37 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Braden Wilson

#37 Braden Wilson |
Position: Multiple Positions Previous College: None Projection: Starter Status: On Scholarship |
Braden Wilson (b. Oct. 9, 1989) is another player who grayshirted and subsequently was pressed into action "early" without the benefit of a redshirt year, like Travis Tannahill and Ty Zimmerman.
Such measures in 2009 and 2010 became necessary due to the incredible ineptitude of Ron Prince, who left Bill Snyder with one of the most discombobulated, unbalanced rosters in NCAA Division I history.
Needless to say, Wilson was one of the revelations of the 2009 season, Clearly, he didn't really need a redshirt before making his impact known on a weekly basis.
I list him at multiple positions, even though fullback will be his majority role, because he drilled some late last season and during the spring at defensive end, where he was decently effective. He also packed on 11 pounds since spring.
Although depth seems shored up enough that such cross-training hopefully won't need testing, it's better to be prepared. And Wilson sees fewer offensive snaps than most players as a fullback, so why not play him both ways?

Braden Wilson could be our Owen Marecic.
Would be fun to see a two-way player in this age of football. And could definitely help with defensive depth, which is Snyder’s favorite talking point these days (rightfully so).
It sounds like we are pretty deep at d-tackle
We could definitely use another passionate d-end though.

I've never thought about this before, but a greyshirt year means the player is a year older than other "true year" players, right?
