Cotton Bowl Open Thread: K-State vs. Arkansas

Kansas St. Wildcats at Arkansas Razorbacks, Jan 6, 2012 7:00 PM CST

Who: K-State vs. Arkansas

What: 2012 Cotton Bowl Classic

When: January 6, 2012 | 7:00 p.m.

Where: Arlington, Texas | Cowboys Stadium (80,000)

Media: FOX | 1350 KMAN

For the first time since 2001, K-State will play its postseason football in the Cotton Bowl. This time, the venue will be Cowboys Stadium rather than the venerable Cotton Bowl, and the opponent will be the SEC's Arkansas, rather than Tennessee. Enjoy every minute, folks, as this is your last football for eight long months.

Go Cats!

Why I'm concerned about this game
Hartman added, "Like Coach Cosh said, it doesn’t matter how many yards you gave up or how many touchdowns the other team scored, if your team has more points than them that’s really all that matters."

sigh

I think offense will do well, but we don’t have the defensive mindset (from the coaches) that we need to stop the other team regardless.

I'm still shaking my head on this.

If I’m a defense coach, my goal is to get guys into position to make plays and stop the other team. Not slow the other team down enough that the offense can win.

Doubtful.

18-22 year olds that have the training and conditioning that football players go through should not be tired this early in the game.

When I was 23, I could play 3-5 hours of basketball then do it again the next day. If you are in what is considered ‘elite’ shape … it should take about 3 or 4 games before you are tired.

Not this year. He has pushed every single button. But I’ve never thought him to be an elite game day coach.

Last year, in fact, I’d argue was one of his poorest jobs of game day coaching. In particular, he was badly outcoached in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Greatest program builder ever. By far. Unreal. But good-not-great at game day calls, I say.

Yes. Wildcat hand sign as he went off the field.

Crowd loved it.

Arkie fan here

Hope your player is o.k. Wilson should not have run in that situation (but this is the second time this quarter he has not listened to me).

Thanks regarding Meshak.

So far Arkie is outplaying and out coaching K-State. This doesn’t happen often, so be proud of your team.

Praying for the kid

Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!

Bama fan here.

Hope that kid’s OK. Used it as a teaching tool for my middle school aged son about seeing what you hit. Sadly, it was his teammate that put the head down in this case.

Anyone with a kid who plays

should show him those replays.

I do love how Fox shows the marching bands.

ESPN could care less if marching bands exist most of the time.

I think the D grades need to be at least a B they are the only reason we are in this game right now.

by KSUEMAW! on Jan 6, 2012 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Secondary gave up a long pass with AB covering the receiver ... that is not good D

Also the rushing D has given up several QB rushes for first down or more.

Your welcome, my pleasure-glad Meshak is OK

If you ever wanted to see Boise St play...may be a good chance. Love em or Hate em, they are always interesting; and now, no matter where you live, "They're Coming To Your City"

Honestly, the injury to Meshak changed this game for me. I just want him to be okay.

This is the most coverage I have seen of a college football halftime show...

…since I was in the marching band (and Phil Hewitt was director).

Thank you, Fox.

SEC probably isn't willing to play a home and home against the Big XII.

And you don't understand home and home versus bowls?

Seriously, bowl matchups are not about figuring out the best team, other than recent history with the BCS They are about finding match ups that draw visitors.

If you want to see how teams compare then play home and home series. It really doesn’t help the team that travels that year but it is better than comparing bowl records when like this year K-State could have beaten VT or Michigan but did not have the opportunity to play them.

For example K-State and Bama both beat a team by similar amounts this year. Common opponent. All that tells us is that K-State and Bama can both play at home.

If you want to see if your team is good then play a home and home.

O-Line and Special teams had a horrendous game

O-Line: too many penalties in 1st Q and then gave up the big sack with fumble. Could not create running lanes for Hubert, Pease (can HCBS throw the wildcat formation out of the playbook, please) or HBCK. Also gave up too many sacks when game was on the line in 4th Q.
Special teams: In short, nothing worked. Punt return for TD, punting into end zone from 45 yard line, missed FG (real bad miss, would like to know what was Cantele thinking)

Defense played superb. Heck, we got 2 sacks too. But injuries to Meshaulk and Hartman proved costly.

Well, overall good game. We proved Big12 can play defense too and the #6/8 rankings are about right for these teams.
