RPI WATCH: 3/2/2011

Proving once again that misery loves company, success begets complacency and Virginia Tech is a bubble natural, the Hokies let Boston College march into Cassell Coliseum and go all Colorado on them.

Suffering the inevitable letdown from beating a No. 1 team and rushing the court (last year's Texas-to-Oklahoma State transition, anyone?), VPI gave up the sweep to the Eagles and knocked themselves right back to their usual bubble position heading into Saturday's crucial game at Clemson.

It just can't ever be easy for Seth Greenberg, can it?

Baylor also saw its bubble pop Tuesday night.

I must admit that I felt a sick sense of satisfaction as LaceDarius Dunn failed to score in double figures for the first time in 32 games and thus failed once again to break the all-time Big 12 scoring record.

In typical DPD* fashion, he forced up all kinds of crappy shots in an attempt to get the record over and done with.

And in typical Baylor fashion, the Bears once again set back team basketball seven grades in yet another road stinker.

Finally, Loyola's season mercifully ended with a first-round ejection from the Horizon League postseason, while Savannah State improved its mood with another road win and Missouri let its NCAA seed slip with another road flop.

Can we quit this bullshit?

We bitch and moan about KU fans with their Allen Fieldhouse West crap – why is this ok doing it to Texas?

Surgeon General's Warning: K-State-Mizzou basketball may increase the risk of high blood pressure. Please consult your doctor prior to watching any of these games.

Well, whether we like it when KU does it, they certainly have a valid case

I don’t really mind myself when KU fans say that, because until very recently, it has been true.

And it is OK to do this to Texas because they are a bunch of selfish jerks who could care less about the “Lost 5” or whatever it was they called us schools that were left out in the cold during conference re-alignment.

This is just harmless teasing.

We do? I don't like it, but I can't argue with it.

Just like I can’t argue with this. I’m with crispy on this.

It's just like anything KU, KSU related.

I get pissed when KU fans are jackasses on my facebook wall, either when KSU loses, or KU wins* their 19th Helms/Conference title. But after we win several in a row, or KU loses….and what do I see on my wall…KSU fans being jackasses. I mean, it’s just something that won’t end. Back and forth, back and forth.

I've always been of the mind that if we don't like it, DO something about it.

And lately, we HAVE been starting to make it so that Bramlage isn’t Allen West. I take the same view of Texas. If they don’t like, do something about it. And I also agree with those who say it’s pretty much just harmless teasing.

Sorry this is an hour late.

I lost track of time at work.

Of course, one side benefit of that is that I published with the updated RPIs for once.

How does RPI figure in to how you compare a team from this year versus last year?

Wasn’t last year’s squad always in the top 10 of RPI, while this one is just outside the top 20?

RPI and last year's team

To Sean T’s question:
One way to answer this is to post the RPI formula. I got this from Yahoo but the source is Wikipedia, so don’t let your professors know or they will not consider it legit.

My way of providing a Simple answer is that there is no way to compare last year’s team with this year’s team in RPI for anything other than a subjective comparison (if even that) because all of opponents and their opponents are completely different from year to year. Not sure if this is what you’re asking though Sean.

Here’s from Yahoo:
Ratings Percentage Index
The basic formula for computing the RPI is 25% of a team’s own winning percentage or WP, 50% percent average opponents winning percentage or OWP, and 25% average opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage or OOWP.

The following is the formula for computing a team’s own win percentage; 1.4 times the number of road wins plus neutral court wins plus .6 times the number of home wins. The teams loses are computed in the reverse; .6 times the number of road wins plus neutral court wins plus 1.4 times the number of home wins. The two numbers are then divided to obtain the RPI win percentage for a team.

Confusing, huh?

Thanks very much. And welcome to BOTC.

I like RPI because it isn’t subjective (except in the universally applied coefficients), so I was wondering if it is possible to say this year’s team is better than last year’s because the scalps are bigger, but the losses are bigger too. Short answer is no, long answer is maybe. Thanks again.

Dunn's girlfriend was dumb enough to break her jaw on his fist

Dunn was suspended for 30 seconds for her stupidity, but he also gets a nickname too. I prefer Jawbreaker myself (which the students chanted at the BU vs KSU game), but DPD works too.

I don't know about anyone else ...

But I’m not giving A&M the season finale vs Texas Tech.

By the way … what in the world is the selection committee going to do with BYU? First game post-Davies and they are getting trucked by Los Lobos in Provo.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Mar 2, 2011 10:01 PM CST reply actions

Depends on what they do the rest of the season.

If they right the ship in the Mountain West tournament, I think they can still keep a 2 seed.

by AMS on Mar 2, 2011 10:06 PM CST up reply actions

Personally, I wouldn't have placed them higher than a 3-seed BEFORE the Davies thing happened.

After? I wouldn’t put them above a 4- or 5-seed tops. They are a product of the Mountain West schedule. The bad teams in the MWC are AWFUL, and the middle of the road teams not much better. Make them run a KU/KU, Mizzou/Mizzou, K-State/@K-State, @Texas, Baylor, @Texas A&M gauntlet and see how they come out.

Just hold still with BYU

I hope they stay where they are, and us where we are in the latest Lunardi addition of bracketology

Oh, I think they'll get a 3-seed, no matter what happens.

I was just saying what I think they actually DESERVE.
