K-State Football
He's not a vocal leader, but Arthur Brown has invigorated K-State's defense this season. And he'll be back at middle linebacker next season for the Wildcats, in case there was any doubt.
This headline presented without further comment: "After tough year, Chris Cosh turns K-State's defense around."
Is K-State primed for a second run of bowl games under Bill Snyder?

Even without class in session, the old barn down the river will be jumping for K-State's visit tomorrow night. Tickets available.
Rush the Court checks in on the Big 12 just in time for conference play to begin, and gives its new year's resolutions for the top half of the conference.
Big 12 Basketball
Conference play began last night with Baylor's 61-52 home win over Texas A&M. The game wasn't that close, but Baylor let the Aggies back in the game in the second half.

The Big 12 is now 6-1 in bowl games after Oklahoma State beat Stanford in overtime in the Fiesta Bowl.

The two BCS games yesterday were really exciting games
for the most part. And with the two best BCS games now done, I feel no need to tune into ESPN/ABC for the two joke games and the SECWest Champ(Part II) game. I would tune in to Fox on Friday, but I will already be in Dallas, utilizing my (cheap) student ticket for the game :-)
After watching those games, it appears Oregon is headed straight for a clash with USC for the PAC-12 title next year, Okie State is headed for a 8-9 win campaign after loosing their two best players on offense (one who tied a Fiesta Bowl record held by Darnell McDonald…), same with Wisky and Stanford. Of those latter three, I would say that Wisconsin probably has the most pieces already in place for another run at the B1G Championship, mostly because they have the best returning D of the three.
Yeah, but Russell Wilson is one and done.
I think he really elevated that offense. Plus, they lost their OC to Pittsburgh.
I don’t think OSU will drop off as much as people think. That’s what everyone said after Robinson graduated and Bryant went pro, and look what happened instead.
Chelf’s been in the system for two years behind Weeden and the defense can’t help but be better.
If I’m an Okie Lite fan, I like where they are going forward a hell of a lot better than where Baylor is, for instance.
After what they did following Robinson/Bryant with Weeden/Blackmon ...
I pretty much expect Gundy to come back with Montana/Rice.

I never really saw Arthur as the type to leave this team early
especially with all the work he put in last season. Yeah, He would probably be a 3-4 round pick, but he doesnt seem to be chasing the money (he did, after all, leave Miami…). It almost seemed preposterous that someone would even ask him that, but I am no reporter.
Now my curiosity with the draft does extend to the “other” Brown. I wonder if he will actually declare and try to get drafted on talent alone (probably a late 7th pick by Oakland), or if Arthur can put some sense into him (and convince HCBS to give Bryce one more shot), and have BB come back next year as a solid part of the stable of backs that HBCK sometimes handsoff/pitches too.
Doesn't seem that preposterous to me.
In fact, I a m pleasantly relieved that he chose to come back. at the beginning of the season it seemed like a sure-thing that he would turn pro after this year.

I just never saw it as a "sure thing"
not with Arthur anyway. Players I could have seen with big years leaving early: Bryce Brown, Chris Harper
I thought it seemed that way at the beginning of the season.
That perception, of course, depended on the type of season he had. While Arthur did have a great season, I think it wasn’t as great as many predicted early on, largely because of that mid season injury he battled through that made him a bit slow in a couple of games.
I guess I just don’t think it was that ridiculous of a question to ask.

From my perspective, Harper is a victim of the system we play.
I don’t think he gets enough respect as a receiver, as a go-to guy, especially from the talking heads. I would hate to have gone without him this season. I think he’s been a major factor of where we are now and not just because of the TD catches.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

He can already make all the catches
and runs NFL caliber routes. Perfect example was the comeback route on the TD catch against Texas. Perfect execution, great catch, and great awareness to get both feet inbounds.
Plus he has size. He is going to be another Hines Ward style receiver. Not a burner, but a guy you can always depend on to make a catch, take a hit, and get up and do it again the next play.
Agree - Harper is a stud and will have a nice career at the next level
His size, strength, athleticism and ability to move his body while in the air combined together make him a mismatch for corners at this level and will in the NFL, too.
Another year of production
probably moves Arthur’s stock up in the draft for next year. He’s making the smart choice and he’ll get far more attention and hype in 2012 than he did during the 2011 season what with K-State coming off a 10-2 regular season.
I think Arthur made the right choice. However, he's going to play OLB in the NFL.
If he can get through the whole season healthy, my God, he’ll put up some beastly numbers.
I do have concerns about the LB spot vacated by Lamur. He had a lot of skills that we could leverage. Great tackler, and due to his experience as a safety, he was a more than adequate pass coverage LB.
We’ll miss him a lot.

He's got the at-home coaching to fix that

You nailed my concerns regarding the loss of Lamur, too, Pan
I think people wildly underestimate what Lamur brought to the defense in terms of having a linebacker who could play pass coverage quite well. Particularly down the stretch of the season (he was huge in the Texas game). When K-State was in the middle stretch of the season where Tre Walker was often off the field in the 4-2-5 package, it was Lamur out there covering (well) in space. That is a very tough quality to replace and something all the more necessary when playing in the Big-12 conference.
I think one skill that Tuggle could bring in (if he gets the start)
is the ability to read QB’s and routes. Thats not something that most defensive players are coached on to the level that Tuggle has been. If he develops, he could fill the void left by Lamur quite nicely…if
On Tre
I think he can fill that gap…we just don’t know how that kid can pass cover, never really got to see him try. Obviously Lamur was better, but how much? Hard to quantify. Give him an off-season and we shall see. I just think Tre is a smart kid and has a great work ethic that I’m not so sure the void left by Lamur will end up being as drastic as one might think. I’m not trying to discredit what Lamur has done, b/c he did great for only playing LB for a season (well I guess some at the Pinstripe Bowl too).

It can’t be many and I can’t think of any off the top of my head, even though a lot of our players don’t fit in a traditional NFL system on offense there had to be a few on defense.
Terry Pierce is the only one that comes to mind that left early

Yes, he did ...
He is the one who left early that I consider a success story. And I was totally mystified at his move at the time. But he had a solid NFL career. More than any non-all american should reasonably hope for.

And the record speaks against leaving early for Snyder players
Pierce, Canty, Butler—all out of the NFL after a few years of sub-par performances and traveling through several teams.
Players that stayed and graduated had (or are having) good careers: Cartwright, Newman, Sproles, McGraw, Lilja, Clary, Nelson, Banks (to name a few)
I don't know how much you can count Banks as a "Snyder" player.
Or, for that matter, Nelson (though obviously more so).
But your point remains a valid one.

Nelson was "recruited" by Snyder, and spent his first couple years under Snyder
remember, he, along with Jeromy Clary, carried HCBS off the field in ’05
Hence the "(though obviously more so)" caveat I attached.
But he also spent his junior and senior years under Prince, so my point was that he wasn’t just a “Snyder” kid.

Though I think you’re just circling back to my point a couple comments ago.
He was spotted and brought in by Snyder, and created into a WR by Snyder, then RP/Freeman took him and made him look really good for a couple years. RP wouldn’t have landed the kid, but he would probably not have been a “big name” under Snyder…the systems are just too different
I actually disagree with that.
Nelson was turning into a big WR in Snyder’s last year. That was his break-out year with Alan Evridge under center.
He actually took a step back in his junior year under Prince. I think Nelson would have done fine under Snyder.

He wouldnt have had the numbers to be an award winner
under Synder’s system. Quincy Morgan didnt, but was a good receiver, same could be said for others. Snyder molded Nelson, but RP’s system with Freeman at the helm gave him the opportunity for his “big name” senior season
If I recall, Nelson was injured somewhat off and on his jr. year.
I don’t think Prince helped him the way he used him during his recovery time. Prince pulled a Snyder and never said anything about Jordy’s status week to week and then just spotted him in and out during games, even using him as a decoy at times.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

But he was never a Snyder player
and I think he left because HCBS made him work too hard. He wasn’t good enough (in my mind) to have left early and I think he got VERY lucky getting drafted at all, let alone in the 5th round. He is still just a back-up for Chicago
I would put a caveat on Moore. He had academic issues before and during college.
He fell into our lap because he qualified at the eleventh hour, redshirted after his freshman year because he was a part of that tutor scandal, and I think every year after that was just a blessing he was eligible.
As soon as he could get out, it was probably best he did.

[Recruiting Coordinator Joe Gordon’s] son, LeAndrew Joseph Gordon, is now a junior in high school and a standout receiver/defender in the Arlington, Texas, prep ranks.
Another legacy, but a good one like Tyler Lockett. I wouldn’t doubt that he comes to K-State, and even if he is “only” as good as his Dad of defense, he would be a great addition…though if Tyler is any indication (like it could be), he could be better than his “Towel Waving” Dad. And maybe he’ll bring a teammate or two from Texas with him…

I don’t think this has been mentioned, but with Raheem Morris being fired from the bucs, what if we made him HCIW.
I know the board really likes Jim Leavitt, and I still think he is a better option, but what about Raheem as a plan B option (for our wish list).
The defense was serviceable in the year he was d coordinator at KSU, and I think the buc cover two would be a good defense against the spread. (this may be wrong, but I’m too lazy to look up numbers right now) I do recognize there to be some weakness by relying on a four man rush with that your primary defense, but he started blitzing more the last couple of years.
I don’t know just a thought I had and am bored at the moment.

I don't think I've ever put my theroy on HCBS's replacement on BOTC
But I think that it will be Michael Smith. I know that he is only a WR coach, he has also been a GA and RB coach, under him players like Darren Sproles, Tyler Lockett, Josh Scobey, and David Allen have had good careers. Plus he played for Snyder plus (to the best of my knowledge) he is the leader in time spent under Snyder both playing and coaching. That being said I think I would still rather have Venables or someone with a bigger resume but I think I could live with Michael Smith being our coach.
I think he's developed into a much, much better coach since he left the first time.
I don’t know when you were in school, but when I was there (‘00-’04), Smith was in Aggieville more than I was. I saw him there on multiple occasions. Now, that’s not to say you can’t have a good time and be a good coach, but I think there has been a maturation process in the last few years for him. He’s always been a very good position coach, and now he’s a very good recruiter as well. I think he’s definitely valuable to have in the program.
If Currie is still here when Bill retires, and I think that’s a less than 50% chance if Bill stays another 3-4 years, I think we’ll go in a completely different direction because Currie is going to want to make the kind of good, splash hire that will get him a job at a school with an enormous budget. Remember, this was the guy that had a hand in bringing both Kiffin and Pearl to Tennessee.
If it’s not Currie, who knows? But if it is, we’re going to get a name of some sort. A mid-major “coach of the moment”, some assistant from a big program, or some displaced coach from an elite program or the NFL that wants to rebuild his name (like Rodriguez or Leach did at Arizona and WSU, respectively). Currie will make sure that happens. He wants to pad that resume something fierce.

I believe he was only associate, or assistant AD at Tennessee…so I don’t really know how much involvement he really had with the Kiffin/Pearl hires. (hopefully the kind of experience that makes a guy recognize the red flags several miles away).

Not everyone can win here, even a flashy “young gun” coordinator or big name coach. K-State is different, and you have to understand that difference to be able to be successful here. Snyder knows, I’m not sure if Currie knows enough…
I think Currie will keep Snyder in the process as much as politically necessary, and no more.
Currie is an aggressive, upwardly mobile career man. He will want that hire to have his fingerprints all over it.
The man is a fantastic and dynamic administrator, and I’m so happy we’ve had him, but if he’s here longer than ten years, it will be because no one wanted to hire him. It will not be because he didn’t try to interview somewhere else.
And he has interviewed elsewhere.

Oh, I agree that he is looking to make a splash
but I think he is smart enough to realize that this place is different, and only Snyder really knows how different that is. He could have Snyder approve the final list, or he could just ask for some basic thoughts or ideas on what the next coach should look like. Like you said, Snyder will be involved in the process, but I think he will be more involved than maybe you do.
I think you're right that he'll have a conversation about what a coach at KSU should have, and he may get his thoughts on successors...
But I can’t stress to all of you how much Bill wants Sean to have that job. Any list Bill gives anyone, or would be approved by Bill, would need to have Sean on it. And, for that reason, I think a cursory conversation is all that will be had.

You mention Kiffin and Pearl for Currie have a part in.
Kiffin outside of USC hasn’t been all that great of a coach.
Pearl received a 3 year show-cause from the NCAA.
I do not think either of those can be considered as good hires.

The point is that they were big names.
The other point is that Currie is seen as a big-time money maker and fantastic administrator, but he’s wearing a scarlet “A” for being associated with the dumpster fire hires at Tennessee.
He needs to make a big-time hire at Kansas State. That could be good for us in football, but it’s also why I’m a little scared that he may be a little aggressive with Frank. TB and I have stated in multiple conversations that we are afraid that Currie will push Frank out to make a hire here that will get him a job somewhere else.
I’m just hoping that Currie can sit still in Manhattan long enough to not do something too aggressive.

KSU is going to be up and down in football after Snyder (probably more down than up).
But KSU could be really good in basketball for a really long time. It’s sitting right there.

I think football can do just fine.
What we have on the horizon, facilities wise, will be ahead of similar competitors. It’s going to be first-class.
Let’s remember how bad Ron was at building a program, and he was still 17-20. You can go to bowls on a yearly basis here as long as we cultivate the right kind of atmosphere and hire the right kinds of coaches.
There are a lot of really quality guys that have been burned by big-time jobs (i.e. Rich Rod) that would do a great job here and love making millions and being adored for winning 60-70% of their games.
We have tremendous fan support here, unbelievable access to fertile Texas recruiting grounds, a young, strong administration (with an SEC mentality in terms of athletics) and expectations that are in line with our status.
This is a good job if you can sell it to the right people. I think we’ve got the right people in place to do that.

There is going to be considerable pressure on Currie
for this hire, too. I mean, the RP debacle is still fresh in many boosters and fans minds. He is probably going to have to do his best selling job yet on whoever it is he hires to replace Bill, especially if he goes outside the “family.”
I have confidence he can make a good hire, but I hope, for our sakes, that he errs on the side of caution and not on the side of high-risk/high-reward. I don’t know him well enough to speculate which side he might fall towards, but the pessimist in me agrees with you Pan that he is going to swing for the fence and hope he hits a home-run (again)

any new football facilities (aside from a press box renovation, what new facilities?) haven’t been built yet, and we simply cannot compete with programs like Oklahoma, Texas and (now) Okie State in that regard. So long as we are:
A) a rural school in a low population state far away from mountains, beaches and a city (and these are things we cannot change),
B) our immediate recruiting base is one that produces some gems but is not exactly talent-rich,
C) not exactly a household name with the TV networks, and
D) shunned by the big-time bowls (or, I should say, BCS at-large bowls)
any sustained success will be difficult to come by. That is why the post-Snyder hire looms large and whomever is AD will need to be thorough and careful in their search. I’m guessing Currie will still be here, and though you see him as a merc (I’m in no position to disagree), I’m not sure he goes down the “Lane Kiffin”, splashy-name path. He’ll want a solid name, and probably one that is acceptable to Snyder, but Currie’s “legacy” will hardly be helped if he whiffs on this hire. Particularly in that there will be Bill Snyder Act 3.
I would argue against point A
in that Manhattan is becoming less “rural” all the time. It is now large enough, statistically, to have its own Metropolitan area, and is still growing. Plus, you add in the regular commercial service to both Dallas and Chicago, and it is no longer remote. It is now easier to fly to Manhattan than Lawrence or Topeka.
And I agree about sustained success. Even Snyder had difficulties when he tried to go toe-to-toe with the bigger boys late in the first run. He changed his approach, and went back to what was successful, but you have to know the school and area to be successful at K-State…just ask RP
Manhattan may be less rural all the time
but its not exactly a 300,000-plus metropolitan area (doesn’t necessarily need to be – it has plenty of its own charms some recruits will fall in love with the easygoing, friendly atmosphere of the Little Apple). That said, I totally agree about the improved access to Manhattan helping K-State. Unfortunately, however, you have to get the kids outside the state to look past the bi-coastal and metropolitan stereotype of Kansas being the absolute middle of nowhere. K-State will always have to rely on players looking for a second-chance or kids who are high-character to begin with.
Though if Wichita State had a fb program and in the MWC (how's that for a hypothetical?)
I doubt many kids would pick it over KSU to play football just because it’s in a city of 300,000+
I do understand the point you make, and I too would consider Manhattan Rural and remote, but at the end of the day I’m not sure how much that really affects kids’ impressions. I’m certain it’s important to some, but I don’t see that percentage being anything overwhelming. At the end of the day kids just want a chance to move onto the NFL, so going D1 (with a huge preference being on an BCS AQ school) institution is all you need.
You can combat that by being a fad. See also Boise State.

I don’t think it matters as much once you get a kid to come on an official visit, because then you can sell all the things that make Manhattan and KSU great, but it definitely is a hurdle in getting the kids to come for that visit.

Let me respond with bullet points...
1) It’s more than a press box renovation. The scope has changed. We should hear something soon. It’s gonna be awesome from what I hear. And, no, I don’t expect to compete with Texas, Oklahoma, etc. That’s not who we compete with. We will compete with Texas Tech, TCU, Iowa State, KU, etc. Which leads me to my second point…
2) Your definition of success depends on your standards. I would consider 7-9 wins every year with bowl games and an occasional run at a conference title as a tremendous level of sustained success. What Snyder did should not be the standard. It’s an exception. What we should look for is a consistent level of good with occasional very good/great. Anything more is an unreasonable expectation.
3) Anyone that isn’t stupid can recruit at Kansas State. The blueprint has been laid out over twenty years under Bill Snyder. Grab a core of 15 prep kids, roll over about 5 grayshirts, and fill in with 5-8 JUCO kids (more than five if there are some countbacks). If you’re not a moron, you can field a bowl level team year in and year out with that strategy.
4) Well, no, we’re not a desirable entity for TV networks and the BCS, per se. Only about ten teams really are. However, the kind of coach we need to target shouldn’t care about that. He should be a guy that obviously has talent but needs a nice, quiet environment where he will do very well in an environment of security. Great examples are Rich Rodriguez, Mike Leach, and before he got involved with John Blake, Butch Davis.

If Martin thinks he is being pushed out, you can pretty much figure he will say something.
At this point in time, the result would not be good for the AD as Coach Martin is popular with the fan base.
And I think Currie knows this and will cultivate HCFM and his staff.

I think Martin is safe
I think if Martin were to screw up (I don’t think he would in the first place) and go out do to player mistreatment (I don’t think he will) we would have already seen some warning signs (outside of just the games).
I think that posturing over the Miami job last year was kind of a "Cold War" between them.
I don’t have specifics other than the fact that Frank is a pretty passionate guy, and I think Currie is a bottom-line guy. I’ve been in the professional world long enough to know that those kinds of guys don’t always mesh well together.

My only concern about Schulz is turning K-State into a research university while not maintaining UG teaching excellence.
Historically K-State has had excellent UG teaching in science and engineering.
If we hire a bunch of folks who only want to do research and not teach, then we end up with graduate assistants teaching and are like every other research university.

While I share your concerns...
There needs to be a major shift in how Kansas State is viewed nationally, and that comes with research.
A balance must be struck, but we absolutely can not go with the previous plan because that got us nowhere in all of the rankings. And while we can disagree about the quality of education we received vs. what the rankings say we received, I think we can all agree that there is room for improvement, and Schulz’s 2025 plan will give our diplomas greater value over time.

Some top programs will not change
i.e. the College of Ed and College of Human Ecology. Those are nationally recognized top programs that don’t show up in those “rankings” but are nonetheless significant.
As long as K-State (and Shultz) remembers its roots (Ag, Enigineering, Ed, and H.E.) then we should be just fine, and should not have to worry about our beloved Alma Mater changing for the worse

I understand their importance in perception and in bragging rights, but not at the risk of atrophying the educational experience of the student. That is how schools – despite many of their lofty rankings – lose their way.

I voiced that myself to Schulz a month ago when he came to Manhattan (Big Apple). Apparently so have many other alums. But from my talk I believe he does not want to forgo the latter (tremendous – nay, superior – undergraduate education) in favor of the former (research).
He doesn't.
He mentioned this when he was speaking to the Facilities Department in this year’s talk of the 2025 plan.
He understands that we are a Land Grant University (the first one, in fact), and realizes THAT is who we are and what we need to be, but as mentioned previously, the research element is also very important to future growth.

That a lot of the “research” that will get us into the rankings will be in conjunction with NBAF and the BRI (ABADRU). We will be targeting big name researchers, but not pushing out the teaching professors.

You seem to be plugged into this, Black, but I’m admittedly very blurry on the entire NBAF-KSU picture. My basic understanding is that we should get some nice tie-ins on the research side of things, but that a flood of research dollars flowing into our university may perhaps be expecting too much. Truth/Rumor/Fiction?

With 12 (I think they’re at 15 now) ABADRU employees working in the BRI for 6-9 months of that year our federal research dollars damn near doubled. I’ll be interested to see what the final total for 2011 is with 14/15 of them working in there for 12 full months. These are Federal employees that receive zero salary from KSU, but have KSU grad students (and some undergrad) assisting their research so we get credit (partial? that I’m not sure of) for the research being done. The money doesn’t actually go to KSU, we just get credit for it towards these rankings because we were involved in the research.
That should be the true bellwether. If you figure 12 researchers for part of the year “doubled our dollars” (through the same kind of partnerships NBAF will have with the University) what will 450-500 researchers do for our research bottom line?

But don’t forget, that GA get’s their name on the research. A KSU GA. Some of the researchers will teach one 3 hour class a year which makes it a KSU professor’s name on the research. That’s a big deal when building a reputation among peers and the AAU.
The only difference between the work being done this way and if KSU actually got the money is a little for the KSU profs salary and a little for a grant admins salary. We’re actually net ahead by doing it this way.
It’s the private dollars that we really want/need. They fund entire positions, no administrative costs and everyone has their fingers crossed for a commercialized product that rains gold upon the university and the private supporter. Seriously, one 1 billion dollar idea could mean as much as 200 million for KSU in licensing. One successful drug. That’s it.

The flu shot at best will only prevent two stains of the flu, and if the wrong one is chosen for that year then the drug companies play catch up trying to get enough out there. That’s why you hear about flu shot shortages. Even when you have the right one, its only about 72% effective.
This drug, in 2 Phase 2 trials has shown two things. If taken prior to the flu season and throughout, it’s 97% and 98% percent effective to preventing any type of flu. When taken after contracting the flu, it halts the symptoms and shortens duration. Tamaflu only shortens duration by a day or two in about 50% of people, this works for darn near everyone and you’ll start to feel better in about 24 hours.

One of the studies I saw said that 33% of the people with the flu shot caught the flu.
33% of the people that did not get the flu shot also caught the flu.

Got the money from the state, got the money from the Fed.
A portion of the money ($40MM) is being held back (again) because the delegation from Long Island is puffing its chest. It will be released (again) upon yet another site study. And people wonder why the cost keeps going up.
I’m not going to get into it all here, but we got enough to keep moving forward. If we don’t get the $40MM by November of 2012 we could have a delay. Most predictions are that we’ll get the money Wednesday after the elections.

And here is where I get to educate all of the BOTC males
Lactation rooms are necessarily used for active feeding of a baby. In fact, the main purpose of the rooms being created here on campus are for mothers who have gone back to work, but are still breastfeeding. As you may, or may not know, the mother continues to produce milk even when not in the baby’s presence, and this milk needs to be “expressed” to relieve the pressure.
So, they bring their little pump with them, and twice a day go into one of these lactation rooms, and pumps the milk out (and saves it for later).
It is actually a legal requirement now to “provide suitable time and location (other than a restroom) for female (breastfeeding) employees to express milk”.
But agree, since 1862, I am aware of ONE instance where a breastfeeding mother complained about the lack of a place to be able to do this.

And as of yet, this is not a Code issue. The actual law is about as precise as what I mention up above. It is one sentence, and then gives no prescriptive criteria regarding what the space must consist of.

(men needing a room like this as well), but decided it could get very raunchy very quickly…so I refrained.
Adding wifi only get it there quicker.
I DO have to provide an electrical receptacle in all these spaces (for those hipster moms who have the fancy electric pumps). Glad I don’t have to make sure they are all wifi capable too!

That one actually makes sense though, as you COULD have a dad who needs to find a place to change his kid’s diaper.
And actually, the entity requiring these lactation rooms is the US Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division.
The requirement just says that you have to provide a reasonable amount of breaktime for this purpose, and a location other than a restroom to do it. It would honestly be a lot easier if it actually was written into a building code somewhere on how many you need and what all has to go in them.
The problem I am facing right now is that I don’t very well want to go “eminent domain” on departments and take someone’s private office to make one of these rooms, considering it might go unused for 5 years. That’s pretty much where I’m at now though, we have found all of the “unassignable” space that will work for this purpose.

Well, considering
I lived in Goodnow for freshman and soph years, and then moved off campus (with my scooter), and all of my classes were in Seaton (for the most part), I never found myself “strolling by Call Hall” at all…ever.
And the tree tour is actually a guided tour (there are maps) of all of the different species of trees on campus. It was actually just revised very recently.

He was here so he would know what he is getting into, and he would have a few years to learn the Bill way. And then he would become inside the program.
And I think he develops secondary really well. This is what is needed against the high powered offenses in the big 12, so it would be a great benefit.
and Morris averaged better with his defense than cosh did this year. about 3 or 4 points per game better and about 50 yards a game better. I would also go out on a limb and say that the talent on the defnesive side is better than in 06 and I would expect even better numbers.
Just a thought tough, and a pipe dream.

but there is nothing really here calling him back—no family, no friends on staff, not his Alma Mater, only one year of experience here. He is a good coordinator, but I think he would do best by staying at the NFL level. Whereas I really think Jim Leavitt is best at the college level, and would jump at a chance to return now that his storm has calmed

I think Leavitt is happy in the NFL. He did his work at the collegiate level.
He doesn’t have to deal with parents, boosters, alumni, etc. He did a miracle job at USF, and they treated him like garbage so they could get someone ‘meh’ like Skip Holtz.
Leavitt is getting close to retirement age. If he can get about 5-7 good years drawing an NFL salary, I think he’ll probably hang it up.

He’s always waffling on retirement, but the man will probably coach into his late 70’s, early 80’s because football is his hobby and work is his addiction.

You could tell (besides him saying so) that he didn’t really want to retire the first time. And he looked uncomfortable not coaching those three years, even though it was rejuvenating for him.
He needed those three years to re-evaluate. The recent articles show he learned what went wrong.

Pro D (or O) in college
is not always a good idea.
The pro ranks are essentially the top 10% of college players. Unless you have the top guys for each position, it can get ugly if you implement a pro D or O. Don’t believe look what happened to Charlie Weis at Notre Dame.

You can't run the 3-4 in college. Period. You can't find the DTs to make it work.
You also can’t really run a really solid pro-style offense unless you can get yourself a QB that has NFL ability to make pro-style throws.
Standford had the most NFL looking offense I saw in college these past few years, but that’s because they had a kid with NFL talent, now, that could make it work.
Matt Barkley can make it work at USC because he’s NFL calibur, now.
Everyone else is going to do something goofy like Oregon, Okie State, what Urban Meyer will do at OSU, etc. because you can make it work with college kids. I mean, lord, Meyer made Tebow look like a golden God in college, and now he throws ducks to the hash marks on Sundays.

If I were a coach, I'd run a 4-3 and the veer.
You get a limited number of practices and hours with kids that probably didn’t learn much in high school. Keep it simple, increase repetition, and make sure you make their jobs simple and based on as much muscle memory as possible.
Win 8-9 games on average at 90% of the schools and you’ll make millions and they’ll name a building or stadium after you.

In the Big 12, I would used a modified base 4-2-5
where you use a large safety, or fast LB as the nickle. Its basically what Keoning ran, and its good when you lack overall speed in the LB corps.
And I have always been partial to the Single-Wing and I Form in college. Especially when you can get big Kansas kids like Braden Wilson at fullback
You can always find a QB that can run. You can't always find one that can throw.
And you can make it work and get creative if they can’t throw.
But you can’t take a kid like Jordan Webb and make him a runner.

its the offense Snyder used with Bishop, Beasly, and Roberson.
And the knock on I-Form is you need big O-linemen and a bruising RB. Thats why the Nub’s, USC, OU, etc. were good at it.

I was thinking the same thing yesterday
Not necessarily that I’m ‘meh’ about the game but more that I’m amped up for the Cotton Bowl and the game has more or less come out of nowhere. The past few years, I’ve spent day(s) at work wasting time thinking about and preparing for this game. This year, its like, “Oh, its hear.”
I was looking at an article (ok it was a wikipedia page) about Tyler Lockett the other day
And it said that he needs to just appear in one more game to qualify to be the NCAA leader in KR average for this season, it would sure be nice if Sean could just get him in the end zone for one kickoff return, he doesn’t even have to return it.

I’m expecting a loss for the Cats, but I’m expecting them to perform better than they did last year.
0-3 in the next three games means the Cats will likely struggle getting to the NCAA tournament
1-2 means they’ll probably make the tournament, but it will be rough and they have little shot at a conference title
2-1 means they’re right in the thick of things in the league
3-0 means they’re the new favorite to win the league, and they would be VERY highly ranked.
It’s going to be a fun week!

I like our chances against ku better than I do against Baylor but I’m just worried they will come around sooner or later.

Baylor is still a pretty soft team, Pierre Jackson’s best efforts aside. And still more than a little dumb. I think we beat them up on our court and grind out a win.
@lawrence … I just hope we don’t pee down our leg in the first five minutes. At this point, we shouldn’t. It’s time to be past all that. And this ku team just isn’t that good. I heard a stat this morning that blew my mind … ku bench points against North Dakota last Saturday? SIX. All from Connor Teahan. The ku bench is horrifying. Look, I still think we’re the underdog … but let’s f*ing do this.
Missourah … After watching them against ODU, I really think their weaknesses are probably bigger than I had thought before. They really will struggle against teams that are long, athletic, and deep on the inside … especially ones like KSU that will really commit to rebounding. As long as KSU doesn’t turn it over in the backcourt like crazy, I think we will take that one.
I’m tacitly predicting a 2-1 start, but I think the combo of wins/losses could go any which way. And we could easily go 1-2 as well.

but I think I am more worried about OU in Norman the game after Baylor than I am KU, MU, or BU. Why??? Because we are dealing with “known” commodities in the other three. They are the teams we KNOW we have to play our A+ game against if we want to win.
I think about OU kind of how I’m guessing most non KSU people thought about us several years ago (and maybe still today), in that, “yeah, they are winning, but I’m not sure if they are for real” kind of way.
I am even more nervous about that game if we go 3-0 to start conference play, than if we start 0-3.

Plus, when I was a child my mom was a stylist, so she cut our hair. It wasn’t till I was in college that I finally paid for a haircut. It got to the point that it was almost like a chore that I had to endure.
Then I tried the SpertsClips in Lawrence (I hate having to go into that wasteland so much, but we live right next to it) and the experience became actually enjoyable (especially when I splurge and get the massage.
The stylists in Lawrence so far have all been nice visual complements to the experience, so I don’t know what problem the one in Manhattan seems to have.

My family used to go to the same place all at the same time, and she would cut all 4 of us and get it over with. Then I switched to the guy who pierced my ears when I was in college. Migrated to a Great Clips when I was in Atlanta, but never settled on a particular stylist.
I think if I start going to Sport Clips on the regular, I am going to pick one and stick with her to build some sort of relationship (you know, so I can get the same cut every time).

I have NEVER been given a card from someone at Great Clips
in Manhattan or Atlanta.
I think I DID get a card from the girl at Sport Clips though. Didn’t get a “come-back-within-30-days-for-a-free-neck-trim” though. I would always use those, because the damn neck hair is usually what dictates when I go in for my next haircut.

And I’ll be the first to say the PAC-12 had a down year, but they got screwed in bowl matchups. UCLA in a bowl? 6-6 Arizona State playing Boise? 6-6 Washington playing a 9-win Baylor squad (regardless of how good that game actually turned out)? An overtime loss by Stanford to an OSU team that could have played for the title?
Conference bowl records are all about matchups, and even though this time the 2-5 record is relatively indicative of how mediocre the PAC-12 was this year, that isn’t always the case.

Partly as a product of great quality depth within the conference and partly because of Okie State and KSU getting screwed, in either case bumping all the bowl eligible schools down a rung each in the bowl pecking order.

Kadeem Green is leaving Mizzou. He’s the only newcomer for Mizzou that has played meaningful minutes, and it leaves the Tigers with an even shallower frontcourt.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma State has lost third-leading scorer J.P. Olukemi for the season with an ACL tear.
If OSU had any dance hopes left (and they probably didn't) ...

You should be happy for Michigan and VT being in that bowl, it points out very bluntly that the BCS has nothing to do with anything other than ticket sales for any game other than the 1 v 2 game. As the 1 v 2 game is fairly meaningless this year, the BCS is pretty much worthless.
Michigan from one report had sold 85% of its tickets. This leaves Michigan with about 2,625 tickets left. Since the bowls do not make schools buy the cheaper tickets, you can figure those are at least $100 per ticket which means Michigan has to hand the Sugar Bowl $262,500 for the privilege of playing in the BCS bowl.
VT meanwhile has reportedly sold about 145000 tickets which surprise, surprise is about 85% of its tickets allotment. According to a Washington Post story VT has actually only sold about 10,500 tickets with 4,000 tickets being donated by VT and the ACC to military members in the NOLA area. As such VT only sold about 60% of its tickets and donated about 23% of its tickets. Again using the rough figure of $100 a ticket, VT/ACC is donating $400,000 tickets it could not sell and VT has to pay the Bowl $250,000+ to play in the Sugar Bowl.
So if you believe in karma, be glad for VT and Michigan going to the Sugar Bowl. I am especially glad as it points out very vividly that the bowl system has nothing to do with an NCAA championship and everything to do with the bowls making money. Sooner or later someone in charge, AD’s and Presidents this means you, is going to realize that a bunch of money is being left on the table and a 11 team play-off (or some other variety) will make much more money for the schools.
As for me I’m excited about the Cats playing in the Cotton Bowl and hope it is another great game from the 2011 K-State Football Team …. I like this team and will enjoy rooting cheering for them on Friday.

even though I was hoping to see K-State in the Sugar Bowl, and personally am tired by the BCS conspiracy against KSU (face it: 6 times in the top-10 of the BCS standings and not ONE BCS at-large invite???), I pretty much agree with you across the board here, Anon.
By the way, are you heading down to Dallas for the game? Who all from BOTC is going? I fly out Thursday, but won’t arrive in time for that day’s pep rally. Hoping to run into some people during the tailgating hours on Friday before the game, though.
Unfortunately no.
I’m still in conserve money mode otherwise I’d be going to the game in AFH (can’t believe tickets are available) and the Cotton Bowl.

I won’t be tuning in likely tonight. Neither team does anything for me. I haven’t been a huge “vote with your remote” guy, as I’ve tuned in for the majority of big12 bowls. I believe A&M is the only one I didn’t at least catch a snippet of, but that had more to do with me being at my in-laws than anything. Oh and I don’t have cable so I’ve been contributing to ESPN’s bowl ratings via bandwidth/server slowdown on ESPN3.com

After watching the movie,
I read about Wikipedia entry on the author of the books. I was not surprised about his views in life, nor events that had happened in his life.

Of course, I haven't read the books either, so they could be bad.
And neither have I watched the film.
Of course, just because a film is bad doesn’t mean that the book will be good, either.
For instance, Twilight, which I have heard are abysmal movies (I have managed thus far to avoid being subjected to them) are also actually not very good books.
Unfortunately, my appetite for reading verges on addiction, so I was able to plow my way through all four books. But I wouldn’t recommend them to anybody, even as a punishment.

Trying not to spoil movie or book for anyone, but I think there are better uses of time.
I understand the movie cost issue, which is why I typically avoid movies plus the sound usually is not that good IMHO.

If you like Science Fiction,
the Change Series by S. M. Stirling is interesting reading. If you don’t mind historical fiction then try Marcus Didius Falco series by LIndsey Davis. Decent Mysteries set in Rome. Also just stop by the Dusty Bookshelf and grab a couple or three of the Dover Thrift editions, most of those are classics which might be readable.
If you are wanting movies, work your way through the Cary Grant movies some great movies in his career. If you want a thriller then go with Alfred Hitchcock and if that doesn’t work watch Bullit.

Daniel Woodrell is a great writer
His latest book “The Outlaw Album” is a collection of short stories that has received a lot of critical acclaim. Just came out a month or two ago.
He also wrote “Woe to Live On” (being re-released this February as “Ride With the Devil”), which was made into a quite good movie starring Tobey McGuire (called “Ride With the Devil”, thus the re-issue of the book with the new name). Its about a Missouri youth of German-American descent who joins the Secessionist bushwackers against the Unionist Jayhawkers and Redlegs during the Civil War. Really excellent (can’t speak for the book since its been out of print for years – but am excited to read it once re-issued).

Martin has specifically referenced Lost as something he is not going to imitate.
He was a fan and was also very upset about the ending. He claims to have his ending already decided, it is just getting there that is the tricky part.

Yo, Chris, you read the new TWOW sample chapter on GRRM's site yet?
It was pretty promising. I just hope he doesn’t take another six years this time.
I am cautiously optimistic (setting myself up for disappointment, I know)
Supposedly this book took so long because he was having a bunch of trouble with “Kong”, a particularly sticky plot problem.
And supposedly this issue has been resolved.
And, allegedly (by George Martin), the next book is already 100 manuscript pages in (though this was true the last time).
But I think that the biggest mover is the TV series. If that thing stays alive then it is going to rapidly catch up to the books, and he needs to stay ahead of that curve.
As for the new sample, I have not yet read it, but you can count on the fact that I will finish it sometime today.

Kong was the book itself.
The particular plot problem was the “Meerenese knot,” which he finally sliced through by promoting a certain character with the initials B.S. to POV status. You know, the Kingbreaker.
Sorry for the super-nerd correction, but I followed the whole process in-depth for six years. It’s emblazoned on my soul.
Er, yeah, was confusing my allegories there.
I should have gotten that correct, epic nerd-fail on my part.
I used the term “supposedly” because, as has happened before, I would not be surprised if Martin decided to do something completely different, and therefore nullifying his solution, or creating a whole new problem to deal with.
I thought that Theon was a great chapter (and I think he was my favorite storyline from the newest book), but was a little disappointed that he is still holding out key information. Oh well, I can only assume Martin knows what he is doing.

Thrones
I picked up the Game of Thrones series after seeing an episode on HBO. Almost finished with the first. Much more entertaining books than the “Girl” series. The Dragon Tattoo I found especially hard to get through, though the second and third books are better as the girl gets progressively freakier. I’m not sure you can really compare the two, though. One is fantasy; the other is European financial journalist intrigue.
I also liked the Hunger Games series. I read those three books in less than a week. Ah, the good old days, when I had time to read.

And I know it fantasy, but it is easy to imagine where the Thrones took place geographically. I once described it as the made up version of where the legends of the dark ages (Arthor, Lancelot, Merlin, Dragons, etc.) came from. My buddy read the first book and got the analogy. I think that is pretty spot on.
The only difference is that Martin is telling those tales with a realist twist. Instead of creating mythical archetypes, he is taking those archetypes and turning them into believable characters with many good and bad traits.
Even looking at the maps, Westeros is basically England (and culturally all of Western Europe) while Essos is Eurasia (complete with once dominant world power (Rome/Targaryans) that is now in ruins and an even older civilization that resented the newer one (Greece/Ghis).

Probably has elements of both.
He doesn’t have any direct parallels. He mixes and matches and borrows from different places, and mashes them together in interesting ways.
Like Volantis, which is equal parts Bombay, New Orleans and Florence/Milan/Naples.
Definitely.
That’s what makes it so “new” and “original” in feel.
But there are definitely some strong parallels that are just a tad bit more than mere culture mashing.
Given your obvious in-depth knowledge, I’m sure I don’t even need to mention the real life war that this bears the strangest resemblance too. (and it really is remarkable how many events are almost drawn directly from that period when you look into it)

I’m really, really lazy about reading it. I read the other four in a few months while I was flying all over the place. But now that I’m flying a lot less, I’ve been reading a lot less fiction.
I also tend to read a lot less during football season. I have no idea why.

I know someone brought this up...
but I got curious as to how many BCS opportunities we actually could have been selected to participate. The answer is 6. The only one we actually were allowed to play in was ’03 Fiesta when we beat OU and got the auto bid. So the BCS has seen fit to screw KSU five times out of an at large spot. The most egregious being ’98 and ’99 when we finished #3 and #6 respectively. We were #9 in ’00, #8 in ’02, AQ in ’03 over OU, and of course #8 in ’11. So excluding the number 9 ranking which I can forgive by my count the BCS owes us around 8 million in participation fees that they saw fit to give to other schools. I would be happy with 6 million at this point.
So why do I bring this up? I want the Cotton Bowl to join the BCS or whatever it morphs into. 5 bowls with a +1 MNC game. The Cotton Bowl, as it has this year, has been very good to K-State. Honestly, they have the best facilities now being located in Cowboys Stadium and should become a part of the entire BCS apparati.

Indy never had a bowl so it might be a better choice.
But if a play off happens I say change the bowl rules so that bowls can not force schools to purchase tickets and hotel rooms in order to participate in bowl. That way if the Rose Bowl wants to continue with B1G vs P12 they can but it would be a meaningless game since the league champions would be in a playoff game.
Now that I think about it, the NCAA should change the rules and say a school can not participate in any contest requiring purchase of tickets or rooms by an Athletic Department or School. I’ll bet the bowl go away fairly quickly after that.

Just for the grins.
Sugar Bowl announced attendance 68k+ out of 72k for 97% capacity.
This is ticket sales though which includes the tickets the schools have to purchase.
One commentator said the facility was only 1/2 full.

The more I read about it and see the videos, the Cotton Bowl is a first class experience.
It also doesn’t hurt that they’ve run promos during every NFL game broadcasted on Fox in the past month.
I mean they’re really dressing it up to the nines. Considering that the Sugar Bowl essentially admitted they’re considering this year’s game a hassle in lieu of the BCS title game, it’s probably better for everyone involved that we went to the Cotton.
However, it would have been nice to beat the crap out of a Big Ten team.

So let me reverse a scenario
Typical fall, KSU whips KU in football. You brag about it at the water cooler the next day. KU fan responds, “I don’t really care, because it’s basketball season, Late Night is tonight”
