1/2/12 K-State Links
Happy New Year to everyone, I hope the next year brings you many blessings and accomplishments.
Basketball
K-State gets no respect or maybe it is just Rodney, the notebook regarding Saturday's game and Bill Self is concerned about KU rebounding. Joe Lloyd thought the K-State record against Missouri and Texas A&M was worth writing about but fails to mention that K-State leads Missouri 117-116 in the overall series. Briefs on the teams in the Big XII.
The Lady Cats defeated Marist and will start league play against Texas A&M on Wednesday. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m., fill the OctoDoom with purple and cheer the Lady Cats on to victory.
Football
Hrebec enjoys winning even from the sideline, a good story about someone that made the most of his time at K-State. Thanks Alex for showing class and leadership this year. The K-State effect is mentioned and will hopefully have no influence on the game Friday. The game is called the Cotton Bowl and Coach Snyder amused the press at the press conference and had good things to say about the strength coach in a different article. Jessie Tuggle is now playing linebacker while Sams learns the QB role as a redshirt. Coach Snyder is also a pool player and takes advantage of the hospitality room provided by the Cotton Bowl as the post card from Dallas mentions. And if you run a hotel, doing things like this is a good idea, K-State Sports twitter might cause me to actually sign up for a twitter account.

I realize it is the Cotton Bowl but the dearth of basketball stories is dissapointing.

Our favorite "little" son gets some love
As Darren sets the NFL record for Total Yards in a Season. He also has the distinction of catching Drew Brees’ record setting pass (for a TD). Its been a great season for Darren, and it couldnt have happened to a better guy, or a better representative for the “K-State Way”…Go Cats!
And yet no Pro Bowl...travesty.
Same goes for Jordy.

Sproles is hurt by the fact that he is not a traditional player
Would you send him to the pro bowl as a RB or a WR? Obviously he should be there, but I can see why he didn’t get in with people voting for the more traditional types of players.
Where's that All-Purpose position made up for Klein?

The Sunday "Postcard from Dallas"
has a better write-up about Tuggle’s position change than The Star’s article. You can’t help but root for a kid who is willing to give up being the “star” of the team to be a workhorse linebacker. He obviously has the pedigree and the size/speed combination you look for, but its not a glamorous move. However, with that said it is a GREAT career move for him. If he has a good season at linebacker, an NFL team may look at picking him up in a late round.
The “Postcard” also talks about moving Kyle Klien for D-End to Wide Reciever. Maybe its just me, but I seem to recall that he was already being listed as a Tight End on the roster list, and I remember seeing him catch passes before the game. His size and strength lack of (big time) speed make him a MUCH better fit a TE than WR…just sayin’
On a future NFL draft related note
I really hope someone picks up Manny Lamur in the draft. The kid has the size/spped/strength combo to be a solid NFL backup at OLB or SS, and could even log good minutes in relief. He’s got the tools, I just hope the people making those decisions can see that.
The same with Rat. Yeah, he’s kinda short, but the kid is a GAMECHANGER. His intensity, speed, and strength give him the tools to be a great nickle-back in the NFL (the DB who plays the slot receiver/on 3rd down). I.e. the Chiefs could use his speed and tenacity in their defensive backfield to complement Carr and Flowers…
NCAA to NFL
Conservative estimate based on total US population, number of NFL and NCAA players.
NFL players are in the top .0014 percent and NCAA players in the top .004 percent of the entire USA population.
If you only include males then it is probably closer to .0028 percent and .008 percent, but either way there is a significant drop off in the number of players at the NFL level. As such even if you are great in college, it is somewhat lucky for you to get to the NFL and succeed.

You can really skew that number
if you look at the population of Riley, KS-to-NFL player ratio :-)

I know Jordy. Isn't there another Riley product that played at K-State and went pro?

McGraw, safety with the Chiefs
which is what makes the odds of 2 guys from a town the size of Riley, Ks making it to the NFL w/in a 8 yr period is just off the charts. It still amazes me.
oh hail the Purple and White
Kudos to Tuggle, but let's not make it out to be more than it is.
He wasn’t going to see the field at QB. From all accounts, Sams had already passed him up and he couldn’t beat out Sammy. This is his best chance to play in his senior year, hands down.
Let's hope he's out there as a 2nd stringer or even starter and smashing people

I've liked Hrebec ever since i saw him at the first farmagedon game
Its really nice to see a starter tirned backup embracre his new role and enjoy being on a winning team rather than just complaining and transfering

Agree
The kid is a class act and totally unselfish.
Loved reading about Tuggle's move
His athleticism may allow the loss of Lamur’s coverage ability from the linebacking position to be mitigated.
I really don't see linebacker being a weak position for us in the near future

His dad was a beast. Should be a good move for him.

Seau, Tuggle, Brown...
I’m really liking how the defense is shaping up for next year.

Wish he would have moved at the start of the season
when it was obvious he wasn’t going to see the field.

Yeah, but who would he have played over?
Not Arthur, Tre or Manny. Maybe Childs when he came in for Arthur in the last game, but that’s about it.
You need 3 QBs ready to go at any time, IMO. Sams wasn’t quite ready to be thrown into the fire if it came to that. Now he probably is. This comes at the right time.
Walker was injured quite a bit
plus having more than 3 good LBs is a good thing. Fresh legs and all.

Was at the Giants-Cowboys game last night.
As I left we were held up by the exits so Jerry Jones could pass through. Most around me heckled him for his ’boys losing. I instead chose to yell “Go Cats!” at him.
I don’t think he got it.
OMG
The helmets Oregon is using for the Rose Bowl are just ridiculous…….
Gotta bring the “bling” i guess, but sweet jebus, thats a LOT of chrome
at this point I think America's getting sick of each new combo
Do they really have to has something different every game?
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I heard they came with 20s and a dope system.

Tuggle at LB
I hope he works out in a new position. I know he is athletic, however, with all the press he came to us with out of Juco, and at best was 3rd string QB, makes you wonder if he is willing to put the effort into being a D1 player.
I haven't heard that effort was a problem, it sounded like it was his judgement (and throwing INTs)
These bowl practices are going to be huge for him trying to change positions. I hope it works out for him.
Oh wow! Blackmon got away with an endzone salute!

Didn't you hear?
There is yet another KState rule. You can salute now after a touchdown.

OSU pulls a KSU special
Outgained by 180 yards, opposing QB went 27-31, and they found a way to win in the end while letting Stanford choke. Oh, and they gave up an early 14-0 lead.
It was the KSU-OSU game all over
except they played on a neutral field, and the OSU offense is (truthfully) at least a TD’s worth better than KSU’s
