Interesting stuff from the mothership today, as SB Nation's Samuel Chi projects that Oklahoma State's Bedlam blowout will push the Cowboys into the national title game over Alabama. He has Michigan jumping to No. 13, but TCU stays out of the top 16, and projects K-State to meet the Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl.

Too early to start buying tickets for Tempe just yet, but we could be in for an exciting evening. Stay tuned for an open thread after the basketball game.

I don't much care for how he snears at KSU

And how pissed will you be if KSU gets bumped to the Alamo Bowl?

Sure, it’s not likely, but it is possible, right? All it takes is for OSU not to get into the NCG and the Cotton Bowl to decide it wants RG3 (if they were watching the games yesterday) or OU (if they were not). My goodness, I just had a horrible thought. What if the Cotton Bowl picks RG3, and the Alamo Bowl picks OU? In that case, KSU would be going to Phoenix alright, but for the Insight Bowl, not the Fiesta.

As you can tell, the wounds from ‘98 still haven’t healed. I assume the worst until proven otherwise.

by SanDiegoCat on Dec 4, 2011 10:42 AM CST up reply actions

This worries me as well.

I just think somehow we’ll get screwed out of the good bowl picture. I mean they’ll work to get Michigan and TCU into the big bowls. Then the Cotton…I wouldn’t put it past them to chose the Land Thieves over us due to “tradition” and the following.

Anything below the Cotton…well I just don’t want to think about it.

I understand the concern...

…but it would be shocking beyond belief if we were passed over all the way down to the Insight Bowl.

I’m still not confident enough that I would bet on a BCS bowl appearance, but I feel a lot better about it than I did when I went to bed last night.

I mean, it HAS happened before.

SIGH.

That only happened because the Cotton and Holiday Bowls had already made deals assuming we were getting a BCS bid regardless. Then we didn’t, and “oops”.

Mandel says KSU to Fiesta against Stanford, if OSU gets into the NCG

Or KSU to Sugar against Meeeshigan, if OSU falls to Fiesta. But he’s assuming TCU won’t get in top 16 (without supporting that assumption), and says he’ll reassess if TCU gets in. Not much of a “projection,” if you ask me. But I like that he’s making assumptions that go KSU’s way.

OU is a real option for the Cotton

I think I read where OU has only played once in the Cotton Bowl in all it’s years. I find that hard to believe. If Cotton picks OU, it will be on that historical angle that the jerks justify it.

by Furnace76 on Dec 4, 2011 10:55 AM CST reply actions

I'd believe it.

The Cotton Bowl was affiliated with the Southwestern Conference, not the Big 8, before the formation of the Big 12. Between the time the Big 12 formed and Bob Stoops got to Oklahoma, the Sooners didn’t go to any bowl game. Since then, Stoops has had them in 8 BCS games and only 4 other bowls. One was the 2001 Cotton Bowl.

by AMS on Dec 4, 2011 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

I just scanned the results on Wiki

and OU has in fact only played in 1 Cotton in all the years. Look for Jerry Jones to try to get an OU-Arkie match up – that would be like him. And he could justify it on the basis of the 41 point beat down we got. That game’s results could haunt us in the next 12 hours. I hate to be a nervous nelly, but I never underestimate our ability to get hosed in these matters.

oh hail the Purple and White

by Furnace76 on Dec 4, 2011 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

It's simple. Go to a BCS game.

Then Jerry can have his Land Thieves/Feral Pigs matchup without hurting us at all. Kind of sucks for Baylor, but then they’d land a mediocre Pac-12 team in the Alamo Bowl and get a 10-win season out of the deal.

I think we go BCS. OU will go to the alamo.

Agreed, to both points

Current selection order is OSU, KSU, BU, OU, MU, UT, TAMU, ISU

OSU should go NCG based on being 3rd in human polls, and computer love for Big 12
KSU to Fiesta
BU to Cotton (super hot/trendy right now)
OU to Alamo
MU/UT to insight
UT/MU to Pinstripe
TAMU to TicketCity
ISU to Texas

BCS needs to cut the BS

the no.1 and no.2 teams from the no.1 and no.2 conferences, mano a mano.

BCS Championship: LSU vs. O-State

Fiesta: K-State vs. Alabama

The rest: meh…

by LC on Dec 4, 2011 11:46 AM CST reply actions

I'm more than willing to admit Alabama's the 2.5th best team in the nation, tied with OSU

And that there’s an upper echelon in CFB football, that we are not in. KSU vs ’Bama…no thanks! KSU-Michigan…I think we could show Nebraska how to beat ’em in the desert.

by GTcat on Dec 4, 2011 12:09 PM CST up reply actions

GT, when you say upper echelon...

Are you talking about upper echelon of history or ability? There are programs that have more history than ours, and there are programs that have a larger alumni base than ours. But more ability? I’m not so sure.

I don’t think LSU has faced an offense like O-state’s yet. I would like to see how their defense does when it has to work to get the other QB’s jersey dirty.

KSU vs ‘Bama. Hell, yes! They had serious trouble with LSU’s fake honeybadger, let’s see how they do with the real one.

by LC on Dec 4, 2011 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

I mean within the context of 2011

I am willing to admit Alabama is in a small percentage of teams in the 120 that are far and above a better football team than anyone else this season. We are not quite there. We’re close, but not quite there. I would say there are probably 3 or 4 teams at the top, then another 4 teams down from that (that we are in), and then there’s teams 9-40 that are all about the same, and then there are teams 41-120 who just aren’t that great. I’m looking at you Mizzou

by GTcat on Dec 4, 2011 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

also what is this all about anyway?

It’s all about who most deserves a shot to beat LSU?

team one: disguise OSU’s resume anyway you want; They lost one game to a team they should not have on the road, but did plenty else all season long to look impressive.
team two: a team who already had a chance to beat LSU at HOME and did not while missing 4 FGs in that game and did not. LSU did not block 4 FGs, Alabama missed 4 FGs. Team 2 had their chance, why do they somehow deserve another?

If Alabama would have won, and was undefeated, and LSU’s only loss was to them…I think it would be much much much harder to debate 1 loss LSU and OSU since LSU beat a ridiculous amount of BCS ranked teams within one season.

"Nor yet in Dell?"

by GTcat on Dec 4, 2011 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I honestly do not know whether OSU is better than Alabama or not

But that’s exactly why i think OSU deserves the shot at LSU. Alabama already had their shot, and couldn’t get it done. There’s no way anyone can know which team is really better, so let’s give OSU the opportunity to see if ESPN was wrong about how dominant the SEC is.

by smitty3268 on Dec 4, 2011 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure why this was green'd.

OSU needed more than just 25 percent of the 2nd place votes in order to surpass Alabama per the broadcast.

Bottom line, it’s highly unlikely that Okie State is playing for all the marbles. But we’ll find out for sure tonight.

God bless Sagarin's freaky computer

His ELO-Chess rankings from today — one of the six computer polls used in the BCS — has 4 Big XII teams in the top 7, with OU at an amazing #6. He also has 9 of the 10 Big XII teams in the top 30 (what’s up, KU?). I’d call him a Big XII homer, but he grew up in NYC, went to MIT, and lives in Indiana.

by GrumpyCat on Dec 4, 2011 1:50 PM CST reply actions

I still think it would be better

Than watching 2 teams from the same conference play each other for the second time in a defensive struggle yawn fest…I think it would be cool to see what OSU’s offense can do against the great defense the Tigers have. It’s clear that the SEC and Big 12 have been number 1 and 2 respectively this season so why not have their conference Champs face each other in the NCG? But then again…you can’t argue logic when referring to the BCS…

Has anyone broken this down

but if TCU does slip into the top 16, and keeps us out of BCS, I think Baylor’s win over Longhorn might have helped TCU’s computer rankings just enough to have gotten them into the top 16. We should have been pulling hard for UT! Darn, those Longhorn’s.

A Baylor win helped TCU, but neither helped nor hurt KSU because we played Texas also. Crap!

is the Harris poll out yet, and it will have to be the computers that keep them out. They are 15th in Coach’s.

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 4, 2011 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but they moved up 2 spots in both the AP and coaches polls

Stands to reason they would do the same in the Harris, which would put them at 15/15. They were 18 in the computers last week, and i doubt they’d fall any further than that. I’m guessing they finish 16 in the BCS and barely get in – that would also be exactly 2 spots up from last week.

by smitty3268 on Dec 4, 2011 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

And that really sucks

look at the numbers for TCU using my method. 121.2 average. That is horrible compared to all the other teams that could be considered (KSU is 160.2 for example).

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 4, 2011 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Baylor’s win over Longhorn which sealed the deal. A Texas win would not have hurt us, since we played both.

Here are updated rankings based on my method to determine who is deserving of playing in a particular game

These are based on the sagarin rankings as found today in USA Today.

I’m going to save space on the thread by only listing the final score (you will have to trust me on the math). Here is an explanation of how the method works.

LSU: 2525 or 194.2 avg
Bama: 2059 or 171.6 avg
OSU: 2305 or 192.1 avg
Ore: 2003 or 154.1 avg
Stan: 2030 or 169.2 avg
VT: 1845 or 141.9 avg
Clem: 1908 or 146.8 avg
OU: 1832 or 152.7 avg
Bay: 1741 or 145.1 avg
KSU: 1922 or 160.2 avg
BSU: 1794 or 149.5 avg
TCU: 1454 or 121.2 avg
Mich St: 1559 or 119.9 avg
Mich: 1787 or 148.9 avg
Wisc: 18815 or 139.6 avg

The biggest surprise hee is that because of how the BCS rules work regarding the at-large picks TCU would get the nod over BSU because they won the Mountain West, but TCU’s score is by far the worst of any of the teams in consideration. And at this point, I think Mich St can kiss all hope of an at large good bye.

It’s a tragedy that the last game of the 2011-2012 season, before I have to wait for months to watch CFB again has to end with such a lame matchup like that. Isn’t that part of the appeal to bowl games? Being non-conference and all.
