12 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Ty Zimmerman
![]() |
#12 Ty Zimmerman |
Position: Defensive Back Previous College: None Projection: Starter Status: On Scholarship |
Little needs to be said by me about Ty Zimmerman (b. June 23, 1990), our grayshirt quarterback-turned-safety who started nearly every game in 2010 and was the most reliable player in the back seven not named David Garrett.
For that, the Football Writers Association of American, Phil Steele and Rivals.com all recognized him a freshman All-American. He also earned multiple preseason accolades this summer from various football publications.
Zimmerman finished just two tackles shy of the top-five list for season tackles by a freshman in K-State history.
Whether it was making a career-high 12 tackles against Oklahoma State or returning a punt 41 yards nearly to the goal line against Colorado or destroying Garrett Gilbert's will to live with two interceptions, he did a little of everything.
And I expect more of the same in 2011. Hell, I expect even more out of him, truth be told. Until Tysyn Hartman proves that last year's slump was due to injury and scheme, not ability, Zimmerman remains the surest bet we have at safety.

Hoping a praying there is no slack off of production as seems to be the case lately for the secondary..
I just don’t see it happening with Ty though. Some of the past letdowns have been from injuries or guys getting caught up in the attention/pressure.
Ty is seasoned (Coach’s kid, led 6A school to State title) so his head will be fine. As long as he stays healthy, look out. As a thinking man’s safety (former QB) the game will continue to slow down for him this year, which will let him see where he needs to be to make plays even better than he already does.
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.
I think Zimmerman is going to be just fine.
The kid is clearly smart and talented.
I think part of the strange good one year, bad the next with the secondary is due to changing schemes and a very weak D-line and LBs which put a ton of pressure on the CBs and safeties.
There’s no excuse for some of the ankle tackles and horrible angles to the ball, but I do think with both a stronger D-line (can’t be much worse) and LBs (better talent + more experience) that Hartman will be back to his good ways and Zim won’t have a sophomore slump/
As you point out
coaching has a lot to do with this (I’m assuming by “schemes” you aren’t referring to simply tactics). Bad (nay, horrible) pursuit angles was the Tim Tibesar MO. And unfortunately after one year of Vic Koenning it returned last season. Bad pursuit angles lead to long runs and make a slow defense look even slower.
What I like about Zimmerman ...
(besides the heady game) is that he makes tackles. In space, he puts the man down. Especially in run support. Not saying he’s a heavy hitter, just that guys don’t slide past him for a couple of extra yards after he meets them around the line of scrimmage. They go down.
