Cotton Bowl Second Half Open Thread: K-State vs. Arkansas

More please. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

After a bad first 28 minutes, K-State forced an Arkansas fumble and scored a touchdown to cut the Razorbacks' lead to 19-9 at halftime. Everybody's thoughts should be with K-State defensive lineman Meshak Williams, who was carted off the field after a violent collision with teammate Emmanuel Lamur. Let's go get this one for Meshak.

Go Cats!

Arkansas' passing game has been a little surprising.

They’re not throwing a bunch of underneath and mid-range stuff, which is what usually kills us (see, e.g., OU). Find seams in the zone, give the receiver a chance to make plays in space. Instead, they pretty much only throw it over the top.

Just an observation.

I go back and forth on this concept

On one hand there’s no denying Jones’ is frickin’ good. Don’t understand why OU people think he’s no good because he’s excelleng, BUT…..

Whatever the ‘IT’ factor that Tebow or Klein posses to make up for their shortcomings in athleticism, I think Jones is the inverse of that. He just knows how to lose, and derp at the right (or wrong depending on your perspective) moments.

"Nor yet in Dell?"

by GTcat on Jan 6, 2012 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

Jones just does not pass well under pressure.

He wasn’t helped much by his receivers, Broyles excepted, either. The Tech game… man, those guys weren’t even reaching for catchable balls while Jones was trying to mount a comeback.

Precisely

Excellent analysis, Jon. Jones was good in the Tech game, but his receivers were not. Onwards towards the end of the year, though, Jones wasn’t helping his cause either by throwing high and wide.

Griffen, Landry, Weeden, all of the great qbs in the Big 12 do not look the same with pressure in their face. Almost no one does.

by ksu-cjw88 on Jan 6, 2012 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

Don't make me post the quote about Cosh again.

Stop ‘em. Make ’em go backwards. Score from forcing a turnover. None of this frigging ’we just need to outscore the other team so it doesn’t matter if you let them get a first down or score.’

That is just a piss poor attitude for a defensive coordinator. Your job as DC is to stop the other team, to put your players in a place where they can stop the other team. To teach the players how to get in position and execute to stop the other team. Anything other than completely taking the other team out of their plans is not acceptable.

Get a clue Cosh.

other than embarrassment at not getting into the Big 10 what else could they be mad about. It’s not like we kicked their ass for 110 years like we did to aTm. They built their complex up over a century but Missouri? They just dont belong in the $EC.

Missouri's move is more of a perception thing than anything else.

They want to be relevant and moving to the SEC they think will help this.

The perception of some is that Texas is evil and will basically kill any conference. Notice that the teams that play with Texas are not the ones making the argument, it is the teams that lose to Texas regularly that make the argument.

Personally I like Texas and enjoy the games, even when we lose.

KS, OK and TX are all similar states so I’m glad (and hope it continues) the Big XII continues to survive.

You have a class program run by a great coach. I expected to hear a lot of SEC hate in here tonight and was pleasantly surprised that there was not much at all.

I’d love to have our coach, the Dark Evil Lord and Master himself Nick Saban to schedule you guys for a home and home, or even a neutral site game, I think it would be a fun matchup.

Your team played hard and did well. You should be proud of the results. Arky is a tougher team than a lot of people give them credit for.

by Ahearn Alley on Jan 6, 2012 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

After what some of those guys said about Alabama

When they should be bitching about the BCS, I lost pretty much all of my respect for their fanbase.

Got no problem with them being hurt after being left out of the title game. There is a reason why the SEC has been lobbying for a playoff for years now. But to hate on the team that got there ahead of you when we did nothing but what we were supposed to have done was uncalled for.

It is like they expected Saban to step up and say, “No thank you, we were planning on going to Shreveport this year.”

by El Kabong!!! on Jan 6, 2012 11:10 PM CST up reply actions

there are losers in every bunch.

I’m sure if the interwebs were around for the first time ‘Bama got snubbed for their first legitimate chance at a nat’l title someone in your bunch would say something stupid too…it’s sports man. I get sick of it too, but to think that one particular fanbase (other than Nebraska of course—see this is part of the joke) is littered with more than another is just short sighted.

I drove through your state in Sept. for the first time in a long time. Beautiful state. Even dropped in Fayettville to see for myself how “good of a fit culturally” Arkansas would relate to Big12 country. dropped by the Stadium. Neat campus.

You know I had pipe dreams of you in our conference (yea I know that’s why I said pipe dreams). And well it was about what I expected. It geographically felt like a tweener state. Just like MO. Woulda loved to have ya, but some things just aren’t meant to be. Kind of like you on this board for the next 24hrs. It’s just not fitting right now. Playing when it is in the 40F is much more difficult when you are used to warmer weather. The last time we played Texas in MHK, it was chilly and we won big. The previous time to this year, aTm lost big. Both times is was cold, not chilly but cold. we are used to it, but it does effect play if you are not used to it.

We loved snow days when I was growing up because we could play football and have fun in the snow.

I've lived in FL

And when the low temps are measured in hours is much different than when it gets cold for extended periods of time.

I dislike NE temperatures a great deal, so I know what I’m talking about. Have you ever spent time in a place where you only have 9 days above freezing for 3 months? I have and although KS is cold it is not semi-frozen tundra.

Playing football in cold weather, i.e. below 50F, is much different than playing when the weather is nice. Like I said come play in Nov/Dec and see how the weather effect play.

One of my classmates did a report on high heat incidence days. KS had as high of ranking as any state in the SE.

For example. KS will regularly see temps above 100F in Jul and Aug, in Manhattan (in a river valley) there is also 50%+ humidity.

if we didn’t give them their 1st 3 pts and the refs gave them the next 7. Ten points was too much to overcome. Our defense was playing lights out early. And we missed Meshak, — I think it limited what we could do and the packages we could run.

The core of our team comes back next year, and we’ve recruited really, really well thus far. Hopefully, we finish strong because what we’re infusing in is greater than what is going out.

We picked up a really nice tackle prospect and Foketi will probably get a sixth year. I think things look good in 2012.

Also, you never know, Bryce may come back.

I'm hoping for another ten win season. That would be just special.

And then we get Sams in 2013 for our first season post castle press box.

Seemed like tonight that the offense never really got in a good rhythm

we had one good drive and that seemed like that was it. Colin never looked comfortable.

Here is the way I see it next year - from a UT fans perspective

Assuming that WVU joins the conference, we will finish in this order – top to bottom:

1. Texas (with average QB play)
2. OU (sucks)
3. KSU
4. WVU
5. TCU
6. TTU
7. Baylor (If RBII goes to The League)
8. Okie Lite
9. Iowa State
10. Kansas

UT will lose one game next year to KSU (we are cursed with you A-holes!) :-)

So, what you really mean when you take the homer goggles off, is

1. KSU
2. OU (sucks)
3. Texas
4. etc

Anyone else like me

when we crossed midfield on that last drive, get upset when we didn’t call a timeout after that first snap right around 1:03 left on 2nd and 15? I just knew we’d hurry up and patch together a crappy play that wouldn’t result in a first down, plus drain the clock. Don’t think we would have won persay, but thought it would go a lot further than what we ended up doing.

Though I like our chances at home in 2012 vs y’all unless the conf office decides to do some schedule jockying (please come to our conf in 2012 WVU!), though I think 2013 UT’s probably in the nat’l title hunt again.

I grew up west of Wichita myself. Thanks for stoppin by, hope you didn't feel too much

like a stranger. Keep your turf watered, don’t want it lose its hue. I think about the only way we invite you to our conference if you can somehow rearrange a map so that Colorado borders Washington and Idaho borders Kansas. I don’t own any college paraphenallia outside of my KSU stuff but I have thought about buying a Georgia Tech hat (because I could wear my initials on my head) and a Boise State hat (if I could find one with that grey oversized Bronco that shows up on 1 side of your helmet sometimes) from time to time…

I’ve appreciated Boise for some time. 2007 Fiesta probably sealed the deal, but I appreciated them before that. I just hate our BCS system. It’s hard enough to go undefeated in a single season, but I feel like Boise has to go undefeated 3 consecutive years to prove their worth to be considered a candidate for the title. And if you lose 1 game in those 3 years, that cycle has to start over from scratch. I hope your athletic department gets great frequent flyer miles!

Thanks GT, Come visit OBNUG sometime, everybody is real nice(no swearin)use BW(bad word) instead.

But we’d like more input from Big 12 fans. Nebraska didn’t like us, and OU fans still think their superior, go figure. And why the heck is Colorado in the Pac 12 anyway?
Boise is a great town, and the blue field is a fun experience. Just think, we’ll be flying right by Kansas quite a bit???? Were closer than WV aren’t we? Just sayin. Over & out….

I'll think about it.

I think part of the appreciation is Boise’s just the exaggerated version of KSU. They rose from the ashes, and of course are much smaller. Lot’s of similarities, just seems like BSU took those similarities to the nth degree.

"Nor yet in Dell?"

by GTcat on Jan 7, 2012 11:25 PM CST up reply actions

Hey GT, I take that as a complement. That being said,

I grew up in Kansas, and don’t think I don’t know about the KU/KSU rivalry. Cities & towns be divided. However, at the same time, I also know what great schools they both are. I can say that without too much backlash, now. I’m far enough away.
However, all kidding aside, in comparison Boise St does not yet possess the century old tradition, greek & academics you have there. They are close to OSU, and now TCU, and are most certainly making great strides to narrow the gap. It would speed that process up, if somehow we could also be a part of the Big !2.
The Big East is a good move for now, and might turn out to have even better results than we could have expected? All that is an if? The Big 12 now, would be PERFECT!!!!
IMHO, K St is a bit/lot better than KU in football, and KU is a bit/lot better than K St in BBall. Do I have that right? If not, why do I find myself rooting for each as such?
Anyway, thanks for your response, I like the connection with my roots..

Great year K-State! Snyder has y'all on the right track no surprise there (keep the smash mouth style going, I like that style)....

Was impressed by all the Big 12 solidarity on the thread. I have seen a lot of comments on other blogs suggesting that is not always the case. Good luck next year, beat the Horns again and always.

Reporter: What would you say a Greg Studrawa offense is like? Stud:

"Attack and be very physical…fly around…attacking, come after you and come after you and come after you…." Me: I love this answer.

Well a disappointing game to say the least.

Didn’t play our best game of the year, that’s for sure. Was really impressed by the defensive effort, though. It’s too bad ’shake and Hartman got hurt. I thought they were both playing the best games of their career up until their injuries.

The receivers were awful. Klein played alright. Couldn’t get much going on the ground, but threw the ball nicely. I’m pained to wonder what would have happened if those balls weren’t dropped.

Anyway, credit to Arkansas. They’ve got a good squad. And against a team of that caliber, you just can’t make the mistakes we made last night.

Phenomenal season. Was a lot of fun in these parts this year. Thanks as always to TB, Pan, BC, morse, and Ahearn for the hard work. Can’t wait til next year!

Now, Frank and the Junkyard Cats, please don’t allow this to be the worst K-State sports week in recent memory!
