I'm pretty stoked about how many of these guys are already on campus

Barnett, Bender, Burns, Clark, H. Davis, Gronkowski, Harvill, Hollinshed, Moore, Rooks.
Thats 10 of 25, pretty good percentage if you ask me. Look for those guys to contribute next year

OH

When I read the above post, I thought Chris meant Los Angeles, and I was really confused.

LOL

I would have typed that as L.A.

Or maybe not.

I actually like to refer to that city as Hollywood because I know it gets under their skin and I hate L.A. (being a San Diego native)

Michael Smith spent years in Louisiana during the first tenure, and now he's back again.

Apparently, this time, he’s actually getting players.

There was a page on NOLA.com that listed all of the D1 prospects in the area (there are a ton), and KSU was mentioned on a large number of those. He’s been doing work down there, heavily for the past few years, and it’s really paying off.

Thats good.

He also seems to be our lead recruiter, which I have no problem with. He doesnt seem to be looking to go anywhere else at this point of his career and is still young (for a coach) and energetic

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

Don't forget that Snyder coached at UCLA and at a Cal HS.

I know, that was a long time ago, but good relationships nourished over time have a way of helping you out when you might not expect it. I have the feeling that those old relationships have been used to get introductions to forge new relationships and when you’re willing to look at the 2’s and 3’s that other people are casting aside without a second look, then you become an asset for a coach at the HS and JUCO level.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

Anyone have any idea how good these guys are?

I know everyone is gaga over Bender, but what about the other guys?

Hard to judge. I know they are all probably 3 star guys, but that doesn’t tell me anything except they aren’t freak athletes that get recruited by power schools.

So, thoughts?

My sig needs updated.

by ChrisP Wildcat on Feb 1, 2012 10:14 AM CST reply actions

Well...

like I said above we have 10 guys already coming. Bender+3 JUCOS+6 Greyshirts. Regardless of recruiting “rankings” these guys are already in the program and are working, practicing, getting into college life. As we have seen, in college football, and especially in HCBS’s system, being able to participate in spring practice is massively important. Ty Zimmerman came out of his greyshirt year and turned into a freshman All-American.

Otherwise, it looks like a very solid class. There is nothing spectacular, by popular convention, in this class, but it looks like a bunch of kids (mostly HS and greyshirt—4yr guys) who will help build depth and provide some more competition to help our older guys get better.

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

Solid is the word I'd use to describe it.

All position groups were addressed across the board (with the exception of K/P), and we took a large number of prep players. My guess is that we’ll grayshirt a couple of the prep guys, as per usual, and we’ll end up putting about 21-22 of these guys on scholarship.

Snyder always holds 3-4 scholarships back for potential transfers and kids that may not have qualified at other schools. Also, whatever you don’t sign under the 25 man limit becomes a count back for the next year, meaning we can sign 26-29ish players in the next class, which is going to be Senior heavy. This class is not Senior heavy at all. We may lose fifteen scholarship seniors if Foketi gets that medical hardship.

From what I understand, that isn't true
whatever you don’t sign under the 25 man limit becomes a count back for the next year

You get 25 new scholarships a year, that’s it. if you have any extra you can use them for walk-ons, but you can only give out 25 a year

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

You can use them for JUCO players that sign in the month of December. They are the exception for that remainder.

From the NCAA

85 total, 25 New per year.

I would think fall Juco signers would qualify as “new” because they were not on the team for that football year

But I believe if they sign in the previous calendar year, it can still count back to the previous class.

Wallace over at GPC

was complaining on twitter yesterday about how bad this class was, saying it was the worst in several years. I know we talk about how bad he is at his job, but its one of those reasons I refuse to pay for their service. There is no reason to be so negative about a recruiting class here, given HCBS’s track record. Prince had top 40 classes his last two years, and look where that got him. So what if they ranking numbers look low? If you are running a K-State site like that, just ignore the numbers and look for that pattern of depth building and solidarity.

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

The class Wallace compared it to was the one with Freeman, Josh Moore, etc.

He said the 2006 class, with multiple NFL draftees, was the worst in years.

Obviously, he had his years mixed up, or he’s as dumb as we all thought he was.

Not saying that I agree with the class being horrible,

but I’m not sure there is a lot to get really excited about. It looks like a decent class, not too good, not too bad. What he needs to think about is that we are coming off of a 7 and 6 win season so most of the top tier talents in this class were already committed or had good ideas of where they were going. I think next year, unless we fall off the earth, we should be able to pull in a little better class…. Also about Prince’s classes, he was a horrible coach that couldn’t do much with the good players on the team. Its not a perfect system but usually the higher up you are on that list the better chance you have of being good.

by rich04 on Feb 1, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

I think it's fair to say that you recruit results the year after you do something good...

But you need to keep that momentum rolling. If we tank in the middle of the season, kids could bail.

The two commitments we already have in 2013 look great. The LB out of Conway Springs, Tanner Wood, is an athletic freak (6’5", 237, 4.7 40). Jordan Willis, DE out of Rockhurst, will most likely be ranked fairly highly in 2013 if what Jeremy Crabtree said about him is true.

And with Cantele's little brother already on

Looking at the roster, there seems to be plenty of depth for next year, so why not use those spots on other guys. Will probably need to go hard after a good punter next year thouhg…paging Sean Snyder.

Harvill was a greyshirt

I don't think Harvill originally intended to

greyshirt, but he blew out his knee during his senior year, or something like that. So, he opted to take the greyshirt year to recover and get healthy.

OK

He’s listed as a freshman on last season’s roster (I think he redshirted) and Bracket did a profile on him over the summer. So why does he show up on the list of 2012 signees?

Harvill injured his knee (or leg) pretty badly and grayshirted.

Today is the first day I heard about Burton.

And I was hoping that he was going to be a good one.

I mean, he is playing right there in Manhattan. Plenty of time and opportunity to fully scout him and make sure he is going to meet our needs.

Word around Manhattan

is that Burton is a stud. Best player on his team. I know some guys that actually watch MHS football and know football (players, coaches) and they saw he is going to be huge for us, on either O or D

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

And Burns gets first shot at tysyn's spot

IMO. Ganious will have to be pretty good to unseat him

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

is it set that he'll be on the D?

I’d prefer to have that athleticism there, given our relatively high number of receivers, but I also wouldn’t complain having a blow-by speed receiver over 6’ tall either.

by k-stater86 on Feb 1, 2012 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

From what I've heard and read

he plans to play D. with his best fit being a safety position.

And with our current crop of receivers, especially with the class coming in, I would expect him to be buried on the depth chart there. He could play/back-up immediately if he played D. And we also really need some speed over there…

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 11:34 AM CST up reply actions

I probably ought to be clear that I'm bullish on Gronkowski because of the genes

From what I read about him at kstatesports.com, and from what I know growing up in Keller,Tx, right outside of Southlake, that guy could make an impact at linebacker pretty quickly.

He looks (outside of skin tone) just like Tre Walker, and I would be more than pleased to have another kid like that roaming the defensive backfield. Put some pounds on in his first year, then let him go chase down some QB’s

You know, except for the fact that we lost and lost out on what would have been KSU’s first Cotton Bowl.

Rae Carruth, James Kidd, and Phil Savoy … they made even John Hessler look good. I think Christian Fauria was playing for them at TE, too.

Also, a kid going to JUCO who hopes to come back to town.

The Indians had three other seniors make their college choices on Wednesday, as Josh Olsen and Dakota Harwood chose Highland Community College and Jason Lierz selected Hutchinson.

Lierz served as the Indians’ center and was part of an offensive line that was almost entirely new from a season ago. Lierz said in signing with Hutchinson on Wednesday that his goal is to return home to play in front of his friends and family at K-State someday.

Pan, with your eye for QB's

who was better coming out of HS? How well do you seem them panning out in college?

by jtarkman on Feb 1, 2012 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

Bender is more polished. Sams is more dynamic.

Bender, if you work with him, is a safer bet. Sams, if you work with him, has the highest upside of any QB we’ve recruited, in Snyder’s system, outside of Bishop. Better than Beasley, Dunn, Ell, Meier, Evridge, Webb, etc. All of them.

No one touches Bishop. No one. He was the pinnacle of what we do here.

Both of them are good. I think Bender could help us develop a more balanced offense, but the running game wouldn’t be as dynamic. It would be like with Klein; we’d use him and the rest of the backs to grind it out. Sams gives us the potential to hit a home run every time he tucks and runs, or rolls out of the pocket in general. However, contain him, and we may have problems. Whereas if you contain Bender, we’d probably be okay either way.

So, maybe to summarize better, Bender gives us a chance for more balance. Sams gives us a chance for more big plays. Both are great fits for what we want to do, and we’re in very, very good hands for the next 4-5 years.

Possibly, but that's discounting good guys that are recurited specifically for those positions, and assuming K-State will have the luxury of depth at QB to facilitate that

I’d rather have both stay at QB. It is the most important position on the field, and these two sound fantastic as a pair.

In my perfect world,

Bender wins the job post-Klein, while Sams becomes a “Slash” player (WR/RB/QB/PR/KR). Sams would throw a few passes per game, have at least a few balls thrown his way, and run the ball several times as well. This, combined with (perhaps) becoming a part of the return game, would give him 12-15 touches per game, while giving us a solid true QB as well.

I can't speak for Pan's ability to estimate that, but I've always disliked crediting QBs with wins

Yeah, QB is the most important position, but it isn’t Marino’s fault his Dolphins never won a Super Bowl, or Elway never even played in a bowl game (I don’t think). It takes a team. Get Optimus Klein the 1998 or 1999 defense, and I think this team smashes OSU, and may beat OU. Give Bishop one of Prince’s “defenses” and he would have struggled to get to a bowl game too.

At any rate, Sams and Bender shouldn’t be the limiting factor in the number of wins their teams achieve. I daresay last year Coffman wasn’t the limiting factor in 2010, but Gregory and Coffman may have been the limiters in 2009.

Oh, I'd call Carson a limiter in 2010.

He didn’t have a bad year, but an adequate passer coupled with the Molasses Sweep and that team was never, ever going to win more than the seven that it did.

Klein may not have been ready yet, but I still have to think that Bill didn’t make the right call that year. Klein lit up Texas. At the time, folks said, “Yeah, but you can’t count on winning games like that without having a passing game”. This last year proved that a Collin Klein-led team can win games in a startling variety of ways. And I can’t help but wonder if he might have been a much more effective passer this year with half a dozen starts under his belt.

But that team would have won more games, perhaps both Baylor and CU, if the defense had been even poor, not historically awful

That’s why Carson wasn’t the limiter. 11 of us BOTCers would have run for 150 yards on that defense.

This, exactly.

Our offense was not a problem in 2010.

I do tend to agree that Klein should have maybe been the starter post-Texas, but I vehemently disagree that Coffman was a ‘limiter’ for that team.

I don't see a game-manager as being a limiter

it didnt limit the Baltimore Ravens in 02…

if the D hadn’t been so historically awful, as said above, we might have won a couple more games

by jtarkman on Feb 2, 2012 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that's what I was saying...

And, as much as a “game-manager” that Coffman was, we still had one of K-State’s most productive offenses ever.

My sig needs updated.

I think if Bender is the QB, you'll see consistent 7-9 win season potential with the offense.

With Sams, I think you’ll see a season like 2001 with Roberson where he really takes his lumps the first year, but the following two years, he’s incredible.

I don’t want to cop out, but I think you’d see an equal number of wins between the two. I just think with Sams, you have a chance for a couple of 10+ win seasons after a 6-7 win one.

My god, I loved reading that!

And I’ll never tire of remembering Michael Bishop. What a wonderful, wonderful player. He was that awful fumble away from possibly being considered one of the ten best to ever play the position. Sigh.

Because it doesn't really matter.

Spring game will show some of what to look forward to next fall, but even then things can change.

But glad the rest of you are excited about this.

What about that guy who is coming to KSU because of the Architecture program?

I didn’t see him listed. Was he part of last year’s class?

Yes

and according to the bylaws, as I read them (and posted above) Snyder can give him a scholarship next year without it counting against a recruiting class

Correct, and I would assume he'll get one, as most PWO's usually do.

Just watched the highlights for each signee on K-State HD.

A couple of standouts I didn’t expect:

All of the WRs look very good. Clark has big time speed. Judah, Burton, and Vaughn all seem to have very good hands and playmaking ability. Man, if Sams or Bender turns out to be the real deal as we imagine one or both will, look out. They have some major weapons at their disposal.

On the subject of weapons, wasn’t as impressed with the RBs.

The two players that looked most impressive were Travis Britz and Demonte Hood. Man those guys have motors and are damn athletic for their size. Could be major players down the line for us.

Watched Leverett's reel on Rivals

and now am much more impressed by him. Could be a steal.

And yeah, Clark is definitely the real deal. If Baby Lockett can be 100% coming off his injury, that receiving corps will be scary.

Clark, specifically, was very, very good at YAC.

Klein really progressed as a passer over the course of the season. With an entire offseason dedicated to him being “the man”, and going through camp and the fall, I think he’ll improve as a passer.

Now, his upside is limited, obviously, but I feel like the Texas A&M version of Klein is not out of the question.

Leaverett (sp?) has a nice motor. He seems to take a hit well and keep moving. The same with Jones.

Leaverett seemed to have more size and upside. However, I thought Jones ran with a certain amount of strength and shiftiness.

Basically, both of them are good backs to have in a RB-by-Committee approach. Jones, specifically, looked like a shiftier version of Hubert, but maybe with a hint less top end speed.

Ouch.

This is not good:

Jones, specifically, looked like a shiftier version of Hubert, but maybe with a hint less top end speed.
I love Hubert’s heart and toughness, but K-State really needs another back to step up and take more pressure off of Klein. Too often last season Hubert was unable to do so (the Iowa State and Miami games excepted). This back doesn’t have to necessarily unseat Hubert, but they do have to carve out a niche supplemental role for themselves that elicits more than the occasional Angelo Pease-in-the-Wildcat package.
Further, as I’ve pointed out repeatedly, Hubert is a non-entity in short-yardage and goal-line situations. K-State would almost be better off lining up with 10 men on offense in those situations. This is something Snyder needs to look at long and hard this offseason, whether it be running new packages, lining players up differently, or simply finding a back on the roster capable of filling that specific role. I’m really hoping Demarcus Robinson steps up in the spring and pushes Hubert hard for the starting position.

by CT-K-Stater on Feb 2, 2012 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

Hubert almost had a 1000 yd season.

If you look at games where he did not fair as well you will find inconsistent or poor line play.

He's got a lot of heart, but

there’s a reason that the only schools (other than us) that offered him a scholarship were Idaho St., La Tech, Montana St., and North Texas.

by Collin's Bloody Elbow on Feb 5, 2012 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't worry too much about RB

I’m pretty high on De Robinson. Think he redshirted last year. Tiny shifty guy who has good speed. He’ll give Hubert a run for his money this next year and if not would be a solid 2. Not sure that Pease should be counted on.

If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always gotten.

His BIO fro K-State sports.

I keep think he’s a year older than he is. Just have to remember that Randle @ OSU is a true sophomore, and they are the same age
