that John Currie and KSU are willing to give Martin a multi-year deal worth $1.5M per year. Most Wildcat fans would say that is both fair and appropriate. But that can't be their first offer. If Currie faxed a 4-year/$6M offer to Martin's agent, do you think they'd just accept? Of course not. They are going to counter with a higher number, undoubtedly something like 4/$8M. My point is that whatever K-State offers instantly becomes the contract floor and that what is eventually agreed to will be higher than that. This does not mean that K-State should necessarily start with a ridiculous, insulting lowball offer. That might have been what they did. Maybe. We don't know for sure. But contract negotiations are about meeting in the middle. Neither side gets everything they want.

But I don't think this is just about money. It seemed like the prevailing tone in the comments on Jeffrey Martin's post was that K-State is being cheap and if they'd just offer a nice raise, Martin would sign and stay at K-State for many years. There are several assumptions and leaps of faith there which might not be warranted. The sticking point in the negotiation might not be salary or years. Certainly they are at issue, but I'm sure K-State wants a contract that actually keeps Martin in Manhattan. Let's take a ride in the Wayback Machine to 1990. Lon Kruger had just led the Wildcats to their fourth NCAA torney appearance in his four years as head coach (including an Elite Eight appearance). Kruger then thanked the University for their money and the fans for their support by leaving for the University of Florida. Does Martin want to stay at K-State? I'm sure many fans would say, "As long as he gets the right money and respect from the University and support from the fans, I'm sure he would." First, that's just a guess (or wishcasting). Second, even if K-State gives Martin a big raise, he can still get more money and more prestige from a school with a bigger name and deeper pockets.

What I'm suggesting is that one of the big sticking points in the negotiation might be some sort of penalty or buyout that Martin would have to pay if he leaves before the contract is up. If Martin has his sights set on using K-State as a resume-builder so that he can move onward and upward when he gets a good offer elsewhere, then he's going to want little or no such penalty/buyout. K-State, on the other hand, would want it to be significant.

I don't think this contract negotiation is a simple good guy (Martin) vs. bad guy (Currie) situation. Martin may well be looking for the contract which is easiest to get out of, regardless of the salary involved.

A Wal Mart Story

Ok, so this is completely random but it made me laugh so hard I just can't resist. The fiancee, Kelsey, and I were walking around the grocery section of walmart here in Manhattan today and Jacob Pullen walked by on his cell phone. I whispered to Kelsey that it was Pullen and, as expected, she turned beat red and got completely nervous but wanted to follow. (This is mostly because she has a ridiculous crush on Denis and thought he would be there too) Sooo, I let her be creepy for a bit, then we saw Curtis Kelly as well. I got her calmed down to focus on finishing our shopping and we were heading toward a corner to the registers. I noticed Pullen and Kelly coming around our way again over the top of some clothes racks, along with Kelsey getting red and nervous again. So we kept walking and when we go to turn the corner I was looking right into the eyes of Jamar Samuels, looking UP at me from a motorized shopping cart for handicapped people. And then, there is Jordan Henriquez Roberts right behind him with his legs sticking straight out because the dude is so massive.

I always thought if I saw these guys on campus I would feel so small, but instead, the way Jamar was looking at me, I thought I should help him find his mother.

Open letter to 610 Sports Radio: we have to break up

I'm sorry, 610 Sports, but we have to break up. Our relationship was good while it lasted, and I've had some fun, but it's over. I've removed you from my stored session list.

It's not you; it's me. You see, I'm a Kansas State fan. I understand that I don't represent a large part of your demographic. I can't have you all to myself. I don't even expect an equal share of your attention. Just a little here and there, when my team does earn a share of the spotlight.

So, when I turned to you today, I expected a brief discussion involving the game last night against Texas. On my drive to work this morning, the discussion centered on the students' "Overrated" chant. On the way home, you focused on Frank Martin's sideline demeanor. This simply isn't fulfilling my needs.

It's not that I'm expecting only empty fawning on your part. After the game, my wife and I discussed the puzzling substitution patterns Martin employed. Why didn't Martin put Samuels on the floor to start the second half? McGruder was effective; why has it taken so long for him to get playing time? Clemente was erratic and ineffective last night; at what point will that limit this team?

These are legitimate questions, as far as I am concerned. I crave discussion on these and other basketball-related issues with the team.

My mother was in attendance last night. I'm sure if I asked her, she would comment on the intense defense employed by Kansas State. She would bemoan the atrocious performance at the line. She might even go so far as to point out that she could defeat any of the players in a free throw competition. Big talk, but she could back it up.

My grandfather coached high school basketball. He has passed, but my grandmother shares his passion and knowledge of the game. She follows Wichita State and Kansas closely, and will not hesitate to share her opinion on the offensive schemes employed by each. I have discussed the sport at length with her before, and learned a good deal from it.

So, in short, I think I can expect better. There's plenty of other venues which do provide the in-depth analysis I desire.

Please don't go away mad. I think we can still be friends. I'm sure that at some point we'll change uniforms. I know you'll have intriguing insight on that subject. Or maybe the court design will change. You'll be the first I'll turn to for an opinion. But for now, if I want to talk basketball, I'll call my grandmother.

Just thought we should have a forum to post all the places K-State is getting mentioned today. Besides the constant highlights from Sportscenter, Around The Horn just opened the show discussing not only K-State's win over Texas, but also the "classy" fans who where smart enough to not rush the court showing we expect to beat good teams as well as Frank Martin and his great coaching. One of the guys also mentioned that he feels Curtis Kelly should be a POY candidate.
I Have to Admit...

I'm impressed by you folks to the west. Kansas State looks like a damn good team and it's exciting to see them approaching a top 10 ranking as we get closer to conference play. I'll probably get blasted by my own for admitting as much but right now Kansas State has some serious experience and things seem to be coming together in all the right places.

Pullen and Clemente are a damn formidable pair of guards. Clemente obviously showed a lot last year but Pullen seems to be thriving in his third season. He's shooting much more efficiently and seems confident as an upperclassman.

The inside trio of Curtis Kelly, Jamar Samuels and Dominique Sutton has also put it together. I'm impressed with Kelly's transition as often times transfers can stumble. With Samuels and Sutton it isn't a huge uptick in production but having both entering their third season with the Wildcats I would have to believe it's starting to click better for them and the roles are becoming more comfortable.

Throw in a fairly deep and reasonably productive bench and Frank Martin seems to have put together a very solid unit. Saturday should be fun as I do think MU is a better team then their early season struggles, but regardless this Kansas State team looks the part and I'd have to say is probably a more well rounded group and possibly a better team in the long run than the Beasley/Walker year.

I guess we'll see you in a few weeks. Manhattan is going to be a tough place to come away with a win this year for anybody. Feel free to start by beating Texas, that way if we stumble...it doesn't sting as much. Of course at that point, I suppose you guys would be front runners for the Big 12 then wouldn't you?
