67 DAYS TO KICKOFF: Shaun Simon
|
#67 Shaun Simon |
Position: Offensive Line Previous College: Hutchinson Community College Projection: Second-String Status: On Scholarship |
Shaun Simon (b. Jan. 27, 1991), like so many other JUCO players, already has followed a long and circuitous route even before taking a single Division I snap.
He originally committed to Colorado out of high school, but failed to become academically eligible. To his credit, he worked his butt off at Hutchinson to graduate in three semesters so he could be a spring enrollee.
But hardship ensued during his time with the Blue Dragons, both on and off the field. He redshirted his first season and appeared the favorite to start at center for them last fall, but a meniscus injury ended up costing him all of 2010.
Meanwhile, the Buffaloes changed conferences and coaches, prompting Simon to reopen his recruitment. That's when we entered the picture, thanks to our good relationship with Hutch.
What we got is a massive load of humanity (at 337 pounds with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, he's a worthy successor to Kenneth Mayfield's jersey number) with good feet and good technique.
He's currently running with the second string behind Wade Weibert's heir-apparent, B.J. Finney, at center, but the gulf between them chiefly is one of experience, not ability. If Simon can learn the playbook this summer, he might start.
Although he appeared to tweak his knee again during the spring game, there apparently was no lasting damage. But it might be something to keep an eye on.
Eligibility-wise, Simon has three years to play three, but he also might be eligible for a medical hardship that would grant him a fourth year of eligibility to compensate him for his lost freshman season. Keep your fingers crossed...

So let me get this straight
This guy is 6’ 0" tall, and has a 7’ 3" wing span? Plus he weighs 337? Dude must look like a frickin gorilla.
wide shoulders
Weighing 337, he probably has a wide frame. A bunch of his wing span is probably in the shoulders. Although his arms are probably not short.
Wonder if he has any interest in rec league basketball, he’d dominate the paint in the 6’ and under league.

2012 Recruit
We signed Mat Sweirt from Conway Springs. If his bio is correct he is 235 pounds and runs a 4.5 40. Great athletic ability. With that size and speed does anyone know if there was a reason he was not heavily recruited?
He's from Conway Springs.

Verbaled, not signed.
And I expect we will redshirt him, and possibly grayshirt him, to pack on as much weight as possible.
They want him as a defensive tackle, if that tells you anything.
You know
If this kid is really that much mass of humanity, we need to have him on the d-line plugging holes. Could be a real run stopper I would think.

Excellent point

That's why we moved Allred over there.
They’re basically the same player, right down to both of them having knee trouble, but Allred’s been in our system longer.
