RPI WATCH: 2/20/2011

Saturday was a mixed bag of results for K-State's resume that I would characterize as largely negative.

The few bright spots were Gonzaga completing another stop on its WCC revenge tour (next stop: St. Mary's); James Madison's one-point BracketBusters win; Texas Southern beating our old favorite, UAPB; and UNLV avoiding a sweep by Colorado State, which keeps the Runnin' Rebels in contention for an at-large NCAA berth.

That was more than balanced out, however, with typical losses by Alcorn State, North Florida and Presbyterian; disappointing losses by Loyola and UMKC; and absolutely crushing losses by Virginia Tech and Washington State.

The Hokies seemed to have put things together and were cruising toward a likely NCAA spot in a weaker conference, only to lose in Charlottesville for the season sweep by Virginia, a sub-150 RPI team. Fugly.

And I don't even have words for Wazzu's loss at Arizona State, which was only the Sun Devils' second Pac-10 win of the entire season. At this point, the Cougars are playing themselves off the NIT bubble.
