Open Game Thread: College Football Week Three

Iowa State kicked off the Big 12 weekend with a 24-20 win over the Connecticut Huskies last night. Ordinarily, I'd say that a home loss by your defending conference champion to Iowa State would be the worst news of the weekend for a conference. But when you hear that afounding member and another league stalwart have reportedly applied for membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a loss to ISU seems piddly.

That's not meant to be a shot at Iowa State, either, as the Cyclones are now 3-0 with wins over Iowa and UConn, and get a week off to prepare for the Texas Longhorns. Paul Rhoads has the Cyclones on track for bowl eligibility.

The Big 12 slate is below. A full rundown of the national games of interest is here, at Sean Keeley's College Football Buffet. K-State's game thread will be posted at 5:00 p.m.

KU vs. Georgia Tech, Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Ga., 11:30 a.m.

Texas vs. UCLA, The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif., 2:30 p.m.

Texas Tech vs. New Mexico, University Stadium, Albuquerque, N.M., 2:30 p.m.

Stephen F. Austin vs. Baylor, Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco, Texas, 6:00 p.m.

Western Illinois vs. Missouri, Memorial Stadium, Columbia, Mo., 6:00 p.m.

Oklahoma vs. Florida State, Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Fla., 7:00 p.m.

Oklahoma State vs. Tulsa, H.A. Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, Okla., 9:00 p.m.

Realignment news shock of the day:

Early reports suggest Syracuse and Pitt have applied to the ACC. Say what?

Smart moves

Get ahead of the inevitable. You have to admire their pluck and shrewdness even if you hate what is happening to college football. They saw the handwriting on the wall, heard the rumors of Texas-talking-to-ACC and knew if they wanted a home when the dust settles the ACC provides them with the best fit (smaller football schools, great basketball, strong academics without the cutthroat football recruiting of SEC).
Meanwhile, what happens to West Virginia? The guess here is they have an SEC invite waiting…

I'm not obsessing about the Nubs,

but given the 2 very different outcomes in Nub vs WASH last year, I’m very curious how this goes in Lincoln.

Also, NU has been less than stellar at home.

screw this, I should be sleeping anyway.

I'm loving what I'm seeing of the KU "defense"

The very first play of the game I watched was a gorgeous 95 yard run by GT. This is my kind of game! 90 total points here we come!

Turns out

KU couldn’t hang enough points to get from GT’s 66 to a total of 90… Eh heh heh.

All I've learned about the three drives I've watched of KU

Is that they can’t stop the option, and their offense is decent and being helped by a lack of a Georgia Tech secondary defense

I actually think this Pitt/Syracuse news...

…could be good for the Big 12. It very possibly puts schools like TCU, Louisville and Cincinnati in play for the Big 12, and there’s always BYU waiting in the wings. If these are options, perhaps Oklahoma can be convinced to stay, we can add UL, UC and BYU, and be back at 12.

Or maybe OU’s already taken this too far and there’s no turning back now. In which case, pray for the Pac-16 with KU.

We'll carry the banner high!

I thought that for a second, too, TB

As part of the third stage of the Kubler-Ross model (bargaining). But I’ve fast closed in on the last stage (acceptance).
As much as it would make sense for OU to pause now and realize if Texas is willing to make some concessions the Big-12 now actually has a chance of becoming very viable once again, I don’t see it happening. They don’t schedule those Board of Regents meetings – with the intent purpose of discussing conference alignment – just to turn back. K-State is fast heading up $hits Creek without a paddle – and we can thank our lovely partners for taking every opportunity to destabilize the conference in order to grease their own exits.
I actually think the ACC, Pitt and the Cuse look the shrewdest out of all this. And note that the ACC also unanimously joined hands and raised the exit fees from $10 to $20 million. That it called a proactive partnership where everyone hangs together and works for the benefit of the whole – everything the Big-12 has not been.

by CT-K-Stater on Sep 17, 2011 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, especially the part about working together

but when the Big Boys have ulterior motives (and if the B/12 folds, it won’t be because of chaos, it will be because of a plan) it’s hard to stick together.

I'd really like for someone who's feeling Chicken Little about all of this,

to put together an actual 4 Superconferences format without KSU involved. Keep in mind, there’s no way in hell that Boise is a part of it, no matter what the talking heads say. They just don’t “fit” anywhere.

this Cuse and Pitt move to the ACC leads me to hope the 16 team superconference thing may stall out, because I can’t see who the B1G adds to get there. I always assumed if the Big went to 16, Pitt & Cuse would be a team added.

That would be contingent on OU actually BELIEVING Texas in actually going to make and stick to concessions.

So far the only thing Texas has proved to me is that they will cut off their own nose to spite their face. The pure unadulterated greed is what started this crap in the first place.

They manipulated this conference from the get go. We have an empty suit for a commissioner. Don’t enforce exit penalties. Let one school determine where conference offices and post season tournaments are held. The Big Ten, ACC, PAC are conferences. What we have is a collection of individuals and one of those individuals is a complete and total bitch.

Those meetings were announced before the Pitt/Syracuse news dropped last night

So it’s likely the content of the discussions will still be different. Again, doesn’t mean OU will turn back, but I think it increases the possibility.

Penn State is barely beating

Temple. The dirty little secret is (but for the very top teams in the power conferences) there isn’t that big a difference between many of the present “left behinds” today. Un. of Central Flor is probably a top 20 team right now. Houston is a top 25 team. ConfUSA is not a weak conference. This is part of what is scaring those who would manage the perceptions. “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.”
