BIG 12 TOURNAMENT OUTLOOK: 03.10.11 (Open Game Thread)

Do not adjust your television set. Yes, he actually wore a suit for once.

Well, yesterday's game thread seemed to be a smashing success in the sense that it let me entertain myself with the twisted rambling of all you heathens when I was bored during tournament timeouts, so let's do it again.

Rather than double up, let's just use this as the open game thread for K-State, too, with the understanding that someone (not me) might have to post a second-half thread if things get too hectic.

Previews and discussion after the jump.

Star-divide

KansasOklahomaState

11:30 a.m. (ESPN2): No. 1 Kansas vs. No. 9 Oklahoma State

Well, I didn't even have the Pokes going this far, so game effort, I guess. I don't really expect them to offer the Jayhawks any opposition, especially in what will be a hostile arena.

KansasStateColorado

2 p.m. (Big 12 Network): No. 4 Kansas State vs. No. 5 Colorado

We better do to the Buffaloes what we did to Oklahoma State last year. I'm talking about some righteous, Jamar Samuels-fueled payback.

TexasOklahoma

6 p.m. (Big 12 Network): No. 2 Texas vs. No. 10 Oklahoma

As with OSU, kudos to Oklahoma for making it this far. Jeff Capel might save his job after all. But Texas is an entirely different animal from Baylor. Although I think the Sooners might gave the Longhorns a game for a while, don't expect an OU win under any circumstances.

TexasAMMissouri

8:30 p.m. (ESPN2): No. 3 Texas A&M vs. No. 6 Missouri

I don't know what to make of this game. Entering the tournament, I thought Mizzou would take care of Texas Tech and Texas A&M fairly easily. aTm hasn't impressed me in more than a month.

But that was before I saw Mizzou sleepwalk its way to a win last night. Make no mistake, the Tigers were lucky to get a victory after appearing hell-bent on coughing it up. I think tonight's contest is anyone's to take and probably will come down to the last possession.

well...

I can agree with the concept of what they wrote, the logic in the article was not supported by facts. It was basically a vent on how Baylor is treated differently than other schools.

I’d argue that K-State was treated in the same manner as Baylor, while KU had more warning in their case. But why were these schools treated differently than OSU and Auburn? Similar circumstances but different enforcement. And then there is USC, shouldn’t they have the same penalties as the other football schools?

Selective enforcement and arbitrary penalties is what I’m seeing.

Yeah, that was incoherent at best

They clearly aren’t looking at the situation objectively, especially since they grouped KSU in with schools getting ‘special’ treatment. Don’t know how our treatment was any different than theirs.

That's an embarrassing post.

So Baylor should get an automatic bid since Jones was suspended? I really don’t understand his complaint about KState. Curt and Jake were suspended immediately. They didn’t get special treatment at all. And unless Baylor was going to win three more games (unlikely) the punishment is actually less than Jake’s (and particularly since they’ve had this info for a little while now). The comparison should be to Newton and the OSU guys.

Also, can’t tell if it’s a joke or not, but if not then it’s pretty hilarious he invoked Ken Starr as someone who should stand up for Baylor equality. Must not read the news much.

That article reeks of insecurity and lack of knowledge

with a hint of Nebraska “conspiracy theory” snydrome. The comparison to K-State is so weak it’s alarming on how much the author pays attention. You can make an argument for the Ohio State and Auburn cases, but the K-State one? It’s the exact same thing you schmuck. It just so happens our incident occured earlier than yours.

I keep reading "it's really hard to beat a talented team 3 times"

I can’t come up with anything but the women’s win over ISU yesterday that supports that argument. KU was 3-0 against KSU last year (and many times before that), and UT hasn’t had any trouble with their south foes, so I think that statement is just another sports cliche.

Do you guys know of any cases where it’s actually true that a team that lost twice in the regular season wins in the post season?

One very famous one is that KSU and OU had both beaten KU twice in 1988,

and then lost to them in the NCAA tournament.

Sorry, wrong Scott

In 1988, Cats- Hawks had split regular season games. We beat KU in the post season tourney, thus going 2-1 for the season, to THAT point. We lost the FOURTH frickin time we played them at the elite 8 level. To this day I say that in 1988, we were a slightly better team than KU, who won the Nat/Title.

We beat them handily in the tourney.

Richmond went off for 35 in Lawrence, and I think we just squeeked by in Allen, and I think Ahearn was a nailbiter too. I was living in S.C. at the time, so I can’t remember it as well as some years. I came back for one last game in Ahearn (it was the OU game, Sooners were ranked #1 or #2, and we beat them). The last game in Ahearn was against MU. Breaks my heart, but I couldn’t make that game. I flew back to Kansas for watch parties the weekend of the sweet 16 win over Purdue and the loss to KU in Detroit.

That's skewed by the fact that MOST teams who win the first two are head and shoulders better.

The whole point of the meme, though, is that it’s hard for a team to beat another team with whom it’s fairly evenly matched 3 straight times.

It's easy to forget all the times ...

That two talented teams split the first two meetings before having a bumper match.

When looking at it through the context of all occasions where two talented teams have met 3 times in a season and one team swept all three … it’s pretty tough to do.

One thing I know … it’s going to be a sonofabitch for CU to do that today.

There are big factors on KSU's side leading into this game vs the previous two ...

Game 1: Old, frontcourt-dominated, static, putrid “offense”. No Curtis Kelly.

Game 2: Road game. Still working into the new offense. Lost by 0.1 seconds anyway.

Game 3: “Neutral” court. Team is completely comfortable with new offense. Full roster.

I think if we can avoid a heinous shooting performance, we’ll be fine.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Mar 10, 2011 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

Personally, I think more than any other reason

(to me) this cliche exists because of simple odds/probabilites…

Typically, most sporting events are 50/50 (meaning simply two sides with only two outcomes – Team A wins or Team B wins… Don’t think soccer on this one.) outcomes. However, history has proven that it is possible to judge which team is more likely to win – hence odds on games. Also, history has proven that odds are not fact and not always right – hence gambling on games/odds. However, even the most overmatched foe in the same conference with another team usually is given at least a 20% (and FREQUENTLY higher than that) of winning the game. If you take even the most overmatched teams this year – arguably KU v. ISU – and use probability to determine the likelihood of a KU-W, KU-W, KU-W outcome it yields the following:

Presuming atKU = 90% KU win prob, atISU = 70% KU win prob, and neutral = 80% KU win prob (as an example)…

KU Sweep = 50.4% likely and ISU Sweep = 0.6% likely (if all 3 games are still undecided)…

Taking the KSU/CU series this season yields (with win% from Kenpom pre-game occurring…):

Game 1: 76% KSU-W… CU wins.
Game 2: 51% KSU-W… CU wins.
Game 3: 67% KSU-W… TBD.

“Pre-season” probability of CU-CU-CU = 7.8% with those game ‘odds’.

To keep the post short-ish, I’ll leave it at that. However, I can go on quite a spiel about why the “hard to beat a team 3-times in a season” is the odds-on favorite to almost always be true due to simple odds/probabilities and considering real-life situations. :-)

As the Anti-Scott Drew, I present you with Mike Rice, Rutgers head basketball coach.

He had the following things to say about the horrid officiating that cost his team a chance at the win over St. John’s:

You can’t control what happens to you all the time, you just can’t. Whether it’s a bad call, our zone defense, whatever, it’s not how you respond. In the Big East, (officials Tim) Higgins, (Jim) Burr, (Earl) Walton are all really good, veteran guys and you have to trust they made the right judgment decision and if they didn’t it’s part of the game. We could have done stuff like not shooting 35 percent in the first half of the game."

I like my job. I’m a first-year coach. I’m certainly not going to question some of the best referees in the country, their judgment or their decisions. So you just be humble and understand where you are, your place in the Big East. I’m sure some of the more veteran coaches in Big East would have made maybe a bigger stink, but that’s not the way I feel on that right now.

I would have loved to have the 1.7 seconds back, I’m not going to lie, but (officials) make mistakes. They make mistakes and you’ve just got to move forward. I’ve gotten calls from all three referees. I’ve had them numerous times and they’re really good referees and they’re really good people. It’s just one of those things where I wish for my seniors, who might not even play in the pros or go overseas, guys who are just going to get jobs, I wish that didn’t have to be their lasting memory of their college career. But, like I said, it is what it is and you move forward.

Fine, give me more observations that prove me wrong.

The first time I remember hearing the phrase “it’s too hard to beat a good team X times in a season” was before the 2000 Big 12 championship game. You know what? OU won. The NFL playoffs are the same thing. Titans beat the Jags twice in the regular season, then in the playoffs too. The 42-23 that WW told us is also an indictment of that cliche.

I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom. - General George S. Patton

by Sean T on Mar 10, 2011 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

He already showed you the probabilities, when two teams are relatively evenly-matched.

And as a coach, I absolutely HATED seeing a solid team that we’d beaten twice for the third time. And the 42-23 tells us exactly nothing. It’s not hard to beat a BAD team 3 times in one year, or even a team that is good, but that you’re significantly better than. That figure incorporates both of those.

I still intend sometime near future to dig up some 2-0, 3rd game rematch in the post-season results from the last 10 years or so… Might even end up seeing a sort of trend where a team that breaks the 2-0 in the post-season has some sort of greater than others did success in the tourney – you never know. CU is 14th nationally in ppg

and 19th in adjusted offensive efficiency – so they are pretty good at offense. I didn’t see the game other than GameCast so tough to judge effort, but effort is not always accurately measurable by %’s – it frequently needs the eye-test.

Perhaps in this case both ways point to lack of effort, but I am not yet dismissing it as such just due to CU’s percentages for the game…

They shot a high % because many were break away layups, or sweet dishes off the

break away. They cleared one side of the floor and created mismatches. It was coaching, pure and simple, that gave CU many good looks, because Frank will not make defensive adjustments. He just says “now you gurad him.” So Burks lit it up in the 1st half, and Higgins did in the 2nd. The kids played hard; CU had a better scheme, and we did not adjust. 3-0 says a lot.

I’m glad I don’t take in sporting events with some members on this board. Perhaps maybe I did at one point, I’ve been known to call out idiot fans who I’m embarrassed wear my school color…more in my college days, but the guy who sits next to at my football season tickets can be a bit of a mad idiodic moron sometime, like the time a secondary person let up a pass play (it was the second of the day) and his response was “Snyder get him out of there, he’s been getting burned all day!!!!” like I said, it was only the second time there was a coverage breakdown, and the second time they were playing Zone freaking defense.

Being a fan is not synonymous with not acknowledging when your team is playing awful.

I think a person can “enjoy the ride”, and also be brutally honest about our inconsistencies and prospects. We have been wildly inconsistent this year. That’s just how it is. And acknowledging that fact does not make me (or anyone else) a fair-weather fan.

Let me set a few thing straight

For 1 KSB, I don’t think you’re a fair-weather fan. I think I got a pretty good handle on where you stand. And it’s appreciated to some extent. Like the fact that you are a coach lends some perspective I would never see.

2. I’d be a fool not to say we haven’t been inconsistent over a year. From my perspective though, I’m not gonna let two losses to Colorado ruin what I got to enjoy the last 10 games.

Losing sucks, no question about it. I just don’t understand beating the same point to submission. There are a number of factors that go into losing, and it’s unfortunate that you can’t figure out a working combination to win when you get a third crack at something, I just choose not to dwell on a bad game, but look to how not to let things like that happen again. In fact I told a co-worker of mine (KU fan) what I thought of the game when he asked me about it and I said. “As good as we’ve been playing lately, we’re due for a bad game, so I really don’t know.”

So wow, we had a bad game. I just think a cross-section of the last 10 games is more indicitive of what to expect than the last game, or the whole season. I mean seriously this IS the best CK has played all year.

Not being able to observe the game too closely (and since we lost, I’m not gonna replay ESPN3) due to working, I thought we had many a possession where we chucked up a shot, and well it didn’t go in, but we had no one in position to rebound on offense, and that’s where we lost a lot of ground….which I think adds to the point or two I’ve seen you make throughout this thread, which I believe were factors as well…

Oh and one more time

I always want to admit, I probably only can identify 20% of what’s in front of me on the floor. I don’t know much about baskeball. I could probably identify different zone defenses if I had to, but don’t realize them usually until TV announcers mention it…but I for sure could probably not instruct 5 players how to sucessfully run a 2-3 zone or 1-3-1…And I could probably only set up 1 offensive play. Point is, I can’t ever be too critical about what we did or didn’t do, because I’m in no means a position to do so.

"Nor yet in Dell?"

I completely understand.

I think what really kind of set me off was the whole discussion about Jake’s comments earlier this year basically accusing anyone who was daring to be critical of the team of being fairweather fans. I see it in JB’s sig whenever he posts, and — for reasons that go way beyond sport, and that I wrote about before the KU game last fall — get a bit frustrated whenever I think about it. I love my alma mater with a nearly unhealthy passion, and cheer hard for whatever team represents my school. And that quote just seriously rubs me the wrong way.

What exactly did Shane show today to warrant playing more?

All he did was get burned by Burks the minutes he did play. If you want to lay this on the Frank and the staff for not making defensive adjustments (playing off the guards, maybe a bit of zone here and there, etc.), fine. But Shane did not play good defense at all in his 9 minutes, so I have a hard time being upset about that. This, on top of him being well below average in the ISU game as well.

No

I think it is a combination of the coaches and players. Just do not have the killer instinct to put other teams away. Seem to believe the news that we are a good team, so we don’t play like we can. Instead the other team puts in the effort and we lollygag through the game.

Should the coaches make adjustment, yes. Should the players actually make sharp crisp passes and quick cuts, yes.

I like the Cats, I really do but this team is frustrating to watch. They could easily win the NCAA (hyperbole warning, maybe) but they come out flat against teams and lose in an effort that just is icky.

I’m very glad I’m not coaching this team, because as good as they are, there are times I’m baffled at the level of play.

And Frank screwed with his head big time after Shane had such a run of really solid games, by yanking the playing-time rug from under him. You don’t mess with a freshman’s psyche that way. Shane has now lost all the positive vibes he had going for him, and we just can’t afford to lose a lanky 6’6 defender because Frank’s trying to prove some point.

Can Any of You

Explain to me why the hell Frank plays guys like he does? Devon Peterson is horrible defensively and hasn’t played most of the year. Why the hell does he surface now to play crucial minutes in close games. He may have done a couple of good things offensively against ISU but overall, he is a LIABILITY.

And why not try a zone sometime during this game to just see if it would work. I understand you would have to keep Knutson in range of one defender at all times, but that just becomes a matchup zone.

I love Frank and am happy as hell that we’ve got him and hope we can keep him, but his substitutions and pattern of substitutions just drives me nuts.

Shane got the start, but he was clearly on a short leash perhaps due to bad practices, maybe based on a subpar game on Saturday.

I love Shane. He is one of my favorite players. But he wasn’t playing very well today and got benched rightfully so IMO. Peterson had a rough second half defensively and I agree Frank should have made a change. But I don’t really agree Frank made this call to punish Shane or prove a point.

In fact, I don’t think Frank is actually punishing guys for bad practices. Rather he strongly believes practicing poorly correlates and/or causes bad in-game play. So if a guy has a bad week of practice and then makes a bad play in the game he’s quick to pull the trigger and take the guy out. Whether you agree with the mindset or not is one thing, but I truly don’t believe he substitutes as punishment for anything other than a belief in who is providing the best chance to win.

by yeahboozin on Mar 10, 2011 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

Frank has said the reason for Shane's decreased playing time is having a bad week of practice.

And, to me at least, 8 minutes of playing time is not even CLOSE to enough to gauge what kind of game a kid’s going to have. Every time I saw Higgins or Burks treat their defenders like little schoolgirls, I just kept seeing how Shane fricking STONED Jordan Hamilton. But he was never really given a chance to do it today, and Frank’s crappy short-leash philosophy with him, has taken away all the confidence he had been playing with.

I think both things are pretty inane, though.

We’ve all (well, those of us who have played and/or coached) known those guys (or girls) who didn’t practice that well, but were “gamers.” I personally think Shane is probably one of those guys. And you just don’t use tournament games to prove points by punishing players.

Jeez, a bit of a meltdown after that loss.

We just went from one of the most dangerous teams in the country to one-and-done with one loss?

The defense wasn’t real good, but Burks and Higgins were hitting very difficult shots. Look, if CU plays like that they could make it to the second weekend of the tournament. There’s plenty to complain about, but Curt’s play was great and could be a sign of great things to come starting next week. Sure it sucks to be done watching Cats basketball until next Thursday or Friday, but I still am very confident in this team.

Two things that were consistent throughout the regular season reared their heads again: 1) CU is a bad matchup for the Cats and 2) As Rod goes this team goes. And he had a rare poor showing. Well, we most likely won’t have to play CU again and I’ll take my odds that Rod is going to be great the rest of the way.

CU hit a lot of shots and Cats missed a bunch of open shots. More so than usual on both sides.

But there wasn’t anything embarrassing about the effort in my mind.

I'll Admit

We don’t match up well against Colorado and losing is not the thing that has my goat. Frank’s coaching philosphy has taken a serious hit with me. Make you F——-G statements next week in practice or in the team meetings. Not in a critical game.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

I'm melting down (I'm still furious about the game the morning after) because of the incredibly inept coaching

The coaching has been good all through the winning streak. Now, it flew right out the window. You’re damned right I’m melting down. The Cats were totally inept on what should be their bed rock, defense! With that kind of pathetic performance the Cats won’t beat some team you’ve never heard of.

things to look at

Cats had:
4 players standing on perimeter at times, no one cutting.
Cuts were not quick or crisp, slow curl routes, at times.
Not many mid-range jumpers in the 2nd half.

I did not watch the D as close, so not sure what the issues were on that side. Do know there were 2 charges against Sprads that were not called.

Curt was playing like a 1st team all-Big 12 player.

So the team started focusing on trying to get the ball to him and thus reverting back to early January stagnant offense at times. CU made good adjustments to guard Curt better and the Cats didn’t shoot well enough from the perimeter to make them pay.

The team could have played better certainly. I just don’t think this should change all that much the perception of the team. If one were excited about this team this morning I don’t know why he’d be considering them DOA now.

by yeahboozin on Mar 10, 2011 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

if you run the offense then it is easier to get the ball to the hot hand.

It changes the perception because the team is now back to Jekyl and Hyde, if the good team shows up we win.

No, it really doesn't.

Jake was completely out of line. The people who were criticizing the team back then were right. And loving a team and a school as I do does not mean that you’ll never criticize them, and never think they are really underachieving. And it also doesn’t mean that we’re fair weather fans. Jake needed to focus on the team, and not on criticizing people for being justly upset at how the team was playing. Once he did that, he (and the team) turned a corner, and finished the season strong.

Last thing on this (from me, anyway).

He was pouting because there was a groundswell of unrest amongst the fanbase. But any time you have success, and then play incredibly poorly—as we were, at that point—there’s going to be unrest amongst the fanbase. And there SHOULD be that kind of unrest. It’s natural and understandable, when things go as badly as they did. And a team doesn’t need its best player—and senior leader, to boot—calling out fans who are experiencing natural frustration with subpar play from a team capable of much much more. And to call fans feeling that frustration (and voicing it) “fake fans” is just, well, as I said: not Jake’s finest hour. You can’t expect people to be “happy happy joy joy” when you’re playing like shit.

is not equivalent to excessive bashing and predicting season collapse based on a season that is not yet over.

Predicting a season's collapse when you start the conference 2-5,

and have the meat of your schedule (difficulty-wise, at least) staring you in the face IS the equivalent of “natural frustration.” I think it’s VERY “natural” to feel like your season has collapsed in a dumpster fire when you go from preseason #3 in the nation, and favorite to win the conference, to unranked, 14-8, and 2-5.

I suppose then

I am un-natural… I didn’t like the losses, no doubt, and was frustrated by the ‘fall from grace’ as most any true KSU fan would be, however it never made me feel like giving up on the season as a lost cause and claiming to know we wouldn’t make the Tourney with at least 10 games remaining in the season. Each fan has his/her own way about them, and that is fine. Which leaves me at the conclusion of having to simply move on and look forward to the next game, regardless of how others react(ed) to it.

… carry on!

It was aimed at people who had criticized him and/or the team.

I had done that. Thus, I found it (and find it) more than a little offensive, since I’ve been a fan of the Cats longer than Jake’s been alive. From what he wrote below, JB doesn’t mean it that way, but that’s how Jake INTENDED it, without question I’d say. With that said, I still think he’s a fantastic player, and I’m glad he’s with us! But the kid’s 21, and says dumb things sometimes, as we all did at that age. I just think that having it tossed in my face as part of a sig line rubbed me the wrong way, that’s all.

Perhaps some might take

exception to your sig-line that is a quote seeming to imply (same as presuming what was in Jake’s mind when he made his tweet(s) ) that football players – whom are all human beings – are simply pawns, as in a game of chess?

Yes, I know your signature’s quote is not meant that way but could be taken that way should someone choose to take exception to it. That was my point that you could (probably) simply choose to apply Jake’s quote as JB and I do as being for bandwagon fans… of which neither of us (you, JB, and I) seem to be.

Happy faces, everyone! Time for the class photo! ;-)

The problem with that is this:

Jake absolutely meant to attack those who were being critical of him and the team. He was calling people out for criticizing the team. He was pissed off at the wrong people.

As for my signature, coaching a football game is playing chess with human pawns. It’s a great metaphor, drawn by an even greater man. Jake’s quote was nothing but a cheap shot at people criticizing him. And it comes across (intentionally or not) when used as a sig, as a shot at those who dared be critical of Jake and the team at mid-season.

*Sigh*

To each their own.

I still say you cannot absolutely know the position of a person’s heart/intent in a tweet/quote – especially in an instance like this. However, you are free to make your own assumptions. I wasn’t really saying your quote is the same or trying take aim at/exception with it, but rather pointing out that just about anyone can take exception with just about anything they so choose.

Do you think that taking exception to Jake's quote

is really THAT far outside of what he actually meant by it? I just can’t see a lot of other ways to read it, given the criticism (almost all of it, legitimate) that he and the team were taking at that time.

Regardless of what Jake meant

Everyone is entitled to put whatever they want in their sig-line. I don’t really see the need to criticize someones signature, it just seems out-of-line to me. I think somebody’s signature is something you could easily ignore if offends you so much.

And the fact of the matter is, I kind of like that quote, if you don’t take it to mean what you say Jake meant, then it is a great quote. It derides KU as being a bunch of fairweather fans. What is so bad about that? It’s all in how you choose to see things.

Ok

I feel that you are not a fair weather fan and am in agreement with what GT said above about some of your insight on here is very nice to have around. I really dont think most people on here are fair weather fans because we turn out win or lose everyday!! If you look above where he thanked the fans then you can also see that he knew s#!+ wasnt going good and was just wanting to say thank you to everyone that always bleeds purple. The people he was talking to with my Sig line are the ones that only think its cool to rock purple when we win (see Duke fan).

We played okay in the first half.

Not great, but okay. Colorado made some adjustments at half offensively. K-State made no adjustments at half defensively. One of our good defenders only played for 8 minutes or so, and we completely fell apart on the defensive end. All in all, the loss is on Frank.

the loss is partially on Frank… and also partially on the players, and partially on the supporting staff, and partially on Colorado and their staff/players, etc etc. I really do not get this blaming of the whole game’s outcome (CU scored more than we did) on one man – the coach.

same state as I've been for a while.

Cats play like they are capable of, we can play with and beat any other team.

Cats play with little movement, lazy passes and avoiding mid-range jumpers; then we can lose to quite a few teams.

Most of the teams as opponents from here on out will take advantage of any team that plays like the 2nd option.
