K-State Slate: 4.15.11
Austin Meek muses on the football team's swag, Frank Martin's brain-to-mouth filter, and other items.
Josh Selby is officially going pro.
Not strictly K-State sports related, but University President Kirk Schulz tweeted yesterday that $40 million was included in the federal budget for NBAF.
Doc Sadler got a raise and extension from Tom Osborne. I'll let ol' Doc take it from here:
"I didn't question anything," Sadler said Thursday. "Maybe that's not real smart, but that's the trust I have in Coach.
"I’m not into this ‘New Age.’ If you get caught up in how much money you’re making, that shouldn’t be the focus."
Frank Martin would love to work for Osborne.

The really sad part about the Doc Sadler extension ...
Is that I think there is a pretty sizeable part of that fanbase that is happy about it.
I’m ecstatic. I cannot wait for the conference game box scores involving NU next year.
Wisconsin @ Nebraska? Oh. My. God.

A raise and extension for Doc? Good lord…

an extension for a coach that does not have a winning conference record, interesting idea.
Since Doc said the B1G is better in basketball than the Big12, does that mean he will lose more games?
I really won’t pay attention to UN-L, but it will be interesting to look at the results over the next couple/three years.

It's happening.
I’m convinced the football team is going to be good this coming season, Cosh and all. Anyone with me?
No.

I'm with you but id just like to hear more humility...more Snyder style
I really think our D will be very good though!

I'm on board - I've got a vat of Kool-Aid prepped and ready for consumption.
Of course I feel that way every year, even though if we match last years record that will indicate a vastly improved team.

I've said it once, I'll say it again
As bad as we were on D last year, switching to a 4-3, addition of Bryce Brown, moving Lamur to LB as we add Burns at safety, and word on the street Adam Davis is available possibly on DL this year…
surely we can only go up in that department from 2010 right? I’m not talking light years but still. We should be pretty solid across the board both sides of the ball. Will be interesting to see how everyone comes back from injury at WR. Hopefully not as slow as Hartmann came off of his injury.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Bryce is the RB
Arthur’s the LB. My main concern (aside from incompetent coaching) is the DL. Sure Davis might be good, but who else do the Cats have?

Swag? from Garrett?
Let’s not get too cocky before winning some games guys. I like that they are confident but Bryce and Authur can’t change the world overnight. Garrett needs to watch some defensive game tape from last year I think…
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
Garrett was our best defensive player last year...
Kid can play. And swag would be a good thing IMO. Sick of seeing the slumped shoulders after getting slashed last few seasons.
No doubt Garrett is good
but when your defense was 119th last year, I expect some humility. I just don’t want them to think anything will be easy.

No David, you're misunderstanding what swag means
Swag (from dictionary.com)–noun
1. a suspended wreath, garland, drapery, or the like, fastened up at or near each end and hanging down in the middle; festoon.
2. a wreath, spray, or cluster of foliage, flowers, or fruit.
3. a festoon, especially one very heavy toward the center.
4. a swale.
5. a swaying or lurching movement.
The word you’re looking for is swagger -
–verb (used without object)
1. to walk or strut with a defiant or insolent air.
2. to boast or brag noisily.
–verb (used with object)
3. to bring, drive, force, etc., by blustering.
–noun
4. swaggering manner, conduct, or walk; ostentatious display of arrogance and conceit.

Never mind, Sean just sucked all my Kool-Aid down and I am left an empty shell.
I guess dictionary definitons just have that effect on me…no wonder Balderdash was never my favorite (albeit a good game).

Sean you are using the wrong dictionary, especially in the 'twitter' age
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=swag
Swag 1494 up, 326 down
buy swag mugs, tshirts and magnets
The way in which you carry yourself. Swag is made up of your overall confidence, style, and demeanor. Swag can also be expanded to be the reputation of your overall swagger. You gain swag, or “Swag up”, by performing swag worthy actions that improve this perception. A person can also “swag down,” by being an overall pussy and garnering negative swag for their actions. Swag is a subtle thing that many strive to gain but few actually attain. It is reserved for the most swagalicious of people. Swag can also be quantified, with point systems existing in some circles of friends.
“I got with two girls last night”
“Awesome dude, that’s some swag”
“I think one of them was my sister though…”
“Negative swag”
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care. (#739)
I contend that I'm using exactly the right dictionary, particularly during this twitterification of American
I hate thru, u, 4, 2, lol, rofl, 1337 and all the rest of the garbage. American is a beautiful language, so why not keep it that way and use it properly? Spelling isn’t that hard (but I probably mispelled something typing this myself), and neither is using the full word.

"Swag" IS a "full word", though, Sean.
It’s just slang—kind of like “twitterification”, and calling the English language “American.” Irony is fun.

I don't think I'm calling English American, I'm calling what we speak American! It's a derivative of English yes, but if Top Gear has taught me anything, it's that we have a different language.

True, but we have better spelling, and we don't confuse a name with that of a semi!

ebosshoops Eric Bossi
Per email release from Anthony Ray of Azpreps, freshman Royce Woolridge is transferring from Kansas.
ebosshoops Eric Bossi
Another source has also confirmed Woolridge is looking to transfer.
imo ... I wanted him to stay ...
It’s good for Self to have to reload from the losses of Morris A, Morris B, and Josh Selby (I think he would have been a solid backcourt scorer next year, at least). Would have liked to have seen Thomas Robinson leave.
Guys like Royce Woolridge, I have no worry about taking up a scholarship on ku’s roster. So, I’ll be sad to see him go.
Please stay, Royce.
Jeff Withey … don’t even think about transferring.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Apr 15, 2011 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Wow, they have seven scholarships to fill.
Actually, eight, since one was given to Connor Teahan … just because.
Everyone’s freaking out that Mizzou has zero commits for three spots, but I think KU is in an even worse position. There’s just no way to land seven or eight solid players at this late of date. Their depth will be supremely challenged this season.
We will add one more decent guy at least
And it doesn’t matter, we already have our rotation for next year. We won’t be great, but we haven’t had a down season in a long time, so yeah… we’ll see what happens. I’ll sacrifice an average-sorta good year next year for a shot at awesomeness down the road
However, you are off on the scholarship part. Our position isn’t bad, its outstanding. The 2012 recruiting class is absolutely loaded. As of now we have one four star big and thats it. Now Self can go out and go after pretty much everyone. Bill Self with 5-6 scholarships for a loaded class? Check please.
With Self’s recruiting history and success, I’d be terrified as an opposing fan. Last time he had this many scholarships, he had the following recruiting classes:
Russell Robinson, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun, CJ Giles
And then
Brandon Rush, Mario Chalmers, Julian Wright, Micah Downs
Even though Giles was kicked out and Downs left (was never playing ahead of Rush), they were still really highly recruited. And the other guys, well you know what happened…
As a KU fan, I’m pumped. We are likely swapping a guy who was never going to play much for a potential quality four year guy and maybe even a star. I have confidence Self will use all the openings well and restock the roster with talent. There is nothing about the last 10 years that suggests to me otherwise

I'm not.
I am predicting a 10-8 league record for them.
(What can I say? I must enjoy getting kicked in the nuts every time they win another league championship.)

It'll be tough
But the league is going to be weaker next year, despite losing Nebraska and Colorado. Texas will be worse (losing two best players), Mizzou will be the same, you guys will be worse (IMHO, no Pullen, no Kelly…) Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are who they are, Tech will still be bad…
It’ll be close, I think a big cluster. KU has a murderous noncon schedule next year – Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA in the Maui. It is considered the most difficult tournament field ever apparently. Plus we have Ohio State and travel to USC. So we will find out pretty damn fast how good our team really is.

My serious prediction puts a "cluster" (as you put it) of about 4 teams
between 10-8 and 12-6. I think KU will be in that group of 4, and that next year is as good of a shot as anyone has yet had to unseat them.

Well, my first year at KU was 2004...
And the worst KU has finished in league play is 12-4 (that terrible first year). Won the league every year since. Throw in a national title to boot.
I can’t help but always be optimistic…

Plus, the lack of depth you mentioned may be beneficial down the road
Freshman like Ben Mclemore, Naadir Tharpe and Braedan Anderson will have to play and contribute, which is only going to be better for the team in the long run. Chalmers, Rush, RussRob, Collins etc all had to do the same their freshman and sophomore years and it really paid off for them. At least this way, quality guys aren’t sitting on the bench waiting (as has been the case lately for guys like Johnson, Releford, Withey…. hey that made ya laugh right)
