Bio

Position: Running Back

Previous College: None

Projection: Second-String

Status: On Scholarship

John Hubert (b. Feb. 24, 1991) might be the forgotten man of the running back competition, which is remarkable when you consider that the way things stand coming out of spring, he very well could be the starter 33 days from now.

Somewhere between the as-yet-unfulfilled hype of Bryce Brown and the electric potential of DeMarcus Robinson, there is the man who broke LaDainian Tomlinson's single-season rushing record in Waco high school football.

Anyone who watched Hubert's recruiting videos in 2009 knew Bill Snyder found a steal. All Hubert does in those videos is break long touchdown run after long touchdown run. He has deceptive speed and endless tenacity.

The lack of hype entering the season might be somewhat deserved, considering Hubert lost several key fumbles at inopportune times in 2010 during his rare forays onto the field.

But I'm here to tell you to put all that aside. Even if Brown beats him out for the starter's role as we all expect, Hubert's going to get at least as many carries as William Powell did last year, if not more.

And some of them will be long touchdown runs, like the ones his cousin, Perrish Cox, oft scored for Oklahoma State.

You too huh?

I’m mildy worried about Bill criticizing Bryce’s work ethic, so I won’t be surprised if Hubert starts to try to make a point to Bryce. Then Bryce comes in and runs for 150 yards over a speedbump, and all doubts are settled. At least that is what I’m hoping for.

I don't think there will be any surprises here.

Whether Bryce has been slacking off this summer is one thing. But he’s not gonna have much of a choice when practice starts and Snyder is running the show. If he still isn’t working hard, I think we’ll probably hear plenty more of it and have a pretty good idea who’ll be starting game one. But it’s too early to start assuming Hubert’s the guy just because Bryce may not be working as hard as his brother.

I didn't say I think Hubert's the guy

Heck he could be taken out after the first carry, I just doubt Bill will accept Bryce’s lack of commitment and let him start the first game of the year. That’s just me. There’s no fact based information. Just me guessing on Snyder’s principal.

Yeah, I more meant that Hubert could very well be the guy, but regardless we won't be guessing in a month.

Ideally Bryce would participate in voluntary workouts, but he won’t have a choice in the matter in a day or so. If he doesn’t step up under Snyder’s watch, well then we’ve got a problem. But I think this is all overblown anyway. My guess is Bryce Brown will start the first game but Hubert will get plenty of carries too.

yea I would tend to agree how big of an issue it's being made out to be

But my recent memory also doesn’t recall Snyder saying anything similar since coming back. If it’s enough of a point for him to publically say something about it, it makes me wonder if the lack of participation is that apparent compared to what one might consider the “baseline” or “average” year in and year out.
