Austin Meek has an excellent analysis of the difficulty in measuring the academic success of student athletes.
I don't have time to read it this morning, but others have highly recommended the Poynter Insitute's Kelly McBride's examination of ESPN's "suspension" of Bruce Feldman last week.
I haven't seen any actual news stories on this, but apparently there is a rumor that Texas A&M is once again interested in moving to the SEC. Peter lays waste to Texas A&M's mindset. Of course, Beergut's primary concern is how much guts and pride Oklahoma has in standing up to big, bad Texas (I think my favorite part was where he said UT needs the Red River Shootout for monetary purposes).

All this A&M talk is silly
One meeting of regents and we’re revisiting something (the Longhorn Network) that everyone was aware was coming last year when the Big-12 chose to stay together. If A&M wants to make more money than they should be hard at work trying to get a Big-12 network revved up that includes the rest of the conference teams. Enough already. The SEC is not coming calling on A&M so long as the Big-10 and Pac-12 aren’t looking to expand past 12 members. What would the gain be for the SEC?
I just thinks it's laughable and they need to stop embarrassing themselves ...
a&M, I mean.
Also, as it pertains to the future of the Big12 … imo, while it is certainly in no way desirable to see a&m leave the conference, the Big12 would still do fine without them. This conference is about Texas and OU. And as long as those 2 schools want to have a Big12 with them in it, along with a collection of reasonably competitive schools, there will be a BCS level Big12. If a&m ever leaves, they will be replaced and it probably won’t be all that big of a deal.
Oh, and the SEC would consign a&m to a state of near permanent mediocrity in football, even if they did want them. Rarely do you see a fanbase bent on self-destruction to this extent.

They're like a dog with a bone ... that's fucking poisoned.

I don't know
A&M AD Bill Byrne has always sounded as if staying in the Big-12 was the logical, smartest choice for the school.
These A&M-to-the-SEC rumors strike me as wishful thinking on the part of Aggie fans. Nothing against their school or tradition, but they are plying in Fantasy Land waters here. Ain’t going to happen. I know its summer and there is a long gap between spring football and the start of the new season, but this kind of nonsense just stirs the media pot.
The Big-12 is not going to disintegrate, every media and blog-hack needs to get over it. If they were to break up it would have happened last summer when the “haves” had the opportunity to blow up the conference and land in a safe place.
Even if A&M left the conference – and by no means do I want them to – they would be quickly replaced (BYU?). As Itchy points out, so long as OU and Texas remain, the conference stands. And why would those schools want to leave? A&M to the SEC makes about as much sense as all this hyperbole about Texas going independent. Its nonsense.

Respect Lost
It’s amazing how much I used to respect Texas A&M. What a bunch of crybabies. If they were to leave I say the Big 12 should finally send the invite to TCU. TCU has been better than A&M for some time now and I would rather road trip to DFW than College Station. But if A&M went to the SEC would they vote someone (Vanderbilt) out or add another team to get to 14 teams or add two more on top of that to get to 16 teams?
Time for Beebe to fly into Tulsa...
…where all secret deals are done. Get TCU to commit and kick aTm to the curb.

or Arkansas...Fayetteville's a quick drive to Tulsa-town
Arkansas’ athletics department as a whole kicks the crap out of TCU. TCU just has a football program. Arkansas has a football program that supports a ton of extra crap.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Not going to lie,
I would prefer Arkansas to TCU. I think TCU would be more receptive to a B12 invite.

I've never understood why A&M is the idiot in PJs stories, but now I'm understanding why
I’m half expecting to see iamthe13thman have a huge banner saying CHOCOPOCKETS!!!!! one day.

I think it stemmed from when the Adventures of the Big 12 series started...
I think it was around 2008 and Texas A&M football was floundering under new head coach Sherman; the personality just stuck for the series.

Go look at the result of the 1998 Big 12 Championship Game. Some people have never recovered, and they write for this blog.
It’s okay. I’ve met too many K-State fans irl to let one crybaby ruin my image of Wildcat fans.

TB
If you don’t understand why I said Oklahoma needs to be willing to call texas’ bluff on the RRS, you don’t understand the financial dynamics of that game, and what it means to both athletic departments.
I'm taking bets on a TB versus Beergut "financial dynamics" IQ battle.
I’ve to TB and -49.5. Anyone want in?

Texas just signed a $300 million TV contract...
…has one of the most recognizable college brands in the country (merchandise sales), a huge stadium (ticket sales), and some of the deepest-pocketed donors in the country. So no matter what they get in terms of ticket sales and donations from one game, I’m pretty sure it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of their athletic department income.
We'll carry the banner high!

Personally i can see exactly why TA&M would want a move. As long as they are in the big 12 they will take a backseat position to everything Texas-wise,recruiting mainly. Moving to the SEC gives them the ability to be THE texas team for recruits from texas who want to stay home, but still play in the SEC. Oh,and do you really think after the SWC fiasco that Arkansas would entertain the idea of being in the same conference as texas again? i mean, really?
They will always ... always ... take a backseat to Texas ...
no matter what conference they are in.
Jesus Himself could return wearing a 12th Man t-shirt and Texas kids would still choose to play for Texas over Texas A&M.
What Texas A&M doesn’t have to do is take a back seat to Texas on the field of play. Nothing is going to change the behemoth that is Texas, in terms of inherent advantages. But if I was an A&M fan, I would choose the route that included the possibility of crushing my enemy, seeing him driven before me, and hearing the lamentation of the women. Texas A&M can be a player in the Big12. They should expect, as a program, nothing less than a top 3 finish in football regularly. They should expect to beat Texas at least half the time.
Or they can run away. We’ve seen that kind of thing before.
I agree that the Big12 has no chance of pulling Arkansas away. Doesn’t matter a bit to me. If A&M leaves, they will be replaced by TCU or BYU or whatever. The conference won’t even skip a beat. I hope they stay, but there it is.

Agreed
The move to the SEX conference might be appealing to them right now, but no one else is seeing it. UT will always be the big dog in Texas, there is no way around that, but A&M fans think they can change that by moving to the SEC? Please.
And finally, I agree Arkansas isn’t leaving the SEC.

I'm honestly getting tired of all of this talk...
The legislature won’t let them split. Larry Scott even said he didn’t predict the political factors that prevented his grand plan from coming to fruition.
I’ve said it before, and I will say it until people stop talking about this…
As long as there is an NCAA, and Texas is a part of it, these schools will reside in the same conference. The Earth is more likely to unpair from the moon before A&M has the actual, tangible ability to look for a new home, regardless of how chapped they may get about their current station.

SIgh. Like I said above
its the summer doldrums and the media hacks just won’t let this go away…
What a complete bunch of nonsense. Even if the SEC were interested in bringing in A&M or Oklahoma or both, why would they want to expand to 14 teams right now. Just to renegotiate their current TV contract and in the process initiate what they didn’t want to see happen last June, the blowing up of college football as we know it? Also, as Pan points out (and I have to in repeatedly in responses) OU is going nowhere without OSU; ditto A&M without Texas (or Tech or Baylor).
But there is always a media idiot out there to rhapsodize on what they “know” for certain based on speculation and nothing else. At least the A&M fans understand what is going on in the conference. These jokers are just dying to write the obit for the Big-12. Why, I haven’t a clue.
