K-State Slate: 12.8.11
K-State Football
The Big 12 Conference announced its postseason awards yesterday. First team all-conference selections included Arthur Brown, Ray Kibble and Nigel Malone on defense and Clyde Aufner on offense. Notice the gaping omission there: David Garrett. Tyler Lockett was the offensive freshman of the year even though he missed the last four games of the season, and Brown was the defensive newcomer of the year. Bill Snyder was the coach of the year, of course. Bryce Brown was curiously absent from all postseason lists.
K-State Basketball
Bob Huggins is at peace. When you say it like that, it's like he died or something.
The Big 12 men's basketball tournament will be played at Sprint Center in Kansas City through 2014, as previously scheduled.
K-State Volleyball
The upset win over Nebraska was nice, but K-State is looking for more in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats get their chance tomorrow against Pepperdine in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
KU Coaching Search
KU AD Sheahon Zenger is now focusing on former NFL head coaches. Because those usually work out so well at the college level.

No surprise about AB and Nigel.
I’m a little surprised by Kibble and Aufner being first-team all-conference. I don’t know whether I’m more surprised that Hartman got second-team honors or that neither Rat nor Zimmerman got any recognition.
I suprised Guidry didn't rate an honorable mention at least.

Guidry not being on the list anywhere was a HUGE snub
especially after he was a player of the week after the Tech game. At least an Honorable Mention was deserved. and Garrett deserved first-team, but should have at least had 2nd-team honors he was pissed too (first tweet was deleted, but here’s the second:
@Rat_Garrett27 David Garrett
How much more do I need to do I den put up some of the best numbers at my position the last 2 years I don’t get it ..smh at the big 12
)
The Rat will just have to blow up some poor Arkansas player to show how pissed he is…
I don't even know the stats on Garrett ...
But you really have to not have been paying attention to not have Garrett as an honorable mention at least. He is a very, very good player. A difference-making player in every game he plays. Obviously, these people were not paying attention.

My mistake, I didn't catch that.
I agree, but I thought the slight was much, much worse.

I see now my comment was kinda confusing
I meant Guidry deserved H.M., The Rat deserved 1st/2nd team
Zim was honorable mention as well wasn't he?
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.

…Actually, nevermind, don’t. Every conference needs one sure win. Bring on Callahan!
I’m sad there was no way to put Honey Badger on the all-conference teams. I saw someone managed to do it somehow, but the league isn’t. Boo.

It's Willie the Wave and he is awesome ...

Also … is it supposed to be hard to recruit to this place???

by Itchy n Scratchy on Dec 8, 2011 9:12 AM CST up reply actions
Hypothetical Recruitment
Coach: “You should come play for us at HAWAII, I think we could do great things.”
Recruit: “Maybe, but I’m getting offers from USC, Texas, Florida… Why should I come here?”
Coach: “Hawaii.”
Recruit: “True, but I could surround myself with great talent and elevate my game at these other programs and hopefully get drafted high for the pros.”
Coach: “Hawaii.”
Recruit: “I know, but will anybody respect me here? I’m far away from the mainstream media markets and probably wouldn’t get the same coverage I would at these other places.”
Coach: “…”
Recruit: “…”
Coach: “HAWAII.”
Recruit: “Where do I sign?”
Would you like some Freys with that?

Actually, it's in Malibu CA, but I can understand the mistake. The photo looks like it could be Hawaii.

Well, I knew we were playing IN Hawaii.
And then, I just kind of made the jump to we were also PLAYING Hawaii.
Which shows you how much I follow volleyball.
Sorry LadyCats.

It also confused me that Sean T thought that Hawaii would be the Peppers.
WTH?
And then why would their mascot be Willie the Wave if their name was the Warriors? Though many time a mascot isn’t actually derived from the nickname (hello Iowa State), but still.
Now, it all makes sense.
Would you like some Freys with that?
by ChrisP Wildcat on Dec 8, 2011 9:43 AM CST up reply actions
you know...
Sometimes I wonder why coaches in Hawaii have so much trouble recruiting cuz I swam in an exhibition meet at the U of H my sophomore year in college (right next to the Stan Sheriff Center where the bball boys will be playing on Xmas) and loved every minute of my time in Honolulu.
But then I remember how far away it is from everywhere else and the amount of time spent traveling for the football players in their WAC away games and it makes a little more sense. Still…don’t think it would be an incredibly hard sell…lol.

Not suprised about Garret
when it comes to corners voters have always preferred lock down cover guys. When it comes to strait covering recievers Garret is solid but not the best. What he has always brought is sure tackling and I very high level of agressiveness.
And that sure-tackling, toughness, dependability and leadership
will be missed next season when he is gone. Best-tackling player on the team the past two years, including AB this year. Hopefully Chapman or Kip Daily steps into the void left by Garrett’s exodus.
This:
Best-tackling player on the team the past two years, including AB this year.
I agree with you, and I will conveniently ignore his whiff on the ISU punter last game.
This guy is probably my favorite player on the team.
Yeah, that missed tackle against ISU on the fake punt was excruciating
but you still had to love his hustle on the play.
Garrett has been the most consistent Wildcat defender during the past two years of inconsistent defensive performances. You could always depend upon him to make clean tackles game after game. I’ve only seen one sub-par performance out of him and that was the Texas A&M game. Even the best have an off-day and nothing he did in that game severely hurt the ’Cats chances on the field.
Really going to miss The Rat next year.
On that missed tackle
While sure he was there, he was left to swat at his shoe laces after picking his way through those lineman. It was impressive he got there at all honestly. #15 got blown up on the play and if Garret was about any other D-back on this team so would he.
Bobby Hill: What's a meat examination team?
Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
Totally agree
Only meant that the missed tackle was excruciating because my frustration level hit the tipping point and my heart stopped – all at the same second. Like I said, Garrett’s hustle on that play was outstanding and he had no other recourse but to dive for the ankles if he hoped to stop the ISU punter before he reached the first down marker. Hell of an effort by Rat. I wasn’t mad at him on the play at all. Just the rest of the outside contain guys.

I want free stuff too….
From TWWL
DUbbs posted the Media’s All Conference Picks
Notables are Collin Klein on 1st team as “All-Purpose”, Tyler Lockett relegated to 2nd team as “All-Purpose” despite being the best returner in the conference, and Nigel Malone on 2nd team after being the Pick-Master of the conference…
At least they got COTY and DNcOTY right, and figured out a way to get HBCK on the 1st team…
I love that
“All-Purpose” I hope they get a plaque or trophy for that.

They knew they had to get him honored somehow.
And without a Breakout POY award, this is probably the best they could do (without, you know, putting him at all-conference QB — this year the Big 12 was a ridiculously good QB league).

Don't know if this has already been posted
but over at CBS Sports Dennis Dodds has a nice piece on HCBS.
Thanks so much, that's great
Snyder seems very personable in an old grandpa kind of way. I don’t remember as much of that. Others have said it and I believe it – Coach is having fun.

Yeah, was thinking that same thing today
That Bill Snyder 1 wasn’t as cuddly and grandfatherly as Bill Snyder 2. I remember his players respecting him, but perhaps not having the widespread affection for him on the same level as this team does now. Those three years off really allowed him to recharge his batteries and gather some perspective. He’s rejuvenated and appreciating the job and the players more this go-round it seems.
