K-State Basketball

The big news today is bad news as K-State center Jordan Henriquez has been suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team." Let's hope whatever it is gets straightened out quickly. K-State is entering a stretch of winnable games, but is a much better team with JO playing.

Rodney McGruder is starting to flourish in his role as K-State's primary scorer. He's scored 30 or more points in both his last two home games.

Peter loves covering basketball, and it shows. Check out his recap of K-State's win over Texas, as well as his excellent Texas Basketball Report, with discussion of the best home-court advantages in the country (hint: one located just a few feet south of Bill Snyder Family Stadium).

K-State Football

Clemson has hired Brent Venables as its new defensive coordinator, so K-State will be looking elsewhere, assuming it ever was considering Venables.

Big 12 Football

Charlie Weis dismissed quarterback Brock Berglund from his roster, but KU won't release Berglund from his scholarship.

JO's suspension sounds like a theme running

I’m sorry but I am beginning to lose confidence in Martin. If he said “f off,” then make him run an extra suicide but don’t suspend him. I think Martin is too much of a marine and not enough of a teacher. I can only imagine how crazy his math classrooms were!

We still don't know the actual reason he was suspended

Nor, I doubt, will we ever.
I’m going to say that I believe that if Frank felt the need to suspend JO it was for something more than just a couple bad practices or back-talk. Frank is immature, not insane.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 8:21 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree if this silliness is the reason for the suspension.

As I said in the fan-post about it -

I REALLY hope this is true – I think it’s awesome for a few reasons

1. JO, who’s always struck us as a bit of sissy, finally has the beans to fight back against a guy who sometimes comes off as a bully.

2. Martin finally has someone stand up to him, and I don’t think that’s ever a bad thing.

3. This is the kind of crap that can be taken care of with some self-reflection, a 10 minute meeting, and a pair of good practices.

4. Hopefully JO won’t get pushed around any more.

5. Martin might learn to do more coaching and less screaming.

6. It’s going to be a very funny story for this team.

If this is true, this isn’t the kind of stuff that will expel a solid contributor from the team, and it can be dealt with quickly. Perfect. I’d be much more worried if JO is dicking around in practice or not going to class.

My initial thought when I first heard this report
I’d be much more worried if JO is dicking around in practice or not going to class.

was the latter of these. He could have already skipped class, or did something really stupid in class. We know Frank is a teacher and values his guys education, so maybe JO crossed a line there somewhere…

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 8:28 AM CST up reply actions

I am all for discipline but getting young persons to respond positively is different now

than it was 30 years ago. Have rules and follow them, and if that’s the case in this, I support Frank. I just get the feeling that he lacks the ability to sit a kid down and let them vent, then explain why the consequence that will be enforced must happen.

I say all this because I grew up with strict parents and worked hard jobs as young as 7, but I’d hesitate to play for Frank after watching and observing him these last few years. We all crave boundaries but being scared and cussed at is never a good feeling.

One thing that worries me though

is that weed, or a violation of team rules would probably be a certain number of games. Like Jamar this season, we knew would be suspended for 3 games.

This is “indefinite”. Could be zero games, could be the remainder.

That makes me think it is more of a “got to get your attitude correct” type issue. The length of the suspension depends on how JO works to resolve it.

Im not sure what point KU is trying to prove with the Berglund situation

it all sounds very petty. They released him from the team…but want to force to pay for him to go to school??? I’m not sure I understand their logic here.
Only exception I could see would be if he insisted on transferring to another Big 12 school, or one KU will be playing in the near future. Based on what I know of the rules and Berglund’s situation, he can transfer without having to sit out since he hasn’t been in school yet this year. Maybe they are just trying to make him sit out another year…which again brings me back to this seeming very petty on KU’s part…

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 8:25 AM CST reply actions

yep, I don 't get it either

I don’t understand what a school gains from not releasing a player. Makes no damn sense to me at all. Petty and pathetic

by IndianaCatFan on Jan 20, 2012 8:43 AM CST up reply actions

APR score related is my guess.

I think KU started cleaning house and Berglund was not on the initial list, so they didn’t factor him into the equation. Then the events in the story happened and KU might be going “uh-oh” on the APR score so they are trying to keep that score up.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

As a KU fan, I agree it seems petty.

However they are releasing another couple of players from what I understand, so there must be a difference here.

My guess it stems from Berglund holding out on the team. Saying he would show up to meetings and practices throughout the last year and he never did. He does have an appeal coming up in a short time with some committee, so that might change things.

I totally agree. First off, it is our national anthem, so you shouldn’t be substituting anything for “the brave”. But IF you are going to be a tool and substitute something, and are singing in Bramlage, at least say “the Cats”. Saying “the Chiefs” actually makes me wonder if you don’t know the real words and actually think “the Chiefs” is correct.

To me its disrespectful to purposely change the National Anthem

I don’t even like it when people (like pop singers) take really wide interpretations of the thing. You don’t hear that in other countries, even in places where they are free to express themselves (Canada comes to mind).

You don’t have to find it offensive, but I would hope you least find it out of taste. It doesn’t belong outside of Arrowhead, let alone KC. If you want to sing “Home of the Cats” I won’t be mad at you for it, that’s part of your right to free speech, but I may shake my head and give you a dirty look.

The Jimi Hendrix rendition of the Star Spangled Banner is one of the most awful things ever called music

It sounds like someone lit cats on fire and then record their shrieks and yowling.

by Sean T on Jan 20, 2012 9:55 AM CST up reply actions

I actually like that version.

I draw a line between musical interpretation and actual changing of the words.

One is about expressing your interpretation of the song and the other is just changing the meaning.

And before anyone says Jimi was trying to show disrespect to the US, remember that he not only actually fought in Vietnam, but was a vocal supporter or our efforts over their.

A USA hater he was not.

I dont think Sean was saying Jimi was being disrepectful

or trying to hate on America…just that he really didn’t like his version of the Banner.

Like I said above, I said I don’t like the “musical interpretation” not that it’s wrong. In this country, you are guaranteed the right to express yourself and I completely respect and support that. You want to hold that high note for 5 minutes, do it, doesnt mean I have to like it or like you for it.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

For me it comes down to intent.

I respect some musical interpretations and not others.

If I think you are just trying to show off or ‘make a splash’ then I likely won’t respect it.

If you are honestly trying to express yourself, then I will respect it.

But that all comes down to personal opinion.

by mac attack ict on Jan 20, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

But what's clever about it?

How is screaming “CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!” at the end of the National Anthem clever?

by Collin's Bloody Elbow on Jan 20, 2012 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

Well,

They aren’t just screaming “CHIEEEEFS” at the end of the anthem (as in after the complete anthem is over).

They are saying “the land of the free, and the home of the [insert team here]”

It IS kind of clever. I used to say “Cats” when I was a student. I’ve grown up a bit since then and now say “brave”.

But there is absolutely NOTHING clever about saying “Chiefs” when you are not in Arrowhead. That is downright stupid. Like I said above, it makes you wonder if those saying “Chiefs”, regardless of venue, actually know the real words.

Asian girl white guy pumps inside the journalist.

by Jeremy Sharp on Jan 20, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions

I just feel people are getting to easily offended now

I grew up in KC going to chiefs games so it’s just how your raised. I still say Chiefs and i probably always will. I clearly know all the words to our national anthem and am not trying to “disrespect” it by saying chiefs at the end. I know i’m the minority in this but i don’t feel like it’s a big deal.

by RMartell on Jan 20, 2012 6:11 PM CST up reply actions

It's not.

I agree people are getting too offended.

Like I said, if I was at Arrowhead, I would not be getting all worked up about it. I used to say “Cats” when I was attending KSU.

But for someone to say “Chiefs” every time they sing it is a bit much. Because Bramlage, Allen FH, Bill Snyder Family Stadium, Cowboy Stadium, are NOT the home of the Chiefs.

As I said above, when I hear “chiefs” in locations other than Arrowhead, I have to assume the people saying it really have no clue.

Kind of like when I see people flash the “WC” fingers with their left hand. I have to assume they don’t really know what they are flashing, because it only works with your right hand (otherwise it is “backwards C and W”).

I don't think he was anti-US

But Hendrix was trying to make the anthem sound like a war. Thats why his guitar often makes noises that sound like bombs dropping (when he does the dives with his whammy bar) and people screaming. He was clearly linking the US to the horrors of war, and admitted as much later.

Also, he was discharged from the military I believe. Reasons are mixed, some say he pretended to be gay so they let him go, others claim he actually got injured in a jump (he was a paratrooper). He was only in the army a year or two though, and didn’t fight in vietnam.

Sorry, I just read a really good biography on him so I chimed in. I’m a big guitar player, and love Hendrix.

You are 100% correct though in that he supported the troops and military. Before some of his best-known live recordings, you can here him dedicate songs to troops fighting in vietnam or just troops in general. His live version of “machine gun” with the band of gypsies is a good example of this.

JTark and Smitty both hit accurately on some of the common perceptions,, but the truth is we were far more of an afterthought to the British (who were busy battling Napoleon). In fact, having written a term paper on the British popular perspective on the War of 1812 in college, the truth is that most British didn’t even realize it was going on at the time.

I didn't know that about his military history, thanks for the info. The more you know, right?

But I did know that he was trying to make it sound like war. I was just trying to preempt anyone who might think he was un-patriotic or something. I’ve heard that term used quite often in regards to Hendricks and just wanted to shoot it down early.

But I’m pretty sure that he easily could have avoided service all together, right? As in, he consciously chose to join the military because he believed in the cause, regardless of how he eventually left the military. I would like to know if I’m right or wrong in this.

Yes he's been there forever

and looks totally unathletic and like a whiny bitch, but somehow makes shots. If he makes a bunch of threes I’m going to be pissed. I’d rather have Jamar cleverly take his legs out and injure him. I know that sounds bad but I can’t stand to look at him.

He reminds me of a player that the team I coach played against a little while back.

The kid was all of 5’6" and weighed about 250 pounds. But he can shoot the three like crazy. He can’t take it to the basket or anything, but he can shoot. I tried to tell my guys that, and that if we would just close out on him when he caught the ball that he wouldn’t be a threat. But no, the guys had to see him nail three straight to cut our 18-5 lead to 18-14 before they would respect him enough to actually chase him off the 3-point line.

Granted, Page isn’t THAT extreme, but that’s who I thought of when I was reading through these comments.

by tonyg8803 on Jan 20, 2012 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

That to me, is the only reason I have a bit of admiration for him.

He doesn’t look like an athlete or a BB player, but still makes a difference when he plays. You do have to admire the dedication someone puts in to practice to elevate what is essentially their only true skill to a point where they can’t afford to keep him off the floor.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

by ArkieCat on Jan 20, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Not really.

I do when he gets whinnie and especially when he gets hot when we play them, but most of the time, I just like to see it when he grabs the ball, shoots a falling sideways 24 foot bomb that sees nothing but net. The kid takes a lot of falls and hits and gets back up too, so I kind of admire that.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

by ArkieCat on Jan 20, 2012 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

He doesn't bother me and I like to watch him play, good fundamentals.

I don’t like him making shots against the Cats but good defense would solve that problem.

Guess y’all are surprising me with the hatred (not ArkieCat).

I like this opinion Arkie

K-State fans seem to really hate him because he can and has made big shots vs us. But the guy isn’t just some little bitch or something. Funny story, a guy I went to school with at Coffeyville played with Keaton for several years in youth b-ball and junior high and he likes the guy. This friend is usually a good judge of character.

Do not let that team compete with us on the boards.

Other than Page and Nash, that team sucks. If we can’t beat this team on the road, we’re officially a shitty road team and Tech would likely be our only good shot at a conference road win. Not saying we couldn’t win at a&m, just saying I wouldn’t have any reason to expect it (again, if we can’t beat this OSU team on the road).

Tim Tibesar has been named the DC at Purdue.

And I feel bad for the guys over at Hammer & Rails, who generally see this as a good hire.

Please, is there any way we can get Purdue on the schedule in the next year or two???

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 11:15 AM CST reply actions

I was wondering that, too.

The lack of coverage from Cosh leaving strikes me as weird. No articles on it, positive or negative. No questions about replacements. Very strange for a coaching turnover situation, especially coming off a 10-3 campaign which saw the defense play better than in recent memory.

I really don't mind Bill keeping lips sealed when it comes to

his players, strategies, stuff like that. But this is personnell, something the AD should have a little more control over. Cosh is still an employee of a public institution, and we as alums/donors/fans should be allowed to know what’s going on.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

Why?

Are you on a committee responsible for hiring the next DC? Then it really doesn’t matter, except you are curious and want that curiosity satisfied.

Since I have no control over, or for that matter input to the process, I don’t expect anything until it happens.

The USF press release is good enough for me, at this point.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

That was supposed to be the "new thing" with this administration vs. the last one

contracts were public record, anyone could see what was going on inside the department, etc.
Now, we can’t even get our own guys to confirm that Cosh has left, even though So. Florida and Skip Holtz say he is already there.

It is really starting to bother me…

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

As far as an official release and such goes

Snyder never does anything until a replacement is hired. I would expect Cosh to remain on the page and all until we officially announce the person hired to take his place on the staff.

by jtarkman on Jan 20, 2012 3:18 PM CST reply actions

I don't blame JO one bit for being angry.

It’s nearly impossible to develop any type of team chemistry or individual “rhythm” when you don’t have any idea how much you’re going to play from game to game. What other top coach in America has such schizoid sub patterns?

by Collin's Bloody Elbow on Jan 20, 2012 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

I have to say, without knowing specifics, I'm king of with JO on this one.

If Frank wants him to provide better minutes, he needs to give them more minutes. JO depends very much on having a rhythm, but he’s only been allowed to get into that rhythm a couple of times.

by AMS on Jan 20, 2012 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

Now, coaching high school basketball, you see coaches do this kind of thing more often.

It’s still not terribly effective, but I’ve just seen a lot more schizo sub patterns from high school coaches than from college coaches.

Yes do want. I don’t care about any bad press he has from the scandal at Penn State because as far as we know, he wasn’t involved with that. He’s about 55 though, so I guess he’s young enough to have a few years still left to coach when Snyder leaves.
