Open Game Thread: College Football Week Four
Conference play begins this week for the Big 12, and for the first time this season, each school that is in action plays on Saturday. Even better, it begins with two matchups of teams that can contend this year. Oklahoma State travels to College Station in a game where everyone in the Big 12 will be cheering for the Pokes. Later, Oklahoma will be host to Missouri as the Sooners look for revenge after last year's stinging defeat in Columbia. It's also a light week of action in the Big 12, with only six teams in action.
Nationally, you should keep an eye on Arkansas' trip to Tuscaloosa to face the Crimson Tide when the K-State/Miami game is on commercial. Later, jump back and forth between the Oklahoma/Missouri tilt and LSU's visit to Morgantown, W.Va. For a full rundown of the weekend's action, don't miss Sean Keeley's College Football Buffet.
The Big 12 slate is below. Check back an hour before game time for K-State's open game thread. I hope it will post this time.
Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M, Kyle Field, College Station, Texas, 2:30 p.m.
Rice vs. Baylor, Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco, Texas, 6:00 p.m.
Nevada vs. Texas Tech, Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock, Texas, 6:00 p.m.
Missouri vs. Oklahoma, Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, Okla., 7:00 p.m.

If we’re going to pick between BYU, TCU, and Louisville, I’m going with Louisville at this point if Brigham Dame isn’t an option.
I still want 12 though.

I'm with you on Louisville.
Established facilities, great basketball program, and they expand the “footprint” of the conference, but not by so much as to be ludicrous (hello, USF).

Lousiville is a no-brainer if we go to 12
At 10, I think you could make a strong argument for them, as well as a couple other teams.
I think Nienas actually voiced that UT is resistant to more than 10.

Well he said it as:
The conference is resistant to more than 10, generally.
Bobby Hill: What's a meat examination team?
Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
Right, but OU said they wanted 12 just last week, and everyone else seems to like having divisions
That just leaves Texas resistant.
I'd have to say that if I thought the conference could have legitimate stability at 10,
I much prefer that. I think it hearkens back to when conferences were conferences, and all of the teams played each other every year. With that said, I’m not sure if we CAN achieve stability at 10.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
If we do go to divisions, I think we have to split Texas/OU up, and give everyone a cross division rival
The old B12 was hurt when KSU/Nebraska couldn’t keep up with the South, which shouldn’t have surprised anyone given that most of the league’s talent comes from down there. We need East/West divisions.
It could happen
If we add both Louisville and BYU, then it might be possible, given that those two schools are so far apart.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
My favorite has always been Louisville
good fit culturally, and will help stabilize against Tx power. BYU has gotten too cozy with Longhorn, IMO.

I'm making the call right now:
(This is contingent upon Bryce Brown getting significant carries. If he doesn’t, all bets are off.)
Cats run for 200+ yards, Klein throws for 150+ yards, the defense creates 3 turnovers, and KSU wins 31-20.

I really hope we see BB
I imagine us starting to get behind, and just like a pro wrestling match, some sort of badass entrance theme comes over the loudspeaker, and out runs Bryce Brown to piledrive the entire Miami defense.
I don’t even watch pro wrestling, and this still sounds badass (though I have a lot of friends who did and do).

Wow, GT choke.
Dude drops a wide-open TD pass that would have given them a two TD lead, then Yellow Jackets let UNC back run up the middle untouched for 50+ yards to tie it. Lame.
This just makes KU look even worse.
maybe they will move to the trey ... then I can watch it 8-)

Bob Davie doesn't even know the rules of the game.
The refs in the UNC game just made a HORRENDOUS kick catch interference call, and Davie claims that bobbling it doesn’t make it live for the defenders to come after the return man. Unless they’ve made SIGNIFICANT changes to the rulebook since I last saw it, he’s completely full of crap.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
LOL, UNC just lost on a 10-second runoff.
Fitting, considering that rule was changed solely because they lucked into a bowl win last year without it.
Yes death by their own rule...ironic.

Been fixating lately on the decline of KSU football
I think we are the only Big 12 team without a bowl victory since 2003. We also have the fewest bowl appearances over those seven seasons. While nowhere near the Awful Days, you could argue that K-State has been the worst program in the conference since the 2003 championship. (ISU and KU would get votes; but their highs have been higher…And this year ISU has been more impressive.)
I do, however, hold on to a sense that Snyder is bringing the team back to respectability. Given the remaining schedule, I’m not convinced that there are many more wins, though. Man, this would be a big one today.

A lot of it goes back to the subpar recruiting Snyder did after 2000...
After the great Oklahoma coach grab, our recruiting suffered, overall. Snyder didn’t do a very good job of finding young, energetic coaches that could relate to recruits.
And, he rectified that situation by not hiring a bunch of young, energetic coaches that can relate to recruits.
But, hey, he’s setting up his son (who isn’t a football coach, and who has no discernible job skills) to be the football coach, so we have that going for us.

I don't know if I agree...
I can’t say that I know a thing, really, about assistant coach qualities. But it does seem like he’s pulled some bigger names and talents these past couple of years. And I don’t know that young and fresh is a magic bullet.
To use an imperfect analogy, I used to teach in a poor, low performing, largely black and hispanic school. Now, I fully agree that the best and most effective role model teachers would often be young and black/hispanic teachers. Yet one of the most effective was a 70 year old ex-military white guy.
I agree that the staff in 2005 was a far cry. But I’m not willing to assume that the current bunch is inadequate. Cosh looked like a complete loser last year, but right now his squad is the hope of the team (for better or worse). And there does seem to have been incremental improvement over the past three or four years. And whereas you can argue that Sean Snyder wouldn’t be the special teams coach without his dad, you can argue (even more convincingly, I think) that no one would think him particularly unqualified if he were named “Smith” or coaching at any other university.

Just clarifying the two days later QB and pointing out that KSB was only mad because HE was the one getting called out. I actually agree with you, KSB for whatever reason has a hard on for BB, but it’s hard not to like Hubert. Until I see his production go in the crapper, he’s my guy.

I'm LOLing at the massive catfight going on between Catbacker98 and KSB right now
Catbacker goes back through the 1800 comments from game day and responds to each of KSB’s posts about Hubert/BB. And then, KSB is utterly incapable of letting it go and has to respond to each and every one of those posts.
