K.S.A.C. Pennant
I was wondering if anyone knows about old K-State related memorabilia, specifically pennants? I picked this up years ago at an antique mall in Illinois assuming it is a Kansas State Agricultural College pennant but I never really found out for sure. I plan on emailing the alumni association to see what they know but I figure right now they are pretty busy getting packages etc ready for the bowl game so I will wait a bit. I thought you guys might like to see it and possibly strike up a conversation in hopes that someone might know a little about it.
I did some research online but that never really produced any results. According to the KSU website, KSAC became Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science (KSC) [09 Mar 1931] so it's at least 1931 or earlier. The pennant seems to be in pretty good shape for being that old; I bet it could tell some stories. It seems to be well made, like many things back in the old days, everything is stitched on. The Wildcat is leather and stitched on there was well. Its made by the Chicago Pennant Company, but that's all I know. I have seen other pennants online of different universities and sports teams made by Chicago Pennant Company but I have not been able to find much more information on them, or even seen any other K.S.A.C. related items.
Just thought I would share and see if anyone had any information. Thanks

I would estimate
19late 1920’s based on the Wildcat logo. What you have would be a very rare find, especially for it’s condition, and while intrinsically it is priceless, I would place a monetary value on that in the $300-$500 range (without being able to physically inspect it).
I would take it to a professional frame shop and have it mounted on acid-free paper and put behind glass, to keep it safer.
That is truly a special find…keep it safe!!!

Special edition throwback pennant from October 28, 1939
I believe local postal codes in big cities began in 1940. Your’s doesn’t have one. It should say “Chicago 30, ILL”. But it does have the word “stickers” on it as a product offering. Stickers were commercialized in 1936. Prior, they were advertised as stamps cause you had to wet them somehow, just like a stamp used to be.
They were made to commeorate the second ever televised football game. We lost to the Nubs.

Joe, this is awesome
My dad’s uncle who just passed away in September attended KSU in the mid 50’s. I was looking at some of his old photos from when he was a student here, and I believe he graduated from “Kansas State College”, so this is definitely before that. He would have loved this.
Not sure where Black got his info, but that sounds like a perfectly reasonable explanation.
I am totally jealous, and wish I would be as lucky to find something like this.
As Black also mentioned above, I’m sure the Alumni Association would love to have this pennant framed and displayed in the Alumni Center. If you’ve ever wanted your name on one of those little brass nameplates for donating something…this is your chance. Or you could hang it up in your place and rub it in every year or so. :)

Thanks
Thanks for all of the information, I really appreciate it. That is a neat story about it being a special edition throwback pennant for the 2nd ever televised football game, something I never knew that’s for sure. How did you know all of that information BlackCats, especially the stuff about stickers?
I always figured if I contacted the Alumni Association they would guilt me into donating it haha. That wouldn’t be bad donating it (name is on the senior sidewalk already but that’s small potatoes) but I have been wanting to get it framed the correct way and have it along side my other KSU items in the mancave for awhile, just haven’t gotten around to it. I have been on the lookout for other related items but have not seen any this old. It always makes you wonder what may be out there and how it has survived all of these years.
I have sent the information and photos along to the Alumni Association and will let you know what they have to say.
I am glad I could share it with you all and strike up a conversation that doesn’t involve realignment.

Looked into a couple of advertising words, i.e. “stickers” and “lab aprons”. Researched the tag and how it changed over the years, additions like rayon (which was created in 1924-26ish, but wasn’t required to appear on the tag prior to 1964. Then the zip codes caught my eye, so researched those and that stuck me down below 1940. But “stickers” brought me above 1936.
The rest, honestly is a guess. I couldn’t figure out why they would create a pennant with the pre 1931 logo and college name so I looked into BIG events in KSU history. Then I saw that we hosted the second televised game (which was the first homecoming game ever televised for anyone) and that it was the 20th anniversary of our first conference championship (1909). My best guess is they were made for that homecoming game.
I could be completely wrong, but to me it just makes sense.

WHAT!?!?
you mean KSU had a homecoming game televised before Mizzou? That can’t be true! They invented homecoming, and who wouldn’t want to televise one of their homecoming games?
(you know, they make it fairly easy to poke fun at them)

K-State Football Vault
My wife got me the KSU football vault book this year, and I love it for the history of the school and pictures along with the football stuff. Also traces the history of the nickname/school names. Photos of the light poles at old Memorial Stadium look really strange to me since I used to live down the street from there and hang out there quite a bit. The reprints of old memorabilia are pretty cool too.
Anyone ever seen the book/
Duh...
I have the football vault myself, and didn’t even think to look in there. Silly me.
