AP Source: Haith expected to leave for Missouri
RED ALERT!!!
Terrible hire for Missouri, but far more concerning is what this means for the future of K-State men's basketball.
ADJC better be working on a raise NOW, not tomorrow. And even that might not be enough if Miami gives Frank the chance to go home.
Thankfully, I don't think Miami has a new AD yet, so they might just screw this up by not even offering Frank the job.
But I won't breathe easy until the Hurricanes have a new head coach who isn't a certain scowling Cuban-American who just watched the best player he'll ever coach ride off into the sunset.

I know.
This whole thing has the potential to make me despise Purdue, New Mexico, and Missouri with passion.
I think Frank stays. Not sure why. Just a feeling.
They were never getting Painter
He played them for more money at Purdue.

I'm aware of that. I'm beseeching God as to why he couldn't have interceded on their behalf and spared us this concern.
But after the events of this week, I think it’s pretty clear: God is a Jayhawk.
BS
If God was a Jayhawk, KU wouldn’t have missed 19 3PT in the VCU game. And they wouldn’t have lost to UNI, the BB brothers, or any of the other ridiculousness that has chased after KU in the NCAAs for the last 20 years.

You do know that Crazy Old Testament God is Missouri’s patron deity, right? He did intercede, that’s why we’ve been going through this for the last three weeks.

ugh. I'll be curious to see how Frank handles this.
Big decision for that guy. I don’t envy him at all.
Miami (FL) is a hole, basketball-wise.
It’s not even a sideways step. It’s a step DOWN, and into a conference where no schools other than UNC, Duke, and Maryland have ever won on anything like a regular basis. If he takes the job, he’s insane.

Just depends on how much he wants to go "home".
No way, given its history and the fact their head coach just bolted at first opportunity to a job on equal footing with KSU, that Frank doesn’t know what Miami is for basketball and recognize where he is right now is a much better job.
Just such an unnecessary stress for us. Frank Haith? Really, Missouri? JFC.
Maybe I'm just an ostrich.
But this really doesn’t scare me at all.

Your optimism has been hit and miss lately, though.
Full credit to Panjandrum. He sensed a disturbance in the Force weeks ago, even when such developments were beyond the ken of the rest of us.
The thing is,
there’s just no logical reason for him to take it. I know Miami’s where he grew up, but it’s also where he’s got some REALLY bad memories from the HS coaching days as well. And the job is a couple of rungs back down the coaching ladder as well.

Hey, I'm just playing devil's advocate here.
Coaching is a fraternity of liars. Not one month ago, Mike Anderson went out of his way to call a Missouri newspaper and swear he wanted to retire at Mizzou.
Now, we obviously all believe Frank is cut from a different cloth, and I think he is. But what if he’s not? We’re about to find out. And if it turns out that he indeed is cut from the same cloth as Anderson, all of Frank’s quotes about honesty and loyalty are going to look just as bad in retrospect.
And I have to get up earlier than normal because we're on new work schedule now.
No way do I sleep after this. Shit.
On the plus side, if we somehow come out of this with our coaching staff intact or at a similar level of acumen...
…I’m really going to enjoy sweeping the Tigers every year. Because this is just an ungodly shitty hire for them. Unbelievably shitty. Any hire was going to be a downer after the Painter debacle, but if I’m Joe Mizzou fan right now, I’m eating a metaphorical bullet with a cyanide chaser.
Yeah.
Alfred (if you’ve been following RMN today, you know why I spelled it that way) would have been a MUCH better hire than Haith.

In the reconfigured Big 12, Frank Haith is at best ninth.
He might be able to out-coach Scott Drew. Might.
That's what makes Haith the 10th or 10.
He’s not even good at recruiting.
He's like a worse-recruiting version of Drew, I think.

by K. Scott Bailey on Apr 4, 2011 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions
Don't think he cheats.
Another thing Haith is bad at.
Yeah it's really inexplicable.
Haith is neither an up and comer nor an established good coach. He’s an established at best mediocre coach. If I’m a Missouri fan I’d be happier with Cuonzo Martin, Shaka Smart, hell the assistant coach for Morehead State than Haith.
Why spend money on a known commodity that is known to not be all that good? Bizarre. And infuriating at the moment.
They got turned down by more than a dozen guys at the Final Four and Alden panicked.
Only explanation. He flat panicked.
I TOLD you not having Jon Sunvold on the committee was a bad fucking sign, didn’t I? I even had the fracking formula to prove it!
And that formula WAS awesome.

I think I'm going to have to adapt it to take into account recent developments.
Maybe add a coefficient for “out of left field” candidates.
Because they had no other choice...
There is NOBODY else out there. Who else were they going to get? Its really not that great of a job. Smart isn’t leaving for anything that isn’t a top tier program, his stock is too high. Alford wasn’t leaving, the Painter thing was a joke, and Martin went to Tennessee…
Mizzou was out of options really
Shit happens when you win championships
They absolutely should have thrown $2 million at Cuonzo.
He must really dislike Mizzou to be staying at the doomed cesspool that is Tennessee.
They could have taken a high-profile assistant from a guy like Matta, Izzo, or Roy.
Anything would have been better than Haith.

I don't even want to consider the possibility, but should Frank leave, who is on our list?
Does Underwood just get promoted? I like Underwood, but please don’t be the case.
Any great coaches gathering dust? Go after Shaka Smart. Jon Gruden?
If Frank leaves for that hellhole of a job, and I'm John Currie,
my first call is to Mark Fox, Georgia’s head coach. He currently makes $1.3 million, has ties to K-State (worked here from 1994-2000) under he-who-must-not-be-named, is a fine recruiter (Kentavious Caldwell-Pope says hello), is a genuinely nice guy (he lectured my Coaching & Officiating Basketball class back in 1995 when the head coach broke with tradition and refused to do so), and I think he would at least take the call.

Fox is a KU grad. And he still has a grudge dating back to Asbury's firing, apparently.
Don’t think you’ll ever see him in purple.
I say Underwood first, and then we maybe look at Henson. But I imagine Underwood would take it in a heartbeat — and most important, he only would leave if he was fired or retired.
Actually, Fox is a GCCC grad, with his Bachelor's from Eastern New Mexico.
Unless he got his master’s from KU or something, I don’t see anything about being a KU grad on his Wiki page anyway. As for Asbury, when Coach Fox taught our class that day, I didn’t get the impression that there was much “attachment” between them. He didn’t bad-mouth him, but he also didn’t talk about him like Frank does Huggins. But then again, I was a 21 year old kid, so I may be completely wrong about that.
Also, you won’t go very far in the business if you hold grudges against every school that fires a coach you worked for. And how could he NOT understand that after 6 years of putridity, Asbury HAD to go?

But you have got to be fucking kidding me. Good God, it’s hard to be a K-State fan.
How in the fuck could Mizzou pull Frank Haith’s name out of a hat for their hire? Like it’s some kind of inbred-backwoods-fucking-your-cousin plan by Mizzou to get Frank out of Manhattan.
I’d feel slightly badly for Mizzou fans, but right now I’m too miffed and confused at the functionally retarded person running their athletic department.

Sadly, this was the first thing I thought of..
They’re pretty pissed at Martin for something about a recruit and his high school credits not counting. If Haith gets less than a five year contract I’m calling conspiracy.

So who should be more upset at this development? Missouri or K-State fans?
I mean, any thought about Frank leaving for the vacancy is just speculation at this point, but I think losing Frank would be much worse than hiring Haith.
Mizzou fans should be more pissed
but if Martin leaves it may signal an end to the unholy alliance…I side in with I don’t think he will be leaving as at his relatively young age the “time to go home” pull is generally not as strong. Of course, his pal from West Virginia may have words of wisdom should the opportunity present itself. We’ll just have to wait and see….

It was the second time that they couldn’t do so.
Mizzou, easily. If we come through this intact, our Frank will DOMINATE their Frank.
And I hope they didn’t take Mike Anderson’s 1-9 record against KU for granted, because I can’t see Haith winning even one against Darth Self.
They're taking this surprisingly well over at RMN.
I figured there would be more sliting of wrists and gnashing of teeth.

We don’t know what players if any he’s bringing with him, we don’t know the status of Otto Porter or Phil Pressey, and we don’t know how Haith is going to function in the new Big XII. What’s the point of panicking? If the program crashes, then we’ll know.

But I can’t imagine Frank leaving for Miami. It’s a terrible job. I thought Anderson would leave for Arkansas. I never thought for a single second that Painter would leave Purdue. Home certainly has a pull. But I absolutely cannot imagine Frank leaving K-State for the Miami job.
Yeah "going home" is only appealing
When a good team is waiting for you there. Anderson had a talented team waiting for him at Arkansas, Roy left KU right when it lost its two best players and went to a UNC team STACKED with talent.
Martin would be leaving a decent team for a pretty bad one…
Although losing Pullen and Kelly can’t help… still I would say the odds of him leaving NOW are less than 20%

twitter is scaring me. lots of people think he’s leaving. Jason Whitlock (who I dislike) says Roy Williams would take KSU job. Seriously?

And it’s not even about money for Frank.
Frank likes to pay his assistants well. No way in HELL does Miami ever consider for a minute paying Dalonte Hill more than $150,000, much less 400K bones.
I think Martin is a good coach...
But Is he replacable? I don’t think he is going anywhere, but it seems like most KSU fans are like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, the guy is a good coach, and he has recruited decently (not great, decently). He also has had two good years with a top three player in the league.
I mean, it sucks, but can’t KState get a guy who could do as good of a job if he ever did leave? Especially now that KSU has finished in the top 4 of the conference for a few seasons?
Problem would be if he left now there is no one else out there… but if he did leave in the future… which I don’t think he would… just food for thought. Please don’t take it as putting down Frank

I've heard a ton of KU fans say that. Mostly because of the tournament disappointments.
This was a point of discussion on 810 a few weeks back, as a matter of fact. Trust me, I didn’t just make it up. And believe it or not, but RCT isn’t the only corner of Jayhawkdom in the world. I know he’s popular there. I’m speaking of less-informed segments of the fan base.
Well, most KU fans I know love him
And these are the die-hard, went to KU and all the games, real deal fans. Not casual bandwagon “I root for KU when they are winning” types.
And I don’t think people being critical of Self is a result of said people not warming up to him, I think its mostly on rediculous expectations and a feeling of disrespect from the national media (we need more titles because people on TV always say “an elite school like Kentucky, Duke or UNC”)

Self was tempted to go home after 2008 when OSU offered him their job
He said no. We know now that we have Self for pretty much forever. The guy is an absolute legend in Lawrence after the title. Sure, people grumble about the tournament losses, but still.
Plus, people always knew Roy could be tempted by UNC, his alma matter. Self’s alma matter already offered and he said no. Plus its a clear step down from KU, while UNC is UNC…

Roy didn't return home
the first time it was offered either, right? It was that second-chance opportunity that lured him away. Same for Huggins if I remember correctly. So, the next time Self gets a chance to return home – then maybe some degree of worry would be warranted.
Same thing for me and all the KSU fan base – we should only consider worrying the 2nd time around. At least, that’s how I am defending my state-of-mind for now…

Not happenin'...
Miami’s only appeal is Frank is from there…other than that, we are talking about a school whose coach thought Mizzou was a big enough step up to leave the mighty ACC, who averages 60% fewer fans per game than K-State (only 4,700 per game in 2010), and whose AD thought leaving Da U for Texas Tech was a step up.
Outside of baseball, the University of Miami, in facilities, support, and success, isn’t a desirable landing place for a coach that is already established at a Power Conference school.
I doubt they’ll even be able to give him a raise to come home….and they definitely won’t be able to pay enough to get both him and Dalonte.

Relax folks.
What happens, happens.
As I mentioned the other day, the $ to hire/keep a coach had risen with the Anderson and Kruger hires. HCFM is making $1.5 million (wikipedia) while the 2 coaches mentioned are making $2.2 million.
Beyond the money is the basketball culture of the school. Both Arkansas and OU have/had a basketball culture. K-State despite the 90’s and early part of the 21st century also has a basketball culture. For a coach this is a nice situation, you have people willing to support your program while you rebuilt it, of course said fans can also be very vocal when things are not going so well.
HCFM has mentioned that he likes K-State several times and ADJC is smart enough that he is probably already talking with HCFM to make sure he stays at K-State. Can the ‘U’, or any other program, offer enough money to lure HCFM away from K-State? Probably, but what is the amount? I’ll take the ‘U’ job for $1 million/year and a 5 year contract but not sure they would be willing to take a chance on a new coach such as myself. And I don’t think they are going to offer HCFM the $2.2+ million that is required to hire a successful coach in today’s coaching bazaar.
Worst case is HCFM leaves. In that instance, the smart choice is to promote Underwood to HCBU as he knows K-State and knows basketball.
I doubt that HCFM leaves K-State for less than $2.2 million, and for that matter I do not think he is wanting to leave. Yes, he would probably talk to someone but that is only the smart thing to do. Will the other school(s) make a tempting enough offer? Guess we will find out in the next month or two.

Looks too much like HBCU (historically black colleges/universities).
No way Martin leaves
Miami currently has an interim athletic director. I don’t see any way that he would throw out minimum $2.5 million a year to hire away Martin, and he might even need to flash 3+.
Miami goes for a smaller named, mid-major coach who they can pay at a max 1.5.
