RPI WATCH: 12/7/11
Howard was our only non-conference opponent to win in the last two days, with Charleston Southern, Hawaii and Long Beach State all suffering tough losses on the road.
Meanwhile, Big 12 teams went 4-1, with TCU beating Texas Tech in its first Big 12 basketball game.
Oh, and some SEC team won a game in Madison Square Garden. Nobody noticed.

no way around it
As much as I hate to see it the Misery tigers are really strong, definitely one of the strongest in the conference.

I agree.
I haven’t been able to watch a Baylor game yet. Watched the Mizzou/Villanova game in spurts, and have paid attention to some of their other games. I honestly think Mizzou is one of the best teams in the country right now – not just Big XII.
Oh, come on now. That's just stupid.

Yep, I am eating crow on that one ...
Didn’t forsee …
a) It looks like Frank Haith can coach, if he has the material.
b) Zombie Kim English.
Obviously, they are a tough out. I wonder how they’ll play against a team that can flat wear them out up front, though.

I think they are better at the Anderson style of play now than when Anderson was coaching
Still contesting everything, but less silly fouls.

When Marcus Denmon is doing radio interviews ...
saying that there really isn’t a whole lot of difference between Anderson and Haith … just that Haith makes them focus on the details a lot more … like SCOUTING REPORTS … then I think it’s safe to assume these guys are being coached for the first time in their collegiate careers and they are responding.
Haith inherited a pretty full cupboard with a ton of experience and really good backcourt talent. Still, it’s a credit to him that he hit the ground running. We’ll see if Haith can recruit and put together his own roster at Missourah in due time. Actually, I won’t really care after this year.

great point I n S
Those Villanova players were gassed towards the end and let up. Not to take away from Mizzou’s great play but I am anxious to see them play when there top players are struggling.

The trick to beating Mizzou this year will be
1) Get Ratliffe in foul trouble
2) Keep Denmon and English from catching the ball with room to spot up and shoot
3) Have a backcourt that can handle tight man-to-man pressure
It will definitely happen sooner or later, but I have to say Haith has done a marvelous job of deploying the talent he has in a very effective way. The team has three great scorers — Denmon, Ratcliffe, English — and two other guard capable of scoring if needed (Flip Pressey and Dixon). Denmon is flat out playing like an All-American.
The conference race deifnitely seems wide open this yearwith MU, KU, Baylor and K-State all having legit shots. I think there is a very god chance KU’s conference title run ends.
Anyone else confused about how MU, at 8-0 against at least one nationally ranked for has a lower RPI than KSU which has taken on four speed bumps and one mediocre mid-major?

My guess is your game at Virginia Tech
migght trump our neutral site victories. Does RPI value road victories?
Yes, road victories count more than home and neutral site victories.
It’s how you end up with so many solid mid-major teams with very powerful RPIs at the end of the season … they rack up conference road victories like crazy.

Yep
This is my biggest problem with RPI. Road victories count for way too much.
As for Mizzou, I would argue the biggest difference for them this year is that they’re not going crazy with the fullcourt press all the time, which in turn means that guards like Marcus Denmon, Kim English and Flip Pressey don’t get as tired and can play 30-35 minutes a game, rather than 20-25 minutes a game. They’re not subbing in and out all the time, so their rhythm is even better, especially since they’ve been playing together for a while now.
