87 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Sheldon Smith
![]() |
#87 Sheldon Smith |
Position: Wide Receiver Previous College: Cerritos College Projection: Second-String Status: On Scholarship |
Sheldon Smith (b. Dec. 7, 1989) caught a few nifty passes against UCLA in 2009, but pretty much was an afterthought for the rest of the season, appearing in only half the games.
Then he redshirted in 2010, at which point he pretty much fell off everyone's collective radar. End of the story, right?
Not so fast, my friend. Smith served notice in the spring game that he will be a factor in this season's receiving corps.
He caught five passes for 138 yards and one touchdown for the Purple team, with a long catch of 61 yards, and at times, he looked like the best receiver on the roster.
While he likely won't displace the front-line trio of Brodrick Smith, Chris Harper and Tramaine Thompson, Sheldon Smith showed every sign of being the fourth or fifth name listed in fall box scores from the overall position group.

Great!
I like to see some competition at each position, then all the players get better.
I am really hoping some of these gents have breakout years.

Me too
What are the chances Sheldon sees time at PR or KR?

Doubtful IMO.
Rose and Thompson probably have pretty good hold on those spots.
Smith was impressive in the spring game though. Could definitely see him being a factor and a great injury replacement should the team have the same bad luck as last season at that position. Certainly a guy who can give a lot more on the field than his walk-on status would suggest.
