Post-Spring Depth Chart

The depth chart that follows after the jump is based solely on observation, extensive note-taking and some wild-assed speculation. Take it with a grain of salt.

If you have questions, ask them in the comments and I'll respond. I'd rather do that than write up blurbs for every player based on what largely was a glorified practice.

Some impressions from viewing the 20+ minutes of highlights:

Klein obviously with an eye opening performance, WRs looked very good (Sheldon Smith could be a great find), Arthur brings an athleticism we haven’t seen in awhile on the defense, the D-line actually made some plays, and Bryce has great burst even with a bum ankle.

Snyder seems really pleased with this team and I’m not sure what to make of that. He also has said he is enjoying himself more this time around – which is fine, but I hope that doesn’t take away any of his competitive fire. Is he smiling about this team because he knows this team might actually be really good? I hope so, but hard to tell.

SLamur looked okay. He’s definitely athletic. Tuggle wasn’t very impressive. Seems like the 1) Klein 2) Lamur 3) Tuggle depth chart is actually legit. Don’t want to read too much into spring game performances (see: Carson Coffman in 2010 Spring Game), but Klein looks like the starter for sure. He adds a vertical element to the offense we haven’t had since Freeman. His release is a bit slow, but I imagine his mechanics will only improve. His confidence is there. That much was clear.

Garrett and Malone could be a very stingy secondary alongside Zimmerman and hopefully a healthy and improved Hartman. The LBs are super athletic and if Brandon Harold can improve his motor then the defense might not be half bad.

Spring games are notorious for building unwarranted optimism, but I’m starting to further believe this could be a pretty successful season.

I have a feeling the Klein Bandwagon will be filling up now.

Credit where credit's due, KSB, you have the earned the right as Frank would say

to drive the bandwagon. And even better yesterday was Klein barely ran. We already know he’s very good at doing that so with improved throwing ability he’s a true dual threat.

What was good to see is that Klein looked like a guy who can be a starter in the Big 12. It will be the first time in the Snyder Part 2 era we aren’t stuck with a QB who everyone knows shouldn’t be starting in major college football.

Tuggle was disappointing. Expected him to be better than he was. I worried that Klein being the #1 was more a sign of Tuggle not being good than Klein being a good QB. But if the spring game is any indication (which based on history it may not really be), it might be more a function of Klein actually being pretty damn good.

Thompson looks like he is 100%. Brod maybe has a bit further to go. Harper with a tremendous catch in the end zone to finish the game. He seems ready to take the next step. Absolutely loved the new WR corps hand shake celebration schtick. Recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it to check out the highlights. Made me laugh first time I saw.

That celebration

is rather amusing…no more penalties for salutes i guess :-P

by jtarkman on May 1, 2011 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions

FWIW

I never thought Klein was destined to be bad, just that he didn’t show enough last season to warrant starting over Coffman. The problem I had with him was that he was too timid when making decisions on throwing the ball, not necessarily that he couldn’t actually throw the ball. That is obviously something that you can easily work on and improve.

Now, I also though that Tuggle was going to be much better, but I would much rather have a guy that has put into this system and paid his dues already over a transfer starting.

But I will give you credit for standing by your man ;-) even when it wasn’t popular, just as I will continue to stand by my stance on Coffman last year even if Klein ends up being the best college QB ever. I’m nothing if not obstinate.

Winter is coming, but Summer will rip your jugular out if you step out of line.

It still makes me sick that Snyder refused to take off Klein's handcuffs last season.

It’s flat impossible that he improved THIS much simply from spring practice.

And thanks for your notes. I'm traveling and didn't get to see the game,

so the only thing I’d seen were the raw stats.

I was actually at the game...

and I agree with the above. The defense is maybe a piece or two (missing safeties?) from being decently solid, and the offense looks like it could be very explosive. It was obvious the defense worked on stopping the run, even though our RB’s looked solid and still got a few yards, they were met by multiple defenders every time they got past the line. the only blemish on the run defense was that long TD run by Hubert, who I think just got lucky.
And yes, the score was flipped making it seem closer than it was, but it did give us a chance to see how the team would operate playing from behind (yeah, last year was the same, but the White defense this year was actually not bad…)

I think the D is missing linemen more than anything else

Sure, help anywhere else (except maybe LB now, if they’re well coached) would be appreciated, but the line is where last years team was a mess, and I don’t know if this team will be any better.

It will be better.

Meshak is a revelation. Between him, Davis, an angry Harold and a lights-out crazy Voelker, we might actually have a pass rush again.

DT is a little more of a question mark. Guidry is legit, still not sure about Kibble. Boyd did nothing. Need to see Lutui, Seau and Tillman before I feel a little better there.

Linebackers are night and day better, even with the injuries. Cornerback could be more of a position of strength than I thought going in, but safety looks like more of a concern. Call it a wash.

So long as Davis is healthy

I do not remember him at all from the game, I don’t know if he played or not.

I loved the ending.

Sure, it wasn’t a real game, but it still felt like there was pressure to perform. Snyder had to LOVE that situational work with a crowd watching expectantly.

I spend the last 5 minutes screaming for Harper to get some balls thrown his way, once I realized that of him, Brodrick, Sheldon, Tramaine, Hubert and B. Brown, he was the only one who hadn’t scored.

Then he dropped the one in the end zone, which was identical to the TD he caught against North Texas, and I just groaned. But they went right back to him, he made a spectacular catch, and me and the rest of the crowd went nuts. Best ending to a spring game ever.

by BracketCat on May 1, 2011 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

The only thing i noticed

Bracket, was that I think Voelker may have the nod over Harold right now, as he did play the whole game with Purple, and Harold played with White, but I bet it’s close.

by jtarkman on May 1, 2011 1:54 PM CDT reply actions

Maybe motivation for Harold?

Mr. No-motor might need a kick in the pants.

That would be where the wild-assed speculation comes in.

I just can’t believe that Harold is permanently frozen out of the position, no matter what his issues.

He looked so good in the second half that I thoroughly expect his “benching” woke him up a bit.

He’ll be right in the thick of things. All things being equal, he’s the superior athlete. This is more about motivation and consistency, two things Snyder preaches above all else.

by BracketCat on May 1, 2011 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

and I didnt mean that I thought it was frozen this way. But Snyder has shown he’s willing to put desire over talent, so i think Voelker is a step ahead there. And i also agree, with you and Sean T that it may just be a motivational tool to get Harold to work harder

So where was DeMarcus Robinson all day?

Did he fall into that category of like Hrebec and such?

"Nor yet in Dell?"

by GTcat on May 2, 2011 12:34 PM CDT reply actions

He had a couple of carries.

Nothing noteworthy. For whatever reason, be it Snyder’s doghouse, injury, or not living up to the hype, Robinson appears to be a clear #4 in the RB depth chart.

I liked what we saw out of Robert Rose. The guy is tiny, but runs real hard. Could be a good return specialist too.

WeePo v2.0?

I’ll take it.
