UM could name basketball coach by Monday
Wow, Miami's not even trying anymore...
Two guys who failed in the Big Ten, two mid-major guys who signed extensions and likely will turn you down, and two guys who just got fired?
Weak sauce. On that note, I officially declare MIAMI HURRI-GATE to be over. What exactly were we all worried about again?

Also, a Miami radio host tweeted today that Martin and Shalala did have brief contact through intermediaries.
Apparently, she told him Miami’s price range was $1 million. I’m not even sure Dalonte Hill would have taken the job for that price.
Miami basketball = joke. The ACC should kick them out and invite in someone more competitive, like, say, East Carolina.
Or Florida Gulf Coast.

I told you that I'd take the job
like I wrote yesterday, the speculation amused me.

It was the assistants
my cost would have been inexpensive … but hiring quality assistants … that’s expensive … hope you are worth it.

Interesting
Assuming “John Capel” is actually Jeff and not a long-lost brother that also coached at OU, four of their six supposed candidates are coaches that previously failed at big BCS schools, all of which have significantly better basketball programs than Miami.
Sounds like a winning strategy to me.
They are writing the next ESPN original movie, "The U Two".
A documentary on the absolute destruction of a Div 1 Basketball program.

I actually think Capel would be a great hire for them.
He clearly can recruit. Obviously things went very wrong at Oklahoma, but he did take them to the Elite Eight and I was actually fairly impressed by how hard that team played this year. They weren’t particularly talented, but that has a lot to do with all the guys who left the team the year prior. Think Capel could actually succeed at Miami. And I’m all for it. He’s a good guy and Frank would stay with KSU.
Them and NU both!

I like Austin Meek, but
what’s with all of the KSU beat reporters writing articles essentially saying Frank doesn’t want to be at KState?
It’s not journalism. It’s speculation. I guess they may be butthurt over how Frank handles them, but it just seems silly to me.
Between the Robinett idiocy, Melliner incompetence, and Meek suggestions (though I do think Austin is light years ahead of the rest in terms of writing ability and intelligence), just seems like the local writers aren’t on our side these days.
Haven't you heard? You don't write his name here. He's "TDWMNBN."
But yeah, Meek morphed into TDWMNBN for at least a column.

Yeah, that was lame.
But I wasn’t TOO surprised. It was a journo defending a pseudo-journo, after all.

I know what it refers to.

The only contact anyone should be forced to have with Donna Shalala ...
is through intermediaries.
The threats to take Martin will be from the real ACC programs and the Big East.
Of course, he will have to continue to succeed at a high level for that to happen … so it’s a relatively good problem to have.
And there is still plenty of room to bump him up when we need to, now that Miami never made a serious play for him.

I posted something about that a few days ago ...
UConn isn’t a threat to take Frank, for multiple reasons:
1) I don’t think Calhoun is done. He’s one of those guys that has to coach until he’s forced out or he dies on the bench.
2) Even if Calhoun is done … Kevin Ollie is on the fast track to take that program over. Everyone there wants it to happen, even though he’s only been there a year.
3) Even if Calhoun is done and UConn decides Ollie isn’t ready … Frank isn’t good enough of a hire for UConn right now. I’d be shocked if he even hit the radar.

The fact that Miami didn't really pitch him isn't a good thing, IMO
Hear me out…
For four years, all we’ve heard about is “Miami, Miami, Miami,” and the general consensus was that if that job ever came open, it would be the “one job” Frank would seriously contemplate leaving for (excluding ‘duh’ locations like UCLA, UConn, Duke, Kentucky, etc.). Regardless of whether or not he was going to actually take it, it was the crossroads where he’d most likely sign a new contract with Kansas State, or he’d move on, and we’d be starting back at square one.
Now, after everything we’ve learned, Miami apparently showed very limited interest in Frank. We can theorize and postulate why that’s the case, but the bottom line is that the interest was low enough that his agent couldn’t use it as leverage to get Currie to bite on an extension. Here we are, nearly a month after the coaching carousel started turning and a week after the season has officially ended, and there isn’t one blip in the KSUniverse regarding our interest in sitting down with Frank and re-extending him. Which, one year after he signed an extension, is not a bad move on Currie’s part. I believe there’s a clause in his contract that we will sit down with him at the end of next year and discuss extension again, but what was supposed to be a windfall for Frank, financially, hasn’t materialized into anything. The golden opportunity came up, and pbbbbbblllbbbbphf.
Why does this concern me? Well, two reasons. One, when you have people getting extended left and right all over the place, and when Frank has proven that he’s got a Top 4 program in the Big 12 conference and is an NCAA Tournament contender every year. In my estimation, that means he should be paid in the Top 4 of conference coaches, which would mean he needs to make about 300-400K more a year. So, because of that, I’m hoping there are no feelings of disrespect or tension with our administration. Just because we don’t have to pay him more doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay him more.
The second is that a renegotiated contract means that the buyout would most likely be increased. It current sits at $1 million. Next year, $500,000. Low buyouts mean your potential of being poached by lateral moves is heightened. If he feels disrespected, and he’s in a position to be poached, it may increase his inclination to jump.
I guess my thought is that when you’re dealing with talent, my thought is to be more proactive than reactive. I don’t want to get into a position where a lateral move is introduced into the picture, and due to strained relationships and hurt feelings, we’re in a bidding war that would/will cost us more than if we were to just give him a moderate increase.
As the coaching carousel winds down, and you see who some of these people are hiring, pickin’s are slim. NC State hired Mark Gottfried for Christ’s sake. OU paid $2.2 million for Lon Kruger. I don’t want to get into a situation where our only option is to hire Bruce Pearl with a show clause (without would be perfectly acceptable/awesome, but he’s going to be toxic for a while) or promote someone on staff.

Yes.
I agree with all of the above. Now we don’t really know what conversations Currie has had with Frank, but as long as KSU remains at the current level we need to make sure Frank has every incentive to stay put. Hopefully the success he’s had, the chance he’s been given, and the passion of the fans, etc. make a pretty compelling case. But if an extension secures Frank for the school and makes these Miami situations a bit less worrisome, then I am all for it, regardless of when a renegotiation clause is supposed to set in.
Not out of the woods until I read that Miami has hired a different coach, but seems like Frank ain’t going nowhere. And I couldn’t be more excited about it. Been getting very interested in the coming recruits. By all accounts A-Rod and Gip are the type of hard nosed players Frank loves. I think we could be in for seeing pretty great four year careers with those two.
Miami didn't pursue him because he's way too expensive for what they're willing to pay.

I don't get all this Bruce Pearl love.
Maybe it’s just my overly burdensome sense of ethics, but I have a problem with a guy who ratted out an opposing coach, then assisted the media in painting him as some sort of martyr to ethics, but then turned out to be a lying, cheating SOB himself anyway.
Show cause or not, results or not, I’d be embarrassed to have Pearl stalking Bramlage. Worse, I say that knowing I’d never have been embarrassed to have R.M. Knight coaching the ’Cats.

If ADJC ever hires Bruce Pearl, I’d lose a ton of respect for him. There’s plenty of good coaches out there without hiring a rat fink cheater.
