Open Game Thread: K-State vs. Missouri

Missouri Tigers at Kansas St. Wildcats, Jan 7, 2012 12:30 PM CST

Who: K-State vs. Missouri

When: January 7, 2012 | 12:30 p.m.

Where: Manhattan, Kan. | Bramlage Coliseum (12,358)

Media: Big 12 Network/ESPN Full Court | 1350 KMAN

At 0-1 in the conference, K-State returns home in desperate need of a win. Unfortunately, the opponent is undefeated Missouri, a team that knows it needs to win games like this if it has Big 12 championship aspirations. The K-State/Missouri series has been hard on fans' blood pressure the last few years, and this one should be just as much of a war as previous versions.

Go Cats!

That's great.

He was playing a heck of a game until the injury. Hopefully a sign of what we’ll get from him next year.

I saw him moving around right after Lamur slammed into him so I figured it wasn't too bad.

The guys who drop like a sack of taters are the ones I worry about. It will be great to have him and Davis back next year. Was this their best combined game of the season?

"best combined game" - yes, I think so

Keys to game:
1. early offensive miscues;
2. blown no call on punt return
3. losing Meshak – limited the packages we could run on D in second half
4. CK failing to run for the first down, just prior to the returned punt

I think we all knew that we couldn’t miss on any pistons if we were going to win. Arkie had a darn good defensive game plan, and Wilson is a darn good QB.

Very proud of the effort our kids gave. Arkie just had a few more players on each side of the line.

Fantastic football season.

this.

Was very impressed with the defensive effort…they did everything they could to keep the game within reach. Some of the field position we gave them was an immediate death sentence, and we held strong. I thing it’s a much different outcome if the offensive line would have played the whole game instead of the 2 or 3 possessions we got.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

We didn't have the best game plan (or execution) and we made mistakes.

Not a good combination for a win.

Arkie I think outplayed us and had a better game plan.

I do like this team a bunch and can’t wait for next year.

The whole offensive "gameplan" was an insult to the term

Dimel and Miller lost the game.

Agree quite a bit with this sentiment, Sean

BUT…Dimel and Miller didn’t drop numerous passes that hit them in the hands. Dimel and Miller didn’t decide to idiotically (beyond mental comprehension the crown move of idiocy) catch a punt – running backwards! – at the 2-yard line (TT). I’m guessing here that it wasn’t Dimel and MIller’s decision to punt on 4th-and-5 at the Arkie 35 (after calling a timeout, no less!), the brilliance of which resulted in a net field position change of 15 yards. And finally, Dimel and Miller didn’t totally, completely, shank a very make-able field goal in the clutch.
Other than that, I’m all aboard the offensive play-calling/adjustment/preparation performance was deserving of a solid F-.

by CT-K-Stater on Jan 7, 2012 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

That's a good point about the drops - awful performance for too long

Thompson’s stupidity with that punt is inexcusable.

But they couldn’t run, at all, against an awful running team?

Yeah, that frustrated me,too

But the one area where they clearly held a physical edge over us was on their D-line. Those guys just blasted our offensive linemen all game long. By the time their RE got those back-to-back sacks on Klein late in the game our O-line had been totally spanked. This very matchup – D-line versus O-line – has more than anything else been the single area where SEC teams have dominated the other conferences.

I’m still pissed off about Thompson’s stupidity on that punt return. Positively mind-boggling. I mean fuck, didn’t he even learn that in pee-wee ball? Zero excuse. In a game where the field position battle is clearly being lost early-on and the D is holding on desperately he goes and hands the opponent 3 points (and we were lucky it was only 3). Should have had his scholarship revoked right at that moment. Even at 40 I could have gone down on the field and done better on that play. Still steams me.

This will sound strange,

but I felt at that point in the game that Snyder should have just punted there, even if it was only 2nd or 3rd down (and 33). There was about a -30 percent chance that we convert in that situation. Hell, simply having Klein quick-kick the damn ball (as to prevent Adams being on the field in obvious special teams down) might have been better.

by CT-K-Stater on Jan 7, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

I called it in the game thread - before the fumbe

I said “jus run it 2 times and punt” … I could sense a bad thing coming. I was highly disappointed in Snyder’s decision to drop back and pass on 2nd and 28, because we were out of kilter … and it is when we get out of kilter when bad things happen.

And there were at least 2 times in the 4th qtr where we were at 2nd and 6 or so, we were clearly in 4 down territory, and we don’t try running it twice. I couldn’t figure that out … play calling … big fail.

But effort by the D was great. And after we got over our first qtr jitters, the receivers played okay. Broderick and Harper didn’t have good games, and why we don’t get the tight end involved more, I’ll never understand.

oh hail the Purple and White

by Furnace76 on Jan 7, 2012 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

Yup, I'm pretty much on board with all your sentiments here

The only (very slight) exception I’d make – and I know the conventional football fan doesn’t (or won’t) quite grasp this – is that I wouldn’t have run anything on 2nd down other than tell Klein to take the snap and punt the ball (or hell, if run in practice and you find Pease boots it better, just have him do it out of the Wildcat).
Of all the gimmicky edges Snyder is renowned for, I’m unsure why the quick-kick is not in the playbook. Klein wouldn’t have had to boot it 45 yards – just get the damn thing off. The value here is that Adams would NOT be out on the field because Arkie would have no inkling of what was coming.

by CT-K-Stater on Jan 7, 2012 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

hadn't thought of the old quick kick -

not a bad idea, just to make sure Adams isn’t returning the ball.

But for all the reputation Snyder has for having some “gimmick” plays, he rarely uses them. I’ll bet the reason he doesn’t do “quick kick” is he doesn’t want to “spend time” on the play in practice, because it does have to be executed well or it can backfire big time.

oh hail the Purple and White

by Furnace76 on Jan 7, 2012 7:35 PM CST up reply actions

Good point about Snyder

Not a hard play to execute at all and would have come in extremely handy at that moment of the game.

Here come the asshat articles on how the SEC is dominant...

http://www.foxsportssouthwest.com/01/06/12/Arkansas-proves-SEC-is-still-conference-/landing_big12.html?blockID=641404&feedID=3585

Of course, he writes the article behind the cover of not allowing comments. So we have one head to head match up and everything is proven. Also this guy must have been watching a different game then I saw. Because it was obvious that both teams were evenly matched. K-State made the majority of the mistakes and lost…period. There was no noticeable speed difference, no super humans on the Arky side. Seven points were obtained on a punt return with a no call block in the back. Both teams played hard but KSU shot itself in the foot repeatedly. Probably the last I will say anything about the game but I am tired of the SEC falsehoods. It is high time we expand back to 12 and get on with the Big XII conference (looking at you UT).

I had the same thoughts when I read that article this morning. It might just be my degree talking, but when somebody says “x proves y” I automatically start looking for the supporting data. A sample size of one game “proves” nothing, and if this was written about anything other than sports he would have been laughed off the face of the Earth. Then again, he is an Aggie grad…

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

I think talent wise

Arkie had us slightly out gunned. The SEC is the best conference. B/12 is a close second. Arkie would have won the b/12 this year. That was a darn good team that beat us last night, and they were 3rd in their division. JMO.

Talent was not the difference...we were able to move the ball with our base offense.

The defense played lights out even with Cosh calling several bad sets. Our mistakes were the difference.

by Catbacker98 on Jan 7, 2012 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, you are correct here Furnace

Their D-line versus our O-line was a mismatch. And Wilson is a very good QB and Arkie has some seriously nice receivers. But their D-line versus our O-line aside, Catbacker is right the rest of the way. I wasn’t convinced that Arkie was otherwise much better than us. We did a hell of a lot to beat ourselves last night. Can’t do that against any credible opponent, particularly one ranked #6 who came ready to play.

by CT-K-Stater on Jan 7, 2012 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

I was simply talking about the tone in which the article was written. Like I said, I have a strong scientific background so to me “proof” and “sample size of one” shouldn’t be in the same article. Arkansas was the better team last night and they won, but this can’t be used as the end all evidence that the SEC is better than the Big XII.

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity is forever.

The support the coaches get from K-State right now, possibly.

I think Currie knows that he has a sweet job right though. Admin supports him and the fans like the current state of the athletics knowing that everything is going well, and improving.

The only issue is that we can only sell about 50,000 seats at the Bill. The additional premium seats will help, but otherwise all they can do to increase income is to add seats to Bramlage.

Nobody is immune to anyone on the road in the conference this year.

Today is exactly how MU/KSU should play out in MHK. As long as we don’t turn it over and don’t lose our minds on defense, we dominate this team at home. Terrible matchup for MU.

When we go to Columbia, the refs are going to kill us with calls and no-calls, but we’ll have a decent chance if we play hard for 40.

Had the same reaction against Howard.

The guy looks like he is really working with the players and teaching. Love it.

Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

Fantastic

I know Greenawalt may as well be glued to the chair, but I always see Underwood up. I like having Evans up too. What’s his specialty?

Evans I think is guards and small forwards.

That dry spell with the reserves did what was needed.

Still have have 3 fouls on 4 players.

Awesome.

Shane and Rod deserve A+, BigE.

It might. Mizzou wasn't that high, though.

Again ... just like ku did to us in lawrence ...

This is just holding serve.

Nice game. Time to do it to Baylor.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Jan 7, 2012 2:47 PM CST reply actions

Need Jamar healthy against Baylor, otherwise I have no concerns about the ability of the team can play.

Yeah, Jamar will definitely be important against Baylor.

He’s the best choice to match up against Quincy Acy.

I'm going to do a post-game,

But need to watch the game, first. Listened to the first half up to about 5:00 left, so will find a replay and post afterward. I’m actually excited to watch.

Good game overall.

JO needs a shooting coach, if he had someone to teach him to shoot from 10’ he’d have a double double every game. Otherwise not much to say other than our 6-10 players need to work on maintaining the game when they are all in at the same time.

Great win for the ladies! So much for that hot-shooting KU team.

Just so you guys know,

I put up an FanPost about something my dad got from a Longhorn fan about the difference between Arkansas and Kansas State players when it came to the Beef Bowl… If someone could bump that to the front page that’d be great. We need to share this with as many people as possible.

Saw it and tweeted it.

Can’t say that, after reading it, I’m really that surprised.
