Open Game Thread: College Football Week One

Photo

After last summer, I didn't think it was possible to have a worse offseason, but 2011 proved me wrong. But we can put all that behind us now, as college football gets started in earnest today.

We've already had a worthy appetizer, as Baylor knocked off Texas Christian in a thriller last night. I don't know about you, but my personal "Robert Griffin III Fear Meter" spiked last night.

The Big 12 slate is below. For a thorough rundown of national games of interest, check out Sean Keeley's College Football Buffet. The game thread for K-State's game will be posted one hour before kickoff.

Missouri vs. Miami (OH), Faurot Field, Columbia, Mo., 11:00 a.m.

Texas Tech vs. Texas State, Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock, Texas, 6:00 p.m.

Iowa State vs. Northern Iowa, Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, Iowa, 6:00 p.m.

KU vs. McNeese State, Memorial Stadium, Lawrence, Kan., 6:00 p.m.

Oklahoma State vs. Lafayette (Louisiana?), Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater, Okla., 6:00 p.m.

Oklahoma vs. Tulsa, Gaylord Family -- Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, Okla., 7:00 p.m.

Texas vs. Rice, Darrell K. Royal -- Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas, 7:00 p.m.

Yeah, Chuckie is making a name for himself here.

Also, I think Gene Chizik could be heading on a win NC, get fired three years later path. The guy is really not a very good coach.

I see Utah State holding on to win here.

I'm wanting to start a viral campaign to lobby for a Pac-18 that includes us and Kansas.

Truthfully, it could work. I was up until 2 AM talking with TB trying to convince him that I wasn’t a crazy person.

Doug Gottleib tweeted that some in the Big 12 were lobbying for 18 to 20 teams in the league, and he guessed we were one of them.

Bring on the Cats

by Panjandrum on Sep 3, 2011 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah.

Basically, it’s not completely retarded for the following reasons:

1) It adds two schools in the Central Time Zone where the Pac desperately wants more inventory
2) It allows the creation of two nine team divisions that better align geographically reducing the issues regarding non-revenue sports travel
3) It reduces the risk of political fallout because more teams are included in the BCS
4) They get KU basketball and it follows the traditional ‘travel buddy’ system seen in the Pac

There’s a lot more, but if you draw it out on a map, it looks pretty good. Mizzou goes to the Big Ten with ND, Pitt, and Rutgers, and the SEC and ACC do a little swapping and pillage the Big East for the remainder.

Really, in my scenario, the only schools that get screwed are ISU and Baylor, and everyone pretty much accepts that as an inevitability anyway.

by BlackCats on Sep 3, 2011 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

A BOTC original?

Who’s our video guy?

A Pac-18 with two divisions could work:

West: OSU, Oregon, WSU, Wash, Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA, Utah
East: Arizona, ASU, Colo, UT, OU, OSU, KU, KSU, TTech

Just not sure whether they think KU, KSU, TT are meaningful enough to go with 18 instead of 16.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, here's the other thing...

Larry Scott is talking about regional networks as well. CU and Utah probably don’t have the juice to really necessitate their own regional network, but if you throw us in there, you get a regional network with two more schools in the Central Time Zone.

I mean, stranger things have happened.

If the Pac really wants KU, they have to go to 18. Texas is bringing along Tech. There is no way around it. And KU is more likely to fight for us than Mizzou for numerous reasons, the least of which is the fact that MU will find a home five seconds after this conference implodes anyway.

Bring on the Cats

by Panjandrum on Sep 3, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I guess my biggest concern is KU going and KSU not.

I think Scott could rationalize it by grouping KU and CU along with Utah as one market and I don’t get the impression KU either has the power or the desire to make sure we come along for the ride.

I shudder to even consider how devastating it would be for KU to be in the Pac 12 while were laid out to pasture.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Same boat.

The big boys may not really care because in their eyes Baylor, ISU, KSU are drops in the ocean of revenue, but I think college sports would lose more than a few viewers if this all happens and multiple schools get screwed by this greed.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

My thoughts, too

And although its better than nothing, I wouldn’t be thrilled with the Big Least.

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 3, 2011 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

But he needs #18. There aren't a lot of good options west of the Mississippi that aren't already claimed.

I mean, Baylor is a no because Hell will freeze over before the Pac accepts a private Baptist university into their ranks, and it’s not like they’ll take ISU.

Think about it. Nearly every single school in the Pac has a ‘travel buddy’.

UW/WSU
UO/OSU
Stanford/Cal (N. Cali)
UCLA/USC (S. Cali)
UA/ASU
UT/Tech
OU/OSU
Utah/CU (Mountain Time Zone)
KU/KSU????

I mean, logically, you can make a case for it.

Mizzou has other claims. I think they’ll take their chances out east and align with those schools because it’s a better fit. Besides, we get along better with KU, the Oklahomas, and Texas anyway.

The only Big 12 teams left out in this scenario would be ISU and Baylor, and really, it’s a foregone conclusion that ISU is screwed and the entire universe hates Baylor.

Making sure 10 of the 12 teams have a home in a BCS conference helps make sure that this all goes a lot more smoothly.

Bring on the Cats
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. -- Mark Twain

by Panjandrum on Sep 3, 2011 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't get the sense Big 10 is going to try to grab Mizzou anytime soon.

So I guess the hope is they’d go to SEC?

I guess I don’t understand why 18 and not just 16. Two 8 team leagues would work. And then the question really becomes whether Larry Scott wants KU for basketball and no TT or to bring Tech to appease UT.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Texas may be able to leave Baylor behind...

But they can’t leave two of them. They have to take one. You can’t leave two swinging in the wind.

Why 18? Well, the desire of the Pac, supposedly, is to get more of a presence in the CTZ for TV purposes. Even though a lot of media folks think we don’t bring much value, the entire state of Kansas is college sports crazy. Being able to add the two of us brings in KC, appeases some of the political fallout, and a nine team division means 8 conference games with four non-con. That’s kind of a nice sweet spot.

Basically, adding us wraps up pretty much every viewing area they would possibly get west of the Mississippi (as the map shows below).

by Panjandrum on Sep 3, 2011 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope you're right.

Also, I know basketball doesn’t do anything in this conversation, but the Pac 16 would be a pretty brutal conference without KU/KSU.

Again, I know it pretty much means nothing, but maybe someone in Pac 12 world is concerned about having such crap basketball and KU/KSU certainly add value there?

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

After the first mention of this, ESPN had this conversation on CFB Live...

And they had KU/KSU to the Pac to bolster the BBall.

I've been wondering

what FOX and ESPN have been doing behind the scenes the last few days. They didn’t want to see Super-Conferences last year, would one of them be willing to help launch a Sooner Network in order to ensure OU is satisfied to stay in the Big-12?

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 3, 2011 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

It would be interesting to have KU/KSU go to Big East

and have West coast dominate football and East coast dominate basketball.

Think of how bad the Pac 16 would be at NCAABB – OSU, Oregon, Washington St, Stanford, Cal, Utah, Colo, TTech, Arizona State. I mean, that is just pathetic.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Suppose Baylor was a higher valued team...

What objections does the PAC really have against baptists?
I mean, they have baptists on the West Coast as well…

by GrumpyCat on Sep 3, 2011 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, definitely not a cultural fit.

Cal-Berkeley is left of Lenin

and the Pac-10 is made up of non-religious-affiliated universities. Ken Starr being president of Baylor can’t be lost on UCLA, USC, Stanford, Washington, Oregon and Cal.

It’s basically because the Pac hates religious institutions.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 2:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Thinking about it a bit more, Pan

I see two major flaws:
1) Larry Scott is on record saying 16-team conferences are the future, not 18
2) They want to add value without divvying up the revenue pie further
Not sure what we bring to the table in terms of additional revenue, but we would no doubt be a net consumer. UT and OU would not.

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 3, 2011 2:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Larry Scott also needs to get his plan past the legislators and the government as well...

The BCS is already under fire for anti-trust laws. Consolidating even more makes it worse.

There are currently 67 BCS teams. 68 next year when TCU joins.

4×16=64
4×18=72

Add four more, and you don’t have to worry about any BCS school left behind taking you to task on Capitol Hill.

They’ll get the revenue pie because there will be less inventory overall as the mid-major conferences dry up and whither away. They’re just going to have to make sure that to reduce the number of teams from 120 to 72, they need to keep everyone in an AQ conference in an AQ conference.

I would hope if KSU gets left out that the few schools screwed put together a massive lawsuit.

There would be severe damages to those schools that would change the quality of the universities and thus do real harm to the states.

BYU will never be BCS. They don't have the support or respect.

They must have an AQ conference, which is odd that it’s taken this long to secure a commitment from them.

Here's another one with three pods of 6...

This gives you a chance to potentially consolidate travel even more, and cross divisions a little more easily to give the conference greater exposure to one another.

Champions of West, Central, and East divisions then do… what exactly?

I think this is more for tv.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the idea is to have regional sub-networks of the conference network. Four channels are better than one.

This IS only about money and tv contracts after all.

When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.

by BlackCats on Sep 4, 2011 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

I mentioned this the other day

This was kind of what was being bandied about last year before the Nubs left, except it would have been a TV alignment with non-cons between the two leagues.
Anyway, if the Big-12 collapses and I had my way we would definitely be heading to the PAC. But Weasel Larry Scott won’t take us ‘cause we don’t “move the TV needle.”

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 3, 2011 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Some teams are going to have to be taken for insurance purposes...

If they want to consolidate, they need to redefine their definition.

If your goal is to reduce the number of FBS teams in an effort to ‘consolidate’, okay. That may be doable.

If your goal is to reduce the number of teams in an AQ conference, you’re going to have some massive issues legally and politically.

However, ensure that every AQ member has a home in this Brave New World, and add a couple of loudmouth mid-majors with a decent claim…well, it helps the medicine go down a whole lot easier.

Basically, consider us as a way to get more games in the true definition of ‘prime time’ and as the conference equivalent of a tax writeoff.

Pan, I get the tenor of your post,

That's true, but

it WAS a very stupid thing to do.

James Madison is getting some coverage on ESPN right now.

Read on a SBNation site that Billy Cosh won the job…but he hasn’t seen the field so far. Was curious to see what he looked like out there.

OSU is now officially looking around...

http://sportsblogs.star-telegram.com/colleges/2011/09/big-12-future-becoming-cloudier-as-osu-joins-ou-in-plans-to-explore-other-options.html

"We are moving ahead," Hargis said in a statement distributed by school officials, noting that the overall strength of OSU’s athletic programs puts the school "in a position to explore and pursue options" outside the Big 12. Hargis acknowledged the possibility of remaining in the Big 12, where an expansion committee has been formed to respond to Texas A&M’s impending withdrawal from the 10-member league to explore an opportunity to join the Southeastern Conference.

Noted that on the thread from yesterday

And Mizzou is piping up as well, although Mike Alden makes a fair point about Boren not helping with stability and expansion efforts with that statement.

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 3, 2011 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, it looks like Boren might be acting as a Chocopockets-lite.

It’s frustrating, because if these schools just would keep their panties from getting bunched up in their proverbial buttcracks, this thing could really work. Of course, it would help a lot if Beebe was an actual good leader…

I think the latter aspect you mention

has a lot to do with OU and Mizzou’s frustration.

Come, if Beebe were the problem he'd be fired

who is saving his job?

oh hail the Purple and White

by Furnace76 on Sep 3, 2011 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions

The ultimate frustration in all this...is the timing.

Between A&M and now OU, et al. We had not had one down of football in the new Big 12 and they want to blow it up right as we start. We could have done this at the start of the summer or the end of this season but right at the proverbial opening kick-off was just a douche thing to do. Greed, greed, greed.

are all the schools basically saying, take me, take me?

Not just you.

And it’s really pathetic.

It’s getting tougher and tougher to view Larry Scott and Jim Delaney as the villains in the soul selling of college athletics when leaders at institutions of higher education in our conference act like insecure girls in middle school trying to make sure they can grab a seat at the cool table during lunch.

You try to read the articles, disect the quotes, etc...

But Boren seemed to go against everything Joe C. has been saying in public lately. So, this is probably him driving that train. Or maybe they got booster feedback, and the big money guys want the Pac-12. Who knows?

The bottom line is that the Big 12 is probably dead at this point. I don’t think there’s a way to come back from this. When the folks steering the expansion committee say they’re looking around, well, you better start loading up the lifeboat.

I will hate him less if this is true.

Someone needs to light a fire under Beebe’s ass, that’s for sure.

The problem though with it is perception.

It makes the Big 12 look like it’s about to collapse even more than before, which will make it even harder to attract new members.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, to me the quote read:

“Get three quality members to join in the next three weeks or we’re looking out solely for ourselves and that means Pac 16, see ya Big 12.”

Let’s hope Beebe got the message.

by yeahboozin on Sep 3, 2011 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought so, too

And I’m guessing it still isn’t registering with Beebe.

@leetg I would up the percentage of the four to the Pac12 from 70 percent to 90 percent.

@RRB4KU Pac12 wants Texas, and Texas wants Tech to come with. If both said no, Pac12 could go after Kan, Missouri.

And this is just asshat territory here. I mean there is exploring and then there is taunting your fellow conference members.

not reporting at least from what I read on the Austin paper’s website.
