Open Game Thread: College Football Week Three
Iowa State kicked off the Big 12 weekend with a 24-20 win over the Connecticut Huskies last night. Ordinarily, I'd say that a home loss by your defending conference champion to Iowa State would be the worst news of the weekend for a conference. But when you hear that afounding member and another league stalwart have reportedly applied for membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a loss to ISU seems piddly.
That's not meant to be a shot at Iowa State, either, as the Cyclones are now 3-0 with wins over Iowa and UConn, and get a week off to prepare for the Texas Longhorns. Paul Rhoads has the Cyclones on track for bowl eligibility.
The Big 12 slate is below. A full rundown of the national games of interest is here, at Sean Keeley's College Football Buffet. K-State's game thread will be posted at 5:00 p.m.
KU vs. Georgia Tech, Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, Ga., 11:30 a.m.
Texas vs. UCLA, The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, Calif., 2:30 p.m.
Texas Tech vs. New Mexico, University Stadium, Albuquerque, N.M., 2:30 p.m.
Stephen F. Austin vs. Baylor, Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco, Texas, 6:00 p.m.
Western Illinois vs. Missouri, Memorial Stadium, Columbia, Mo., 6:00 p.m.
Oklahoma vs. Florida State, Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Fla., 7:00 p.m.
Oklahoma State vs. Tulsa, H.A. Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, Okla., 9:00 p.m.

Realignment news shock of the day:
Early reports suggest Syracuse and Pitt have applied to the ACC. Say what?

Smart moves
Get ahead of the inevitable. You have to admire their pluck and shrewdness even if you hate what is happening to college football. They saw the handwriting on the wall, heard the rumors of Texas-talking-to-ACC and knew if they wanted a home when the dust settles the ACC provides them with the best fit (smaller football schools, great basketball, strong academics without the cutthroat football recruiting of SEC).
Meanwhile, what happens to West Virginia? The guess here is they have an SEC invite waiting…

I'm not obsessing about the Nubs,
but given the 2 very different outcomes in Nub vs WASH last year, I’m very curious how this goes in Lincoln.
Also, NU has been less than stellar at home.
screw this, I should be sleeping anyway.
I'm thinking of watching the game at a sports bar or Buffalo Wild Wings
anyone else in the KC area thinking of going out. It would be nice to have someone to cheer with.

I'm loving what I'm seeing of the KU "defense"
The very first play of the game I watched was a gorgeous 95 yard run by GT. This is my kind of game! 90 total points here we come!
"If you don't want to work, become a reporter. That awful power, the public opinion of the nation, was created by a horde of self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditch digging and shoemaking and fetched up journalism on their way to the poorhouse." - Mark Twain
Turns out
KU couldn’t hang enough points to get from GT’s 66 to a total of 90… Eh heh heh.

Sure they did
66 + 24 = 90! I think being in Vegas for too long has scrambled your math sense.

Yep, my quick glance at the score when checking the KSU-KSU
box score was off – though it was 66-14. Wishful thinking it turns out.

All I've learned about the three drives I've watched of KU
Is that they can’t stop the option, and their offense is decent and being helped by a lack of a Georgia Tech secondary defense
Please tell me I'm not the only person who thought Kent State was Kentucky State?

I actually think this Pitt/Syracuse news...
…could be good for the Big 12. It very possibly puts schools like TCU, Louisville and Cincinnati in play for the Big 12, and there’s always BYU waiting in the wings. If these are options, perhaps Oklahoma can be convinced to stay, we can add UL, UC and BYU, and be back at 12.
Or maybe OU’s already taken this too far and there’s no turning back now. In which case, pray for the Pac-16 with KU.
We'll carry the banner high!

Perhaps
but in the meantime I’ll start monitoring our potential new conference mates in the Mountain West.

True, but they still won't find a place in a major conference.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
I thought that for a second, too, TB
As part of the third stage of the Kubler-Ross model (bargaining). But I’ve fast closed in on the last stage (acceptance).
As much as it would make sense for OU to pause now and realize if Texas is willing to make some concessions the Big-12 now actually has a chance of becoming very viable once again, I don’t see it happening. They don’t schedule those Board of Regents meetings – with the intent purpose of discussing conference alignment – just to turn back. K-State is fast heading up $hits Creek without a paddle – and we can thank our lovely partners for taking every opportunity to destabilize the conference in order to grease their own exits.
I actually think the ACC, Pitt and the Cuse look the shrewdest out of all this. And note that the ACC also unanimously joined hands and raised the exit fees from $10 to $20 million. That it called a proactive partnership where everyone hangs together and works for the benefit of the whole – everything the Big-12 has not been.
Yep, especially the part about working together
but when the Big Boys have ulterior motives (and if the B/12 folds, it won’t be because of chaos, it will be because of a plan) it’s hard to stick together.
oh hail the Purple and White
I'd really like for someone who's feeling Chicken Little about all of this,
to put together an actual 4 Superconferences format without KSU involved. Keep in mind, there’s no way in hell that Boise is a part of it, no matter what the talking heads say. They just don’t “fit” anywhere.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
Actually, after reviewing the present conference lineups
this Cuse and Pitt move to the ACC leads me to hope the 16 team superconference thing may stall out, because I can’t see who the B1G adds to get there. I always assumed if the Big went to 16, Pitt & Cuse would be a team added.
Who knows.
oh hail the Purple and White
I'm with you, for the most part, on that.
I saw it as Pitt/X from the Big East as well.

That would be contingent on OU actually BELIEVING Texas in actually going to make and stick to concessions.
So far the only thing Texas has proved to me is that they will cut off their own nose to spite their face. The pure unadulterated greed is what started this crap in the first place.
They manipulated this conference from the get go. We have an empty suit for a commissioner. Don’t enforce exit penalties. Let one school determine where conference offices and post season tournaments are held. The Big Ten, ACC, PAC are conferences. Penn State is barely beating
Temple. The dirty little secret is (but for the very top teams in the power conferences) there isn’t that big a difference between many of the present “left behinds” today. Un. of Central Flor is probably a top 20 team right now. Houston is a top 25 team. ConfUSA is not a weak conference. This is part of what is scaring those who would manage the perceptions. “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.”

Temple QB is worse than Coffman
I know, I know, hard to believe – but true. Temple’s O-line is rough and QB is even rougher. Thus the end result is yet another underwhelming cream-puff win for the always-overrated Nittany Lions.
figures I can't post a link properly
Anyway its the report of Baylor and Iowa State “offering” themselves to the Big East
The hell with BEVO.
Joke link, or news story?

How does Georgia Tech take its foot off the gas against KU when they already have 541 yards rushing with 7 minutes to play?
The hell with BEVO.
now 746 yds
and I don’t think tech is even trying

They aren't really.
12.4 yards per carry is straight up sick. 95 yard TD run on their first play from scrimmage.
The hell with BEVO.
Maryland 31 West Virginia 37
Turned into a helluva game in the 4th with about 2:50 left.

I can't believe you guys can't see all of the positives with KU's defense
A couple minor scheme changes and they will one of the best out there.

admittance is the first step
if it’s any concession, your offense looks very efficient. I’m still searching for the right word to use to describe them. No it’s not great, but they can block and run, and honestly I’m not sure I wouldn’t rather have what you have. I digress.

if the Big 12 goes bye bye I hope Texas toes indy and ends up like Notre Dame. They get their money but become largely irrelevant except for name recognition.

KU's defense was so bad it broke the Yahoo stat tracker.
It just gave up keeping track of the stats of the game at halftime.

Serious question--
After today, will K-State be favored against any team except (probably) KU?
I hate to sound so pessimistic. I think this could be a somewhat better team than last year. But with ISU looking great, I’m not sure where more than two or three more wins are coming from.

I'll have to watch Mizzou pan out
any more injuries, plus a beat down scheduled against OU the week before they roll into town, might put us on the positive side of things going into gameday depending on how the ’Cats fair against the U and Baylor back to back.

Was wondering if I was the only one
I usually enjoy coming here to see what people’s perceptions were about the game. Frustrating to not be able to do so after our first shutout since 2006.
TB, Bracket, or Pan will have to take care of this.
I don’t have sufficient permissions to go into the “guts” of a post made by another mod to see what the problem might be.

just kidding
Maybe he just thought there was no hope in KC this year? Maybe he just likes the college scene better?
No, you’re right, he probably left for the same reason that Raheem Morris left his D-coordinator position at KSU to go back to being a D-Backs coach for Tampa. Management issues.

End game is near
Longhorn to Pac???
And if this POD system comes to fruitition, I think we can all see now that this “plan” has been being played out since the Osborn Perlman hypocrisy fest. The trips Scott made to the midwest in the summer of 2010 was when everything was finalized. And the “saving” of the B/12 last summer was just a smoke screen for a year until the Tx. Legislature was out of session.
Sickening, this consolidation thing.
