Matt Painter will remain at Purdue.

I jumped the gun by about 10 minutes, as it turned out. At the time, evidence appeared overwhelming in favor of Mizzou pulling this off. And then all hell broke loose.

All I can say right now, Missouri fans, is that I know how you feel.

You just experienced all the exhilaration I felt during the week Bob Huggins was hired and all the depression I felt the week he left — only for you, it was compressed into 24 hours. That, I cannot even imagine.

Keep your chins up. You'll get a good coach, I'm sure of it.

I know K. Scott Bailey might disagree, but if Matt Painter replaces Mike Anderson — as this report indicates will happen soon — I'm cool with Mizzou again for a while.

Like KSB, I soured on the whole Unholy Alliance concept this year and last as Mizzou's play became increasingly douchy and Anderson became increasingly intolerable.

But Painter is good people. He's like Frank Martin in a lot of ways, not least of which is coaching philosophy. Mizzou once again will defend.

If K-State ever is to have a hope of winning this conference, we need some other programs to step up their game and start beating KU, too. Painter will make Self's life hell, IMO.

And this is just horrible news for coaches such as Rick Barnes and Scott Drew, who are going to get exposed against Martin, Painter and Self twice a year now.

It's going to be hard to dislike Mizzou under Painter ...

unless he beats us 6 times in a row.

The conference is definitely better without M*****f***in’ Mike Anderson and his “Fastest M*****f***in’ Forty Minutes in Basketball” now that he’s taken his m*****f***in’ talents to South Ozarks.

Not so fast....

Curtis Kitchen just retweeted from @ESPN1450 that Matt Painter will remain as coach at Purdue. Man, Mizzou is starting to just look stupid in all this mess.

by Catfan33 on Mar 30, 2011 2:53 PM CDT reply actions

Yep ... I guess Katz and espn are now reporting that he's staying.

Wow … talk about getting your heart ripped out. Mizzou was lucky to be in the situation where a hire like Painter was possible (like KSU was with Huggins) … and for Mizzou fans to think it was a done deal and have it taken away … wow.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Mar 30, 2011 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

This is last week all over again.

When nothing is official, everything is news.

The Purdue sources say he’s staying at Purdue. The Mizzou sources say he’s leaving.

Last week, it was the exact same thing, except replace “Purdue” with “Arkansas” and “Painter” with “Anderson.”

Katz even reported nine days ago that Anderson would sign the extension and stay at Mizzou. Hell, Joe Schad reported 10 months ago that the Big 12 was breaking up.

Pardon me for not taking ESPN’s word for it. This thing is far from over.

Not necessarily

Twitter has filled the public’s need for immediate information. If they weren’t reporting it via Twitter, it would be via blog or Facebook or one of the other social media sites out there. Blaming the medium for bad information is incorrect.

Okay, now that I’m done being a journalist, I think part if it is the sources. Last week, Anderson was going to Arkansas, and then he wasn’t because Mizzou offered a big pay raise, then he was. I’m convinced that a lot of the coach wrangling this time of year and the “sources” who “say” what their next move is comes from the agents trying to negotiate a better bottom line for their client. Wonder if Painter’s going to get a new contract for staying at Purdue.

by Wenders on Mar 30, 2011 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

"Blaming the medium for bad information is incorrect."

A couple of problems with that. First off, several members of the media DID in fact forward bad information, which brings us to the second point. Once that bad info hit Twitter, it became fact. Everyone retweeted the same thing over and over until other media members started accepting it. So long as they said it was “from sources” they could cover their tracks. A few guys stood above the fray, but by and large the media comes off really badly in this entire mess.

"And this is just horrible news for coaches such as Rick Barnes and Scott Drew, who are going to get exposed against Martin, Painter and Self twice a year now."

I know KState has had a lot of success against Texas recently in seemingly every sport, but I don’t expect Barnes to be getting exposed by any of those coaches.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 30, 2011 3:05 PM CDT reply actions

Come on Texas, what keeps happening to Barnes?

He keeps getting exposed! UT beat KU in Lawrence (thank God), and UT own A&M, but this season was a mess after the early good times, just like last year. Barnes can recruit (but then, I could probably recruit okay to Austin) but he’s not proving to be a very good coach.

Overall it was a good season for Texas - much better than most prognosticators expected before the season.

The late season swoon and loss to Arizona were frustrating, but I think part of it was overachieving earlier in the season.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 30, 2011 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Hasn't he already been getting exposed?

For a few years now?

I think its the legivity and talent though

That feeds this notion. Barnes has been there what, 14 years now and has one final four and two other Elite 8’s? Plus like 8 first or second round exits. And after Kansas, his teams have easily had the second most talent over that span.

Then again, Barnes’ teams always finish in the top fourth of the league it seems like. I just think he gets the “exposed” label more than others because his teams always have talent and expectations, but he hasn’t had a lot of tourny success, and has lost in the Big 12 tournament finals what, 4 times now to Self in the last five years (which is kind of shocking)

I think you're right that it is the longevity (assuming that is what you meant by "legivity").

13 years just seems like a long time for a bball coach these days – even though a lot of the greats coached at least that long at a school before winning it all.

I just find it amusing that he has a very similar tournament record to Roy Williams in his first 13 years at Kansas, and yet he is seen as a huge underachiever. Maybe I just didn’t follow Kansas bball enough at the time and Roy Williams was getting questioned as a huge underachiever as well.

I think the grumble with Roy was

couldn’t win the big one. But Roy did make more final fours and two title games.

KU fans had the notion with Roy that “he is close, he is GOING to win a title. Hes gotten so damn close”

I don’t think Texas fans every feel that way with Barnes, and I think that is the difference.

Williams only made 2 final fours (one to the finals) in his first 13 years at KU (and one elite eight).

So he does have one extra final four (although one less elite eight) – so basically two games better.

He went out in the first or second round 5 times (compared to Barnes’ seven times).

I guess I don’t see the resumes as being much different – especially considering Roy Williams was at a basketball powerhouse in Kansas and Rick Barnes was taking over a Texas team that hadn’t been to a final four since the 40s.

Zero conference or conference tournament championships with that talent = exposed, IMO.

by BracketCat on Mar 31, 2011 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh - I guess I just don't really care because I think tournament conference championships are silly.

That and the tournament is generally in Kansas – so it’s practically a home game for Kansas.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 31, 2011 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Really it's in Missouri, not Kansas :p

But it is still very much a home game(s) for KU, or KSU, or MU, or maybe even ISU. But then the Big 12 title games were mainly in Dallas which made them home games for OU too. Well, and UT, once or twice.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be in Kansas City - I don't actually care.

I don’t really care that much about the tournament and I don’t live close enough to any location they might have it in to actually go.

I was just pointing out that being Kansas in Kansas (or on the border of Kansas) is pretty difficult to do. We did it for the first time ever this year – I didn’t exactly expect it to happen twice.

OK, reports are flooding in now that he's staying at Purdue.

Wow.

Columbia media are 0 for 2 this month. Major egg on the face.

It would have been better for Alden if it hadn’t leaked out, because I think as of this morning Mizzou fans were starting to fall in love with the idea. And now the rug has been pulled out on what was a long shot hire to begin with.
