Open Game Thread: K-State vs. Texas

Kansas St. Wildcats at Texas Longhorns, Feb 11, 2012 1:00 PM CST

Who: K-State vs. Texas

When: February 11, 2012 | 1:00 p.m.

Where: Austin, Texas | Frank Erwin Center (16,734)

Media: ESPN | 1350 KMAN

We play Texas today, which means there's no way we lose, right? Maybe, but I'm less confident about this one than any in the last few years. A win and we feel pretty confident about making the NCAA Tournament. A loss puts us at .500 with KU and road trips to Baylor and Missouri looming. Yeah, it's kind of a big deal.

Go Cats!

Today or Monday? I'd rather see them shoot the lights out against KU myself.

It really aggravates me that our game overlaps with Missouri/Baylor.

I want to watch the game in Columbia, too.

DVR is your friend.

Ima watch that later.

The really annoying thing is how both the afternoon games are on Big 12 Network, and we get stuck with OSU getting killed in Lawrence rather than aTm at Iowa State. Eff that.

Our new conference mates just got tied up after leading the entire second half.

Haven’t hit more than a couple of field goals in 10 minutes. Sound familiar?

C’mon, Huggs, pull this one out. You’re making the conference look bad.

So, Pan, since you're here...

I think that says a lot about the type of journalist he is.

Had to turn it off.

This season has become all about growth moving forward. The future is bright.

Jamar, as much as I appreciate his enthusiasm, is really not a big loss. Same goes for Vic.

We have some very good young talent. But enough of this crap about Rod and Will being the leaders of this team. If this season has proven one thing, it’s that neither guy is capable of being a good leader. Jake Pullen doesn’t allow five losses when leading by 9 or more in the second half. This team could easily be 22-2. But instead it will be 17-7 because it didn’t have what it takes to close a team out.

Next year, this is Angel Rodriguez’s team. And I think we’ll see a lot of success with him running it.

Do the refs keep our 7-FUCKING-foot tall players from being able to finish within 5-feet with open lanes? Do they keep Jamar Samuels from looking lost? Do they keep us from throwing bad passes or keeping Martavious on the bench the majority of the game or making the free throws we DO get a chance to shoot? No.

we had practice at least once a week.

It was pretty serious stuff.

I lettered all four years. I was good, but probably not the best weapon we had on the team. Everyone kind of had their specialty. I was pretty good all-around, and not afraid to answer. I had a tendency to KNOW the answer, but after I buzzed in I would second guess myself and say dumb shit. For instance, there was a question about who designed the Statue of Liberty. I KNEW it was Bartholdi, and that is why I buzzed in, but when I answered I said Eiffel (because he designed the actual frame).

But we were all pretty well-rounded.

However, since we didn’t really have true specialists like most team did, there would always be a few sections (math, science, art, really dependent on the round) where we would just get killed by the other team’s specialist.

We also had a player that tended to buzz in half-way through a question, accidentally, and consequently cost us points.

Although one time he did that, with only two words out of the moderator’s mouth, and guessed photosynthesis.

Dude, I think you're taking it a little too personally.

If you think that the officials may have had something to do with losing, but can also admit that we didn’t play well in the second half and that’s becoming a pattern when we have the lead, then you and I are basically on the same page.

My comments are directed towards those who think that the refs screwed us out of a win and the only reason we lost was officiating. I don’t think that’s you.

I’m not trying to attack you personally. I let CBE handle those kinds of exchanges… I mean, he’s tried to get me to screw myself a couple times already today ;-)

I know you aren't attacking me personally.

But I think it is perfectly legitimate to make the claim that officiating cost us this game.

Yes, we did things that we could have done better, but I think the evidence shows that the largest contributing factor to our loss today was the horrendous officiating.

But the lead doesn’t evaporate that quickly just cuz the officials are making bad calls. That double digit lead was gone in the snap of a finger…

by Kohawk84 on Feb 11, 2012 3:49 PM CST up reply actions

You're right ...

If our guys could have outplayed Texas by 25 points, we would have won. If our guys made every shot they took, there was no way Texas could have won. If we had 0 team turnovers, we probably could have won. If we outrebounded Texas by 30, we probably could have won.

You said there can be more than one reason we lost the game, and officiating can be one. Hence, you admitted that our team did things INTRINSICALLY that caused us to lose the game. Extraneous to officiating.

Which is what I said at the very beginning.

And for the record you and I usually agree in our thinking, from what I have gathered. I just can’t continue to watch our team blow second half leads and believe that it’s not the norm.

I’m not saying that we didn’t play poorly at times. I’m saying that our level of poor play was not enough, on it’s own, to blow that large of a lead, in this game. The one-sided officiating, however, put it WAY over the top.

I am contending that if the game had been called consistently throughout the entire 40 minutes

the outcome could have certainly been different. It may not have appeared as if we played so bad in the second half. No, the officials are NOT the reason we made bad passes or took a bad 3 point shot with 30 seconds left on the shot clock,

But a FT disparity of 20-0 on attempts is a direct effect of how the game is being officiated.

Get to some post season tournament, get the practice time, and then come back next year to erase this stink.

do you ever do drills with your teams that are the equivalent of the fumble drills in football?

by yeahboozin on Feb 11, 2012 3:26 PM CST reply actions

We did weight work with our fingers.

Grabbing a 45lb plate in each hand with our fingers, walking the length of the floor.

We also did combo drills with two players – one guy trying to get to the ball, the other guy trying to keep them from it. Doubled as a hustle/loose ball drill as well as a rebounding drill. 10 seconds long. Loser had to run line drills. One of the most violent and physical drills I’ve been a part of.

It’s weird. Our guys can’t grab a ball, but they have no problem diving on the floor after a loose ball. Very odd.

I'll make one final comment about officiating:

The officiating was terrible. How do I know that?

Because we’re talking about it.

NO ONE was talking about the officiating in the first half. I made a joke about it, and that was the only comment whatsoever. That’s why I came back immediately and said that no, it was actually pretty good. Missed calls here and there, but by and large, good.

Officiating, if done properly, should be transparent.

The officiating of that second half was anything but transparent. It was clear that UT was being rewarded for being aggressive, and K-State was being penalized. When you get penalized for being aggressive, you stop being aggressive, or you foul out. We did both, interestingly enough.

I have never been a part of a basketball game – player, coach, ref or observer (yes, I’ve done all) – where there is such a disparity between two teams. The only possible exception is if a team is fouling a lot at the end of the game. We did this, but not enough to drive the disparity that far apart.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

I think piss poor officiating definitely played a role

the disparity of the free throw attempts is more than enough evidence of that. But with a 14 point lead just after halftime pissed away the way it was it has to be on the team/coaching as well. We match the intensity of the 1st half, we win this game. Probly by double digits…

UT drives the hoop and creates fouls. We settle for jumpers and can’t hit shots. Driving and attacking the hoop creates favorable situations and we just don’t have guys who can do that effectively and under control.

by ksu&warpaint on Feb 11, 2012 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

We WERE driving to the hoop

and were getting hacked like crazy and not getting fouls called to send us to the free throw line. Which essentially is the exact same thing as a turnover.

So then we stop doing that and going for jumpers because at least we get a decent look at the basket. And they don’t fall for us.

THIS is how one sided officiating can change the dynamic of the game.

This is SO true.

We were playing out in Waxahachie a week ago, and were in complete control for almost the entire first quarter. Then the officials starting calling foul after foul after foul on us every time we’d breathe on someone who was penetrating. And my 6-5 PG got mugged at least three times on drives, and—shock!—no call. It broke our rhythm, got my best three defenders on the bench with 3 fouls each, and turned a 6 point lead into a 10 point deficit at half. We never let them get completely away, but the game turned in that 10 minute stretch before half. I could see it in my guys’ body language, and called all of my timeouts for the first time all season. I nearly got my first tech in 10 years. Nothing worked, though, and we ended up losing by 12. It was as frustrating a game as I’ve ever coached, and was heavily influenced by officiating, and even THAT wasn’t as bad as this game.

Yeah, not so much.

He just happened to be my best player, and one of my two best ball handlers, so that’s how I used him. Got the idea from Chris Mack, actually, when I heard him talk at the Nike Clinic in Myrtle Beach last year. I just had to find a way to get the ball in his hands more often, so that’s what we did. My actual front line went only 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0.

by Collin's Bloody Elbow on Feb 11, 2012 6:57 PM CST up reply actions

That's how my rec teams go.

I’m 6-6, and arguably the second best ball handler on the team, so I spend a lot of time playing a shooting guard type, and take a lot of PG responsibilities when our PG needs to sit. That’s OK for me, though, b/c I haven’t honestly played paint on offense with regularity since I was a freshman in HS.

The team I’m on right now goes 6-0, 6-4, 6-4, 6-5, 6-6, and has three more guys on the bench at 6-4 or taller. We’re pretty tall for a rec team.

Two days later #2 KU came to town and the Cats spanked KU, starting a 6 game wining streak that ended with yet another loss to a 2-player Colorado team in the conference tournament, and then a disappointing loss to a bunch of gingers in the NCAAs when only Jake and Curtis left the damned hotel.

I know this season isn’t over.

I don't think I'm bringing anything necessary to the table here, but re: officials.

They were god awful.

Second half stat says it all – UT with 26 FT attempts. Cats with 0. Zero! That is absolutely absurd.

Now I absolutely believe the team should have overcome it. You have a 13 point lead at half. You protect that if you’re a good team. We didn’t do so. And we haven’t done so five times now. So I’m not prepared to blame the refs given that pattern and my sad belief this is part of the DNA of this year’s squad.

That being said, to not credit the officiating with some of the blame is crazy. To credit it fully, however, is also crazy.

The positives to take from today are Angel and Diaz. The future is very very bright. Now Gip needs to learn to play much better defense and stay on the court. But man, really really like this class.

I wonder if his injury is worse than they’re letting on.

Either that or he’s taken a big step back from being the guy, which he seemed on the cusp of becoming after the first UT game.

The sauce sweeps behind asian girl white guy.

by yeahboozin on Feb 11, 2012 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

True enough.

The five minute stretch I talked about – 18:00 to 13:00 – UT did everything right (one 3PFG, two dunks, 4-5 FTs, 4-6 FG, 1 TO, 3 fouls) and we did nothing right, save keeping the ball in our hands (0-6 FG, 0-0 FT, 6 fouls, 1 TO). That’s where the lead evaporated.

The problem is that the refs had already established in the half that they were going to make calls for UT in the paint, but not for us. I think people on this thread are severely underestimating the psychological effect on a team that is on the wrong side of the officiating slant. I’ve yet to see a team truly be able to overcome 8 people – which is what we had to do in that second half.

I don’t think Rod will ever be that guy. He doesn’t have a “fuck you, I’m scoring the ball” or “You will not score on me” mentality. He has a solid “I’m going to go play hard” mentality, but there’s a big difference between “I’m going to try hard” and “I’m going to get ’er done.”

We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well in the second half, and a big part of it was during that five minute stretch.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

I knew we were in trouble with the refs early.

They called two fouls against us on missed dunks/layups by UT that were late calls only because UT didn’t score on them.

Then Shane flushes on Chapman who gets a ton of arm and no call.

The sauce sweeps behind asian girl white guy.

by yeahboozin on Feb 11, 2012 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

I argued earlier that the Shane play should have been treated the same, and I'm OK with that.

No call if it goes, foul if it doesn’t.

The problem with the refs reared its head in the second half early when they started calling everything in the paint on the UT end, but nothing in the paint on our end. That sort of thing completely removes any likelihood for aggressiveness, and completely slants the game in the favor of the receiving team.

This.

Everyone needs to keep a healthy dose of reality next to them when watching games. We were picked 6th in the Big XII preseason for a reason. 6th means you’re NIT material. 6th means you’re going to lose ballgames, regardless in what fashion.

I’ve said it off-and-on all year – the season our football team had this year, 8th in Big XII to 8th in country – is storybook material. That doesn’t happen every year. Hell, that NEVER happens. And for every bit our football team overachieved – and you won’t convince me that we didn’t massively overachieve – our basketball team is falling on the opposite side of the coin flip.

But, night in and night out, the boys lace ‘em up and go out there and play. From a 30,000 foot view, our team is right where it should be. We don’t have any elite talent. We have decent players, and all combined, we have the ability to win a few games. We’re 17-7. We could completely shit the bed the rest of the season, and still end up with a winning record. We aren’t that far removed from a period where a winning record wasn’t necessarily guaranteed.

we are very close to being a top ten team. Just look at the facts. We could easily be 22-2 if we held onto big second half leads. Now that’s not who this team is and to say it is is not smart. I know that.

But next year we are going to be very very good. Frank has built a great foundation. Even in years like this where the team isn’t quite there, we’re at worst a high seed in the NIT and with a lot of talent returning the following season.

If you can’t get excited by Angel, Gip, and Diaz, well I’m not sure what you’re watching.

And as hard as I’ve been on Will, he’s going to score 12+ a game next season. With Angel more comfortable running the point Will is not going to have to do so much. He’ll be able to be more of a shooter and is going to be very good.

This season is just gravy right now.

Football was no different.

People can talk how they want about the football team, but we were a possession a game away from a very pedestrian regular season. It’s just the basketball team is on the wrong side of those possessions.

I think thins is a fair assessment

I was on the phone with my parents after the game, and had the KU game on in the background.

I saw an exchange that furthered my officiating rage.

Possession #1: T-Rob has the bal, driving toward the basket, spins, drops shoulder, bowls over the set defender. Blocking foul is called.

Possession #2 (maybe 3 possessions later): T-Rob has the ball, not in control really, OSU player places both hands on T-Rob’s back (no shoving or anything, just places them there like every defender does) and gets called for pushing.

Reverse those players (or in the KSU/UT game) and they would have resulted in a charge and a no-call.

I think that is garbage.

that’s not the purpose of officials, to arbitrarily decide who DESERVES to be called for fouls based on athletic ability. If he bowls over someone and it is a charge, it is a charge, period. I guess I don't quite understand the opinion

that you have be an alumnus of said school to be a fan of said school…a lot of teams wouldn’t have near the fan base if that was the case. Including KSU.

I didn’t go to K-State (Alumnus of Coe College) but I spent most of my life in Manhattan and grew up supporting the Cats…dont understand why that would make me unworthy to wear K-State purple…but I guess if thats what you think you’re entitled to your opinion. Just my two cents…

and I’m sure you are every bit the KSU fan I am, if not more devoted. However, I can’t stand the fans like I mentioned above. Look at Notre Dame for example. by MeatGeek on Feb 11, 2012 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

That is a bit different.

SMU, despite having Methodist in it’s name, does not have the same connection to Methodism that Notre Dame has to Catholicism.

You have to remember, back during Notre Dame’s heyday, Catholics were still treated like second-class citizens. The fact that they had a football team they could call their own that was also one of the best in the country was sort of a rallying point.

So, I certainly give a pass to Catholics who root for Notre Dame. Even though there isn’t the same oppression of Catholics that there used to be, at this point it is just as much about family tradition.

And, going to a Methodist church for a while is different from actually being born and raised a Methodist/Catholic. Less connection. I am uniquely situated to comment on both, since I was born and raised a Methodist (both my father and grandfather were preachers, and my grandfather was a bishop), and I converted to Catholicism while in college.

My father-in-law, a die-hard KSU fan, is also a Notre Dame fan, precisely because if you were Catholic, you rooted for Notre Dame. That was your school.

My sig needs updated.

I don't necessarily disagree. I have lots of family that are K-State fans that don't have degrees from K-State.

But they have something in common. The live in or immediately around Manhattan. They did something related to the university. There’s some connection, somewhere.

But I have a relative that loves UNC. Don’t get it. Has no relation to the university. Never even been to the state of North Carolina.

I personally don’t really care if people like teams they don’t have any connection to. That’s up to them. Frankly, its why I don’t really cheer for any professional sports teams – I don’t have any connection to them. But I won’t tolerate someone who is a fan of a particular school because its easy to root for a team that always wins, then turns around and tries to shove it down my throat. THAT’S the bulk of the KU fans I know.

Frack Man U fans, seriously.

Their the worst about claiming how much they know about soccer, without actually knowing much about soccer.

but your point remains. Finishing 5th is still not really setting things up for a run to the championship game.

Only 8 plays 9 and 7 plays 10 on day 1

winner gets the 1 and 2 seed respectively. 4 plays 5 and 3 plays 6 on day 2

by Kohawk84 on Feb 11, 2012 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

You're playing 4th.

7 plays 10, 8 plays 9.

Winner of 7-10 plays 2. Winner of 8-9 plays 1.

5th knows they’re playing 4. So, assuming we do finish 5th, we know we’re playing ISU in that case. If we make it all the way back to 4, we’ll play ISU or UT.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

My gut feel is that Big XII only gets 5 if:

- We win some of our remaining games to finish 4th or 5th

or

- Someone wins Big XII Tourney outside of KU/MU/BU/ISU

If someone outside of the top 4 wins the tourney, it might be enough to push ISU out.

Dare I say it, if we make it to 5th, and net at least one win over our next three, it may be a season like our last NIT appearance, where we finished 4th and were skipped over, for ISU. I think ISU needs to finish well to be in – I’m not buying that they’re necessarily a lock at 4th in the league.

IMO all we need to do is win 4 more games.

If we go 3-3 rest of way then win one Big 12 tourney game to finish 21-11 I think we’re in.

The bubble is VERY soft this year.

Plus while we don’t have a great resume, we do have wins over Mizzou and Long Beach that are pretty good wins right now.

Couldn't agree more.

I watch a ton of basketball, just to get a good idea of the landscape as a whole. Probably more than the selection committee. I should be on the selection committee.

Every league, minus the Pac 12, has two legit ballclubs, and a third pretender. The entire landscape is very flat, very meh. You’re going to have about 50 teams with extremely similar resumes. If we can pick up at least one more great win in conference (KU or @ MU would be stellar), and win winnable games the rest of the year, we should be OK. That being said, Bama has become a dumpster fire, so one of our good wins will probably go away by the end of the year.

It's actually got some weight, because it's on the road.

Sure, our SOS doesn’t look fantastic, but we beat Bama on a neutral court, we won @VPI, and we won 3 games, including UTEP and LBSU on neutral court in Hawai’i.

The only black eye we have on our resume right now is the OU home loss. If we can pull something together that resembles a basketball team for the remaining games, and we don’t make the tourney, we can honestly point at the OU home loss, and the missed opportunity against WVU in Wichita.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

They shit the bed against a mediocre Alabama team early in the season. The same Bama team they beat in the NIT last year.

Frank's comments tonight lead me to believe he knows this team isn't going to do much this year.

Heaping praise upon UT. Saying his players come out hard every day. Seemingly content with where the team is right now.

I think he knows this team doesn’t have what it takes. I hope he’s looking towards the future and is going to give Diaz as many minutes as possible.

There’s still hope this season, but not for any real run. Let’s build towards a VERY bright future.

Well, what else can he do.

he sounds dejected an awful lot after most of our losses. And he can’t really complain about the horrible officiating (and as has been mentioned plenty, that still doesn’t explain our poor passing, lack of going strong to the rim, etc).

He always talks about immaturity, and the guys will do what the coaches “allow” them to do, so they need to do a better job about that. I wonder if he is really changing anything in practices, or just getting angry and the guys are flaming out?

I don't doubt that Frank is going to coach the hell out of this team the rest of the way.

But we only have six games left in the conference season and it is too late to say this team is still building.

And I think Frank knows this is who this team is. He doesn’t have a guy who is going to take over this year. But next year I think that will be Angel.

Texas fan here.

This was a big game for both teams. From a Texas fans perspective, the officiating was great, but there were even multiple times when I questioned the fouls that were called on you guys. I really in general just hated the way the called the game. But I think KSU did get the short end of the stick especially in the second half in which KSU. Texas preformed very well in the second half IMO, and KSU went cold. Normally after every conference game I read some of the threads of other teams fans, and by far this is one of the most well informed, highly hilarious, and well educated, live game threads I have ever seen, especially since you guys were being hosed by officials.

Thanks.

To say we got hosed is an understatement from our point of view – obviously – but you’re right. We didn’t shoot the ball as well in the second half.

And I’ll speak for everyone when I say we like to keep a high level of acumen around these parts.

yeah The game in Manhatten was ruff for UT fans

because like this game there was a large difference between the fouls for each team, obviously not on the level today by no means, and yes J’covan has been cold in conference play for the most part. In non conference I remember he put up 35 on a respectable team. But today he came up huge as leader.

The game in Manhattan wasn't even in the same ZIP CODE as this game was, homer officiating-wise.

Texas was fouling to get back into it, which accounts for almost all of the 28-20 disparity in fouls.

Nope, but I do think they're possibly the "best of the rest".

I think Syracuse showed how vulnerable they are without Fab Melo, and if they play a team that has a good inside/out mix, I think they can put Fab Melo into foul trouble.

I also think Syracuse is getting a lot of good vibe because of how strong the Big East “typically” is. I’m not buying the Big East is that good this year. Certainly not as good as their recent 10-team (or whatever) NCAA entry seasons. South Florida is at 8-4 in the conference, after they went 7-6 in non-conference (15-10 overall). Do I think Syracuse is good? Sure. Are they great? Nope.
