That OU loss is starting to look worse and worse
But at least there is a chance for retribution this year.

I have a bad feeling this is going to be a repeat of CU last year
Cats were good against everyone else last year in conference, but CU had their number.

Gotta admit...
that was a nice “D” by OU.
"Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please." Mark Twain
Our offense
is either a turnover or a contested shot with no time left on the shot clock. Better passing guys! Get it inside.
Too much dribbling. No passing.
Offense bogs down with Will at point.

Trying to figure out how this OU team sucks against everyone else.
Because they really are bringing a good effort tonight. Again.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Jan 28, 2012 6:54 PM CST reply actions
As someone said earlier
OU is this year’s version of CU
Possibly...
But I really didn’t like the effort in the first half…
but it's our lack of effort and D causing it
there is nothing special they are doing.
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
Idk...
I think Steven Pledger having 18 points might have something to do with it…
If you can't guard him then deny him the ball
we got burnt on D too many times and he is making shots but not well contested shots
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
Totally different teams, but still a matchup problem.
We can’t match up with Pledger. OU has enough horses to rebound with us when they bring the effort.
If Will is going to continue to play like this, we are fucked.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Jan 28, 2012 6:58 PM CST up reply actions
This game does not have a good vibe to it right now
hopefully something changes after halftime
Our offense was pathetic. No clue what we were doing against the zone, no one cutting hard.
Our defense wasn’t necessarily the problem, it was our listless attitude on the offensive end.
Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.
Twitter - @BigE_29er
Dammutt!
This really is a must win game if we want to compete for 4th in conference, because after today I have doubts about our ability to go to Ames and win.
I have serious doubts about getting the "W" in Ames
after seeing our lack of effort in the first half here…
Angel needs to stay out of foul trouble
when he left the offense looked dumbfounded. Really disappointed that Rod didn’t get more touches.
Rod touched it plenty.

Angel creating offense is going to win this game for us, or we're probably not getting it done.
It would help if Will didn’t completely, utterly suck tonight.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Jan 28, 2012 7:04 PM CST up reply actions
100 percent agree
Angel needs to play smart. As for Will, are we sure he doesn’t have a twin?
Yes, we're not getting the zone out of position.
Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.
Twitter - @BigE_29er
This team is just too young to play consistently
up one week and down the next. It wouldn’t surprise me to lose this and win in Ames with a great effort. When you throw the ball away and give up a 3 to end the half you don’t win very often.
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
Halftime Grades:
Angel: B. needs to stay out of foul trouble.
Will: D. Getting owned on both ends.
Rod: B. Find the openings more often.
GIP: ? Where did he go?
Jamar: C+. Up and down so far.
Tay: D. Re: Will Spradling.
JO: B+. He’s trying, just need to be a better presence on D.
Vic: B. doing what’s asked of him, again.
Paradox: C. Not very assertive.
Diaz: C.

by rjd27 on Jan 28, 2012 7:15 PM CST via mobile reply actions
To be fair
Right now, I don’t see much effort.
This goes beyond X's and O's, skills, abilities, or anything physical.
I’m seriously questioning this team’s heart right now. No passion. No conviction. No fire. There isn’t a Wildcat on the floor that looks like they want to play basketball today.
Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.
Twitter - @BigE_29er
The same shit we saw when they pissed the Baylor game away twice, and then get smoked at OU
It’s a damned good thing the Cats don’t have to play Kruger every game, otherwise Martin should be fired.

I haven't watched you guys enough this year but McGruder's clearly your best player.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Nope, not even close
Rod’s a terrific second fiddle, and a darned good offensive player, but he doesn’t have the personality to be the leader.

We zombie'd our way through the first 22 minutes, we have no reliable outside shooting, we're not playing offense with any conviction, we can't get back on defense quickly enough to match up...

This is the 4th time in the last 8 games the Cats were not prepared to win
They completely crapped themselves at KU, played great against MU, pissed away the game (3 times) against Baylor, got crushed at a crappy Oklahoma team, barely beat UT because of awful defense, won ugly at OSU, and then crushed one of the worst big boy teams in the country, then they had no answer for a two man team at home.
Martin’s going to blame his players again, and I’ve had enough of his excuses. I want him to man up and take the blame himself.

It is not the coaches that are causing the issues.
There is an issue with execution with the team this year.
Earlier the team was executing and winning, now they are sloppy and doing things they shouldn’t. The coaches can try to correct this but ultimately the players have to take responsibility to do better.
Why do you think VO is playing, because he is doing something right that others are not doing.

Timid
Are our guys so timid that they’re scared they’re going to get yanked if they make a mistake? Or get yelled at and sit out rest of the half like Gip? I’m wondering if that has a little to do with our play and why we can’t execute. Players make mistakes, but sometimes you gotta let em play.

He can’t be any worse than what we’ve seen combined out of Angel and Will, sadly. I’m wonder if he’s still hurt.

Spradling is one of our only two point guards ...
So he has to play because only Angel and him can handle the position for extended periods. (I’m being gentle to Will’s tools as a PG here)
We really just need Will to snap out of it. McGruder has the hook up from earlier this year … way past time for the slumpbuster. And if it’s Will’s first, then so be it.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Jan 28, 2012 8:48 PM CST up reply actions
Final thought...
This is still a young team that’s growing. I don’t have a problem with Frank pulling Gipson (who is a liability defensively), or not playing Shane in an evening where we desperately needed scoring from the guard position, which he can’t really do all that well.
This game came down to two things, IMO: defense on Pledger and point guard play. And PG play was the biggest problem.
Look, we lost to Baylor because we didn’t have anyone who could cover Jackson, and we lost to OU twice because we don’t have anyone from the guard position to cover Pledger. Despite my ranting tonight, I don’t really have a problem with Will, but the bottom line is if he isn’t hitting shots, he’s worth next to nothing on the floor. He’s not fast, he’s an average passer, he’s an average ball handler, and he gets burned time and again by faster players because he doesn’t move very well, laterally. It’s absolutely essential that Rodriguez continues to improve, but it’s going to take a year or so before he becomes the kind of guy you can count on every night.
The positive thing about tonight is that we know the groove that Frank wants to go with, and that’s with Rod at the point and Will at the two. If Will is hitting shots, and Angel is not running around like a hyped up terrier on meth, they have a lot of potential. Especially if you have a rock like McGruder on the wing scoring and playing solid defense. However, if Angel has to sit for long stretches due to foul trouble, and Will isn’t hitting ANYTHING, we’re not going to win many games, at home or away, because we don’t have much behind them. I love Irving for what he brings off of the bench. However, he’s not the kind of guy that should be playing 25 minutes. He should be playing 15 minutes, like Rodriguez did tonight.
The 08-09 season, after Beasley left, was tough because we had an entire team of guys who weren’t “the guy”. Now, in 11-12, after Pullen left, we have a bunch of guys who aren’t “the guy”, and we’re adjusting to that. It’s rough. It’s ugly. However, and I hope to God this happens, we right the ship, finish 11-7 in the conference, and we go dancing in our rebuilding year.
Next season, should we not run off half of the team again, I think we have an opportunity to be very solid in 12-13 with Rodriguez, Spradling, and Irving finding the right mix. Having four gigantic trees we can march out there in JO, Diaz, Upshaw, and Lemon Chex won’t hurt either. However, in the meantime, we’ve got a true freshman, a sophomore that looks like he’s still waiting to get hair under his armpits, and a consummate role player trying to lead the back court of a team in a gauntlet of a conference, and honestly, that’s not going to win you a lot of games unless the players I mentioned were recruited by John Calipari.
There, I needed to write all of that out. I feel better now.

Yeah, that nails it.
For all the thousand things that plague this team (like every other team with limited firepower and no room for error in execution) … problem #1 is Will missing nearly every single shot he takes. And then throwing it to the other team because his shooting is driving him insane.
If/when Will starts shooting it just ok again, it’s going to cover up a motherfucking lot of issues.
The team tried to fool us through the non-con … but it’s officially a rebuilding year. And I just hope we can grind to a dance invite as well. The numbers are there for us, if we can just win 11. Maybe even 10, if they are the right 10. Especially this year, because college basketball is gawdawful this year.

Don't take too much from this game ...
As it’s been presented places in the thread above, OU is a bad, bad matchup for us because we have nobody on the roster at the 1-2 spots that can guard Pledger. And then they have enough athletes up front to hang with us on the boards.
I still expect to get 2 from a&m (they don’t have any matchup issues for us). I expect to get the other game from Tech. I expect to beat ISU and OSU at home. That’s 9 wins.
I don’t expect to win @MU or @Baylor, though I would not count out @Baylor because their mojo is almost entirely gone now.
We will fight ku down to the end. Don’t know how that turns out.
I think we have a shot @ISU because there is the possibility of totally dominating them on the boards.
We have a shot @Texas because Texas is a psycho team full of freshmen and limited players.
imo, we are in limbo between 10 and 11 wins.

I'm rooting for you guys but I think your vision is a little optimisitc.
ISU just ate our lunch on the glass. Maybe your energy will be better and that won’t be a problem for you but they’ve done it to us, so totally dominating them on the boards might be a possibility but it’s a small one.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

I hate agreeing with you, but I do.
The schizophrenic way that this team is playing (which, in my opinion, is caused by the schizophrenic way it is coached) means that no win is guaranteed, and any game (except TTU at home) could be a potential loss. And what ISU did to your Beakers today scares me a LOT.

Look, let's not talk about ISU like they're indestructible just because they beat ku at home.
Frankly, if you expected ku to win @ISU, you probably need to re-evaluate your expectations. ISU is a pretty talented team that was digging their trench around that game. The point spread was ludicrous for anyone paying attention.
Now … the KSU/ISU game is a classic letdown situation for ISU and they’ll have a desperate KSU team on their hands that matches up pretty well. Does that mean a KSU win? No. Does it mean that KSU has a decent shot? Hell yes.
ISU is the same team that should have lost to OSU at home about a week and a half ago.

We played bad and still could have pulled out the W. They're far from indestructible.
I was just commenting on the “dominating them on the boards” part. Either way, good luck and I hope you guys beat them.

We're going to win at least one game we're not supposed to win, and lose one we're not supposed to lose.
This team will probably go to Ames and win, and they’ll probably beat Baylor (or something) in Waco.
Then we’ll probably lose at home to Oklahoma State or something.
Here’s the thing. Per the RPI, we have zero bad losses. Zero. We have good wins via the RPI and a big win over MU.
The bubble teams this year are truly horrific. We can’t go 8-10, 9-9 (if it’s the right nine) can probably do the job. If we get ten, we’re probably in as a low at large because the field is pathetic.
Beat Kansas at home, and it erases both losses to OU. Period.

On the bubble at this point
The team can play with any team in the country when they are on their game. But the games against OU, are the worst games we’ve played and quite a few teams would beat us very easily.
Which is the real team, don’t know. This is a fun group of guys to watch, but as Pan points out they are young.

And if Frank keeps fiddle-farting with guys' psyches,
by benching them for every mistake they make, or for just pissing him off, we may end up on the wrong side of the bubble.

It isn't the coaching.
You can blame the coach or coaches all you want but as BigE notes in his post game write up the players aren’t executing. And this isn’t the first game that it has happened.
One of the more revealing interviews with Coach Martin where he said one player was supposed to throw the ball in bounds and that player did not do it. Despite being immediately after a time out. If the player(s) do not do what they are coached to do during game situations, it is not the fault of the coaches.
I find it funny that everyone loves Coach Martin when we beat Missouri by double digits but all of a sudden he stinks when the team starts having problems. Either he can coach or he can’t.

I don't think he "stinks."
I think he’s an immature coach, who has strong and weak points, but whose immaturity causes him to do things which are counterproductive to the goals he has for his teams.

This I agree with
and I keep saying it. Frank is a good coach, but immature. Once he gets over that, he can become a great coach
I just got to think that he knew that we were going to be in for a tough game at the beginning of the week
And if there was one thing that I took away from the coaches I that I have interacted with through my life it is that confidence is extremely important, you don’t say at the beginning of the week that we need a full house against a team that is on the wrong side of the bubble. And I just have to think that if we had a coach like Bill Self (just a good coach who popped in to my head not saying we should necessarily Bill Self and fire Frank) who doesn’t set his team up to lose a game just to prove a point, even though that may not have been what he did this game he did it in the first game and did 2 things in doing so, 1 he gave OU confidence, 2 he took away a valuable chance to gain experience from some crucial players

I think it's about a 55% chance the Cats make the tourney
But they must not lose again at home, and that includes against KU.

Honestly I think to be safe we can only lose 2 more games and that is at Baylor and at Missouri if we lose any more than all bets are off
If we go XX-7, we're getting something like a 5-seed.
Honestly, we could very well go 9-9 (with a home win over ku) and still get in this year with our non-con and this terrible bubble taking shape. 10-8 puts in a good spot. 11-7 is a lock.
Our situation is not bad. It’s just tough to see the good right now.

OU Loss Hurts
I’ve been extremely hard on Frank this year, however, I’m beginning to think much of the blame goes to our players. Lack of effort on the players part and a very low basketball IQ by the whole team. Angel did some great things offensively, however, erased all of them with his bad passes and dumb fouls. Offensively I’ve never seen a team move the ball slower than we did tonight. We got beat by a team with lesser talent and a whole lot more desire to win.
I'm wondering if a visit from the football team captains wouldn't go a long way.
If nothing else it would be a huge bonding moment that the football team cares about the Bball team. Compare that to the KU teams brawling.
Our football team figured out how to win through sheer will. Yes you can learn this. We call it heart, but in reality it’s sports psychology.
In basketball you can’t think, you just do. When you think about everything or pause for a moment and wonder is you’re going to get yanked if you screw this pass or whatever up, you’re a step behind and you are going to screw up. Repetition takes the thinking out of it, that’s on the coaches. Doing what the coaches say, that’s on the players.

By the way, credit to McGruder for a gutty game ...
He didn’t come up big on rebounds, but he scored a lot of well-earned points when nobody else was. Nearly brought us back on his own in the second half up to the 10-minute mark. And he locked up Pledger (except for broken-court points) when we abandoned the idea that any of our guards had a chance.
