Frank Discusses His Reaction to Reporter's Question
I'm not going to mention the name of the reporter who asked the poorly worded question that upset Jake and Frank after the Wisconsin game; if you're more than a casual follower of KSU athletics, you've already heard who it is, and you're aware of his body of work. But Frank responded to the criticism he received on CBS College Sports with their studio team.
Ultimately, I agree with Frank Martin 100%. It wasn't that the question was asked; it was how the question was asked. What makes a good reporter is the ability to ask the right question, the right way, at the right time. You must have the ability to read the person and the moment. In this instance, that reporter did a very poor job at both.
Frank Martin was right for responding the way he did. I wholeheartedly support his reaction and feel his explanation was very poised, forthright, and diplomatic. I'm very proud to call Frank Martin our coach, and a lot of that is due to examples like this one.

interesting
Never have seen the question and response, just this reaction.
About my only response is that HCFM is intelligent, and glad he’s part of the K-State family.

He's a "big picture" guy.
He knows how to walk the fine line of defending his players and promoting his brand.

I vote that, going forward, we refer to that reporter as "The Douche Who Must Not Be Named."

I'm not going to go that far.
I’m not a fan of his work. I never have been. He has a snarky tone, and my observation/opinion is that he thinks he’s much more intelligent/witty than he really is. When he does normal beat reporting, it’s dull and bland, and when he attempts to be humorous or “edgy” it comes off as insulting because he doesn’t have a knack for it.
That’s why I’m not really of the opinion that he was out to insult Jake, personally. I just don’t think he has the skills necessary to read people and ask the appropriate questions because he simply lacks the appropriate ‘toolbox’ to do so. I think he wanted to try the ‘hard hitting’ journalist thing, and it didn’t work because he’s not really made for that. He’s more of a technical writer. He lacks the personality and skill to be much more than that.

Great Point.
I have always found his work to be dry for a supposed beat writer. I really do not need any sunshine blown at me 24/7 but his reporting is nothing short of dull. Maybe his lack of passion for our institution is part of the root cause but frankly he just does not seem to be the right person for the job IMHO.

When you can't stand the institution that you're a beat writer for,
it probably makes it hard to write with any passion about them. The guy’s a douche, for sure, but the papers who hired him are worse.

It obviously helps that Frank had a week to digest the aftermath of the question,
but his explanation here is inarguable. TDWMNBN asked an appropriate question in a wholly insulting manner. If it had been asked more respectfully then Frank probably wouldn’t have interjected in the manner he did (although I tend to believe Frank justifiably was probably going to react more negatively to whatever that specific reporter asked).
Glad to see Frank getting a chance to tell his side. And I think the issue ends here. Now, getting a new beat reporter…
Side note: glad someone stepped in and commandeered Frank’s fashion choices before he appeared on the show. Still need to figure out who was responsible for the hat three sizes too large on his Rome appearance.
Hats are a gray area...
A lot of guys don’t know how to wear a hat, or it looks goofy on them.
Frank is usually a pretty stylish guy. Hell, he can even pull off the cowboy boots with a suit. But hats…well, it’s really hard for any guy over forty to pull off a hat unless it’s been a part of your everyday wardrobe for years. My dad is like that. He always wears hats, so he knows how to get one with a good fit, he knows how to break it in, etc.

That was a good discussion.
It seems to me that the correct way to ask the question would have been something like, “Jacob, obviously the important thing to you right now is that you guys didn’t win, and that’s occupying most of your thoughts. At the same time, you had a great game, and you broke the school’s all-time scoring record. Do you have any feelings about that yet?”
It’s just as likely to get a “no, man, I don’t care about that” answer… but it also leaves open the possibility Jake might pause and reflect for a moment, and offer something other than the obvious. At the same time, it’s respectful, and that one little three-letter word at the end of the question demonstrates some level of comprehension of what’s going down on the part of the questioner.
My new blog: Those Other Guys. Critiques welcome.
I loved Frank's last point at the end...
why is it OK for media members to write whatever they want…and go on with the day….but if someone stands up and say something against the media…holy hell shit hits the fan. It’s stupid. Glad Frank mentioned that.
Great post. Thank you so much for sharing.
I love Lappas’ agreeing with Coach, and I also loved how he and Alaa both basted that inept sonovabitch for his question. I do think Frank was a little disrespectful in his interjection, but that’s also defending his player.

I don't think it was disrespectful at all.
TheDoucheWhoMustNotBeNamed asked the question in a way that seemed, at the time, to be designed to completely twist the knife in Jake.
