#17 Landon Root |
Position: Quarterback Previous College: Northern Illinois Projection: Scout Team Status: Preferred Walk-On |
Landon Scott Root (b. Feb. 27, 1996) is a quarterback who signed with Northern Illinois out of high school in 2014 and redshirted during the 2014 season for the MAC Champion Huskies before deciding to transfer closer to home.
Root prepped at Collegiate High School in Wichita under head coach Mike Gehrer and was rated the eighth-best prospect in the state by Rivals.com in the class of 2014. He completed 264 of 429 passes for 3,416 yards and 37 touchdowns during his final two seasons, while he also rushed for 937 yards and scored 17 scores.
A 2013 first-team all-state honoree by The Wichita Eagle and an honorable-mention pick by The Topeka Capital-Journal, Root also was named an honorable-mention pick by The Wichita Eagle as a junior.
Root, who earned first-team all-conference honors as a junior and senior, was a teammate of current Wildcats Mitch and Myles Copeland. Given the stacked quarterback race, I suspect he is destined to end up as a safety.
He also lettered two years each in baseball, earning all-state honors, and basketball, earning all-league accolades.
