RPI WATCH: 3/3/2011
Kind of a boring night, really.
Duke dispatched Clemson on Senior Night to set up a monster showdown Saturday with North Carolina, but no other non-conference opponents played Wednesday night.
I'll probably discuss the Big 12 outcomes in BIG 12 OUTLOOK later this week, since all three games proceeded exactly as predicted.

Stupid Mizzou.
The Tigers fell to 31 in the RPI, depriving us of a signature win.
Guess I have to root for them to beat the Hawks now.
I'm rooting for them to beat the Hawks regardless.
If the Hawks lose and Texas wins then Texas should still be the 1 seed and I’d much rather be on their side of the bracket than the Evil doers from Lawrence
Now that we're in (unofficially)
Does it matter how many top-30 wins we have?

To a degree...
I think having more signature wins will help us potentially get a better seed depending on how we do in the Big XII Tournament
Can't a guy just be happy with dancing?
…in the basketball sense…not that there’s anything wrong with that…

Absolutely... I'm happy that we are, but not satisfied.
It’s like after we beat KU, I was happy, but not satisfied with where we were at. We still had a lot of work to do, and I think we still have a lot of work to do this season as well.

Happy with just dancing as well
That’s what I expect. But we have such a good base to build off of now, to really help ourselves out in the long run. The higher the seed the better chance of opening in Tulsa and having a good crowd.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I'd like to think that as a program, we have slightly higher expectations than that.
That attitude was fine in 2008, but this will be our third appearance in four years, we consider ourselves something of a basketball school, and we like to think we’re a rival to one of the greatest college BB programs of all time.
It’s time to start thinking about what it will take to get to our fifth Final Four (which would be five more than Mizzou). Seeding plays a huge role in that.
New ESPN power rankings are out...
Andy Katz and Doug Gottlieb appear to be very high on KSU as they have them #9. Some people still didnt put KSU in their top 25….. Dumb@$$’s.

This, among other things, is why I can't respect Dick Vitale.

Dick Vitale was a mediocre (at best) coach, who used his over-the-top lunacy to build a career he's done nothing to earn.

Hyperbole much?
The guy works as hard as anyone at promoting the college game. Is he annoying? Yes. That doesn’t mean you can say he’s done “nothing to earn” where he’s at.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball...Rock Chalk Talk
He's watched -- and yelled about -- a lot of college basketball games.
And the franchise he “promotes” the best is the franchise of Dick Vitale. As a basketball commentator, he’s not fit to carry the gym bag of a guy like Bilas, yet he’s more famous than him. Why? Because he’s all about self-promotion and being bombastic. I’ve got NO patience for d-bags like Vitale.

Although, to be fair, Bilas left us off his ballot as well.
Maybe if we had beat Duke last November they’d be giving us a little more respect… LOL
I was talking more about their acumen at their chosen profession.
Apparently neither of them are very good at gauging what teams are playing the best right now.

I'm with Warden
I think he’s pretty annoying…but Vitale is great for college bball. Plus all the money he’s helped raise for cancer research. I wouldn’t call him a D-bag myself.

Not in the Top 25 are you kidding me?
#1, #20 and #9 and no respect? Talk about under educated basketball pundits.

My understanding of
“Power Rankings” is that they are meant to show who is playing the best right now. While the whole body of work goes into that determination, a “power ranking” is supposed to be different from the AP/ESPN poll (which mainly looks at the season as a whole, coupled with who you beat/lost). “Power rankings” then, are supposed to convey rankings for teams with streaks, wins over other highly ranked teams.
For instance, George Mason is currently riding a 15 game win streak, and even though they’re in a WEAK conference, they certainly would meet the requirements for being included (because, lets face it…15 game win streaks don’t happen very often and you have to be playing “good enough” basketball). On the opposite side, Villanova has lost 5 of its last 7, but is still being given votes, some as high as 19 (and they have losses to Providence and Rutgers. Seriously…Rutgers.)
I think what I’m trying to say is that power rankings don’t measure up to their stated goal, and end up being a popularity contest based upon perceived conference strength and wins that occurred early in the season. In that way, they really are no different from the weekly polls. And I suspect the reason we aren’t receiving a whole lot of respect is because those analysts are probably still stuck in the “K-State-is-a-disappointment-and-I-really-dislike-that-Frank-Martin-guy-yelling-at-his-players-and-Pullen-shouldn’t-have-dissed-the-NIT-and-my-parents-were-right-I-am-a-disappointment” meme.
I’ll step off the soap box now.

Here Here
That was the point I was trying to make Monday. Power are a “right now” snapshot of the season. KSU is playing some of the best basketball in the nation RIGHT NOW and deserve to be in the top 10 of any power rankings. Seeing how we dismantled KU, MU and took it to UT in the Drum in a 14 day span I can’t imagine someone not ranking us at all…blows my mind.
Exactly.
The “Power Rankings” are just an example of faulty nomenclature.
