K-State Volleyball pulls upset in Lincoln
Editor's Note -- Ordinarily I wouldn't bump an incredible Farmageddon post, but K-State volleyball just pulled a stunning upset in the NCAA Tournament. Go Cats!
I've never watched a complete match of volley ball in my 39 years of life but Coach Fritz's Wildcats team made me a fan for life!
K-State won in 5 hard fought sets over NU..IN THEIR HOUSE! Again, I'm somewhat new to V-ball but apparently very few have done that. The intensity of the matches rivaled the aorta bursting tension of the football games we've watched this season and, I think that's saying something!
This has to be good karma right?!
Congrats to Coach Fritz and the Wildcat Volleyball team!!

My mom was texting me score updates the entire time...
She flipped the fuck out when we won. What’s that only like the fourth time we’ve ever beaten the Nubbs? And to go to the Sweet 16!?

I just learned of this and came to post it.
Wins in Volleyball don’t get much bigger than this. Nebraska’s about as good as they come. Only Penn State I think compares perennially?!?! Who am I kidding, I know little to nothing about NCAA Volleyball, but I would totally be stoked if Fritz and company could win a Nat’l title and this was a HUGE step towards hanging a sweet@$$ banner in Ahearn. CONGRATULATIONS!
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Serious Question
Can we get some open game threads for the rest of the tourney? I would go out of my way to find time to participate.

quick google search tells me it's 64
too bad the finals weren’t in KC like they were last year.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Also
It works exactly the same as the Women’s tourney where there’s a host school(unless that has changed and I missed it)

You're right, it is just like how women's bball used to be
Women’s bball changed for some reason (too many people at games…? is that really a problem for any women’s sports?).

Though it did suck when we had to play at Minnesota(despite being the higher seed)
But it was great for the sport I thought. When K-State hosted that one year(we played Arkansas in the 2nd roun) the place was packed. You’d think they’d want that for a woman’s game instead of an arena that doesn’t hardly sell tickets.

I totally agree
It’s sad, but it seems like the people who run women’s bball don’t understand how limited its appeal is.

Do we have
A resident V-ball expert? I hope I’m not the only one watching and going, ‘wait, wtf just happened?’ I ask my wife but she’s a track and field geek so…
Who’s the player with the different colored jersey?

Today, we learn that TB was dragged to a lot of HS volleyball games as a child.
And that he and his sister would stand in the bleachers and imitate the signals their dad made, which proved to be a great deterrent to fans around them complaining about the refs.

Complaining about high school refs is stupid.
Most of the time, they just really dig the sport and want to make a few extra bucks. People should cut them some slack.

Unless they make a bad call against my team.
Then I will ride them all the way back to the fire station.
(Most of our refs were fire fighters, keep up).

I knew that too
But i have 5 years of K-State Volleyball band under my belt, and Im a sports nut, so I learned as much as I could
Libero?
Is that what they’re called?
Must be some kind of rover position. That would explain the, uh, ahem, lower center of gravity.
Yes
A Libero just plays the back row and is specifically there to dig out spikes(preventing kills). This is a position that didn’t exist a few years ago in America and high schools didn’t even start doing this in Kansas till I was in high school. They also look equally as great in spandex as their leggy teammates.

The position existed...
They were just called defensive specialists. When they changed a lot of rules in 2000 one of them was a subbing rule. To compensate, and frankly keep girls from losing their scholly, they adopted the Libero position who can sub into the backcourt as often as you’d like.
I, regrettably, kind of stopped paying attention to rule changes around 2003 and I think I heard they changed the subbing again but kept the Libero.

I'm totally stoked about this!
Nebraska is definitely one of the best vball programs out there year in and year out.
And to beat them in Nebraska is freaking amazing.
So, I guess the next round is next weekend?
Go Cats!!!

Some fun facts
This is K-State’s 4th win in 84 tries vs. Nebraska. It’s also the first time since 1993 that Nebraska has not made the Sweet 16. Don’t forget that this couldn’t have happened if Nebraska hadn’t left the Big 12, since conference foes can’t face each other in the first two rounds. How sweet it is.
WHY?!?! WHY did I not go to a volleyball team to support them this year? Dammit!
Amazing win girls. Now, enjoy Hawaii!

You'll be able to cheer on basically the exact same team next year.
Very young group for K-State. Could put together a big year in 2012.

What's fun is you could be talking about three, maybe even 4 (depending on baseball) teams here

Amazing
http://www.kstatesports.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/120211aaa.html
No other team has ever beaten NU on their home floor twice.
The ladies are 8-1 in 5-set matches this year (which strikes me as rather similar to a certain football team’s prowess in 1-TD games).

I didn't think it was possible, but Nebraska fans do actually pay attention to sports besides football

Football and Volleyball
And that’s the extent of what they care about.

I will always savor any win against Nebraska, in any sport, until the end of time.
Way to go, ladies. I mean, watching Huskers have their dreams crushed is the equivalent of Christmas morning to me.

Is it hyperbole to call this one of the greatest upsets in KSU sports history?
I was talking to the wife last night, and I told her all the stats of KSU vs NU volleyball through the years from the recap. Then I realized, this isn’t like football (turn the ball over 5 times, and you’re probably going to lose) or basketball (your opponent hits 60+% from 3). I think volleyball has to be an extremely tough sport to pull off an upset, because of the number of points (lots of times to turn it around), all all that mini-halftimes for adjustments.

Final Point + Celebration
Found a cool video of the final point from last night’s match plus the team’s on-court celebration.
The team’s next match is against Pepperdine in Honolulu. At the 0:43 point in the video, there is a touching moment where Kuulei Kabalis, a Hawaii native from Hilo, exclaims “I’m going home,” and taking her team with her.
Sweet 16 appearances in the VB Big Dance have been rare for Susie Fritz and her team. How sweet this must be to grab a spot from Nebraska, and do it in front of a red-packed house at the NU Coliseum.
And look at the K-State roster; there are no seniors on this team. Nice to see another K-State coach get so much out of the talent on her roster. Is there any collegiate athletic department in the country that maximizes talent the way K-State coaches do?
How did I not hear about this befoe now?
Congrats Lady Cats! ! ! This is sweet.
