Analyze Kansas State any way you want. They are a tough team to play against. Frank Martin has improved each yr. as coach. Seen it up close.

Great job by the players and coaches
Did anyone else see a slight adjustment in the defensive scheme last night, the fact that the defender on the weak side was not “overplaying” his man to as great an extent? I thought I noticed this, which I believe led to very few back door gimmes.
Totally impressed with the unselfishness of this team and the fact that we are about 10 deep with kids who accept their role and contribute within the context of this system. I thing the offense will be better than last years because they aren’t all standing around waiting for Jake to make a play.
oh hail the Purple and White
I pretty much agree with you.
It also looked to me like even on the strongside near the ball, they weren’t trying to cut off the pass as much as they were somewhat hanging back and waiting for the ball handler to get a little careless with the dribble or the pass. It appeared to me that they really had LBSU well scouted.
Way to go Cats. Great victory. Solid.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
Another year for the guys with the triple-post set-up (which I still can't ID on a given play) helps too I'm sure
The only thing the Cats are missing, as we’ve all known since the start of the year, is a true stud. But! They have a bunch of guys who can step up. McGruder, Gipson, Samuels, JO, Gip, Spradling have all taken over games in their careers. Yeah, it would be great to have one guy to lean on, but maybe that’s just not the make-up of this team. Is that a wekaness?

"Is that a weakness"
not necessarily. I think between Rod, Will and Angel, you have guys who will not be afraid to step up and take the shot when the game is on the line. Which one has the hot hand will depend on the opponent’s scheme and strenghts.
My dream would be if Shane would develop the touch and confidence to become truly effective with the 12-16 foot jumper. That shot is SO available to him, as a 6-6 swingman, within the flow of our offense, that if he got confident and effective with it, I think we would be unstoppable. If he got really good with it, Gipson’s close-in game would open up too.
I was impressed with the flow of our offense these last three games. I am cautiously optimistic that this team may surprise on the upside. EMAW

All this emphasis on having a "go-to" guy makes me LOL sometimes.
Did that KU team in 2008 have a “go-to” guy? Not really. Quality depth is how KU has dominated this conference for seven years running, guys. And now Frank is trying to build something similar.
Jake was a great player, perhaps the greatest I’ve watched with my own eyes from start of career to finish. But the only team Jake was on that accomplished anything beyond just making the tournament was one with four players averaging double figures. Sound familiar? It wasn’t just Jake.
Agree - and well stated
“quality depth” – you hit it on the head with that observation, and the fact that HCFM is really building that.
oh hail the Purple and White
My definition of "go-to" guy is probably a lot looser than yours.
First, just to avoid any impression that I don’t like the makeup of this KSU team … we have terrific depth of athletic, physical role players. Quality depth pretty much all the way to the end of the bench. I really like the team and we’re going to win a lot of games by outworking teams and just physically dominating games. So, on to my point …
I don’t think every good team has to have a guy that avg’s 20+ ppg. I do think every good team almost always has at least a couple of guys who are capable of reliably creating offense … and one guy they repeatedly go to for that in the crunch. The guy you can isolate in a decent situation and say “here you go, now go get us 2 points or get a wide open shot for someone.” Whether that’s isolating a guard and clearing the court or it’s clearing a side of the court for a two-man game and dumping it into a post player that has reliable scoring skills. This KSU team doesn’t have that yet, but I think it’s on the way. It’s Rodriguez and Gipson. Rodriguez is getting there fast. I think it’s going to take until next year before Gipson fully adjusts to major conference post play, but I think a Dejuan Blair type is in the making. Until then, KSU is going to be super-susceptible to long, dangerous offensive swoons. The kind that lose you conference games.
While 2008 ku didn’t have one dominant offensive player (though Chalmers took over in every crunch time situation) … that team was jam-packed with offensive talent. ku hasn’t just had quality depth … they’ve had quality depth mixed with great high-end offensive talent.
To me, this is a lot like the argument about not necessarily needing a franchise QB to win a superbowl. Yeah, you can do it … it’s just a thousand times more difficult. I don’t think elite basketball teams have to have one dominant guy, but they need multiple realistic options. Right now, this KSU team is doing it the (really) hard way, which makes it even more impressive.
When the shot clock winds down under 10, who is the guy on the team who needs to have the ball in his hands? Angel, right? And he’s the only answer. I love Angel, but that’s not a good enough place to be in if this team wants to do great things. It is what it is … this team was supposed to be rebuilding anyway and yet we’re still on track to win a ton of games. But, imo, we’re going to need to develop a couple of go-to guys to take it to the next level. Angle, Gip, or ???

Frank's emphasis on post recruiting makes me think that the pinch post isn't going anywhere.
Lemon Chex has great size, can spot up, and he’s a pretty good passer. Eventually, he’ll sit very nicely at the elbow and distribute the ball well.
Just watch. Oh, you just wait and watch.

I don't think it's going anywhere either.
But I hope it will be just one part of Frank’s bag of tricks.
I hope Underwood doesn't go anywhere...
And there is no chance that Tex Winter’s U (might be a stretch, but I love the man) only plays the pinch post.

I’m used to always hearing about how someone carried a team to a championship, so that’s why I asked. You make a good point about KU in 2008.
