K-State Basketball

K-State clubbed Alabama in a 71-58 win at the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Saturday. The Wildcats won despite getting only five total points from Rodney McGruder and Thomas Gipson.

The play of true freshman point guard Angel Rodriguez was the biggest revelation Saturday. Rodriguez scored 13 points and tallied seven assists on a night when Will Spradling was sick and McGruder was mysteriously non-existent.

Big 12 and other college basketball

Other than K-State's win and Baylor's triumph over BYU, it wasn't a very successful weekend for Big 12 basketball teams. Oklahoma State took a 66-56 loss to New Mexico in Oklahoma City, while Texas A&M looked about as good against Florida as K-State did last year, losing 84-64.

Possible future opponent Xavier, playing without three of its to players after last week's brawl with Cincinnati, was rocked by Oral Roberts, 64-42.

Umm...

On Christine, the golf cart ...

The dude that gets taken for a ride … that is just classic. You can see the wheels turning in his mind as he tries to figure out what the hell he’s going to do next. Ultimately bailing was probably a good decision.

That is quite funny

He actually grabs the steering wheel and steers it for a bit, and then is like “Uhh, I think I want off this thing” and rolls out.

As someone mentioned on the original story, it DOES appear as if a couple of those orange pads were wedged up against it, so I definitely think it was intentional. I doubt the intent was to run it into a group of people, but who knows.

I would say, that when in doubt root for the Big 12

except for KU regularly, and this year Mizzou and aTm.
You should also probably root for WVU and TCU.

More wins means a better profile, and less chance of sh*t going down like this year when a team that didnt even play for its conference champ game is playing in the “nat. title” game

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 8:48 AM CST up reply actions

They are common opponents

So I don’t guess it matters a whole lot…but since we have true double round robin in conference play, and we are all going to beat up on each other, I would think we want as good of an overall non-conference record as possible to help the conference RPI.

I'm rooting for Bama

because even though we play OSU twice, the bama win is signature right now and I’d like it to stay that way. If they collapse it’s one less quality win he have for tourney selection.

I agree with this logic as well.

OSU is having a rough go of it so far. It is kinda like the OSU loss to ISU. Bama losing to OSU at this point would make our victory over Bama less meaningful (probably).

But like I said above, there is the conference RPI thing to consider as well. I’m just not sure how that works, and if we take care of business in the conference, it shouldn’t matter. I think the conference RPI will be a factor for that 6th and 7th team in the Big 12 trying to get into the tournament.

Bad big 12 weekend and yet our rpi jumps to 33 with the win

Are Xavier’s players still going to be out for our Christmas game with them? If so we will be sitting very solid going into conference play.

If I heard Wyatt correctly on the postgame show

the Big 12 was 8-2 (7-1) on Saturday…so it was actually a decent weekend conference wise

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 8:50 AM CST up reply actions

The conference was

4-2 on Saturday

and 3-0 on Sunday

Still a decent weekend though.

I believe I read that two players will miss the first game in Hawaii, and one will miss the second. But they should be at full strength by the time we would meet up with them.

I'm leaning a lot toward thinking ...

Xavier isn’t going to be in the final. I think Long Beach might just take them down. It’s going to be the Tu Holloway Show either way, since he’s the only key guy coming off suspension for that game. And even if they win that one, they’ll probably get Auburn in the semis, who isn’t proven, but doesn’t seem like they’re that bad either. It’s not a gimme with players missing for that one too. I’ll be rooting for them to make the final because, ultimately, having Xavier on the KSU resume is a no-lose situation. Xavier is going to be an RPI powerhouse by the end of the season.

KSU … there is ZERO excuse for not making the final of that game. So. Illinois sucks. UTEP sucks. Clemson pretty much sucks. We should make the finals of that tournament even if the longest shot we make is a FT.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Dec 19, 2011 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Yea I just noticed Clemson lost to Charleston and Coastal Carolina

You are correct…no excused for us to get to the final. I don’t think Xavier will lose tho with Holloway back.

That Mark Lyons (I think his name is Mark)

is their second leading scorer. I think he is averaging something like 15 ppg and Holloway is averaging like 17 ppg. So, yeah, getting Holloway back will be helpful, but still not the same team that beat Cincinnati.

Here are the rules for how the winner is chosen

Craig James is not one of the media voters, so that’s good for Snyder (since he mentioned on the BCS selection show he thought Brady Hoke deserves COTY). Kirk Herbstreit is, which I think is good, because he seems to be on the KSU train.

And Jessie Tuggle is one of the College Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee members, so that should be a vote in Snyder’s favor too (unless he is upset that Justin hasn’t gotten to play QB this season).

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 19, 2011 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

I feel bad for Justin not being able to play thanks

to HBCK’s emergence as unquestioned team-leader. He’s had some duty on special teams, and that shows me he’s a team-player and just wants to get in the game. If I were HCBS, given that Sams is coming off a redshirt next year and Sam Johnson is a serviceable 3rd-string, I would redshirt Tuggle so he will have one more year to earn the starting job once CK graduates. It will be tough, with Sams a sophmore and Bender coming off redshirt, but the competition would be more wide-open than it currently is (no matter what HCBS likes to preach, CK is the starter next year).

It also wouldn’t surprise me if Bender gets moved to another position, based on his listed speed. He would be a great help at Safety, HB (esp in “Wildcat” package), or even Corner/Wide Receiver. He could even pull the Honey Badger, and play another position for a year before coming back to QB

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

One of the great things about recruiting to a QB-run-heavy offense ...

Is that the guys that lose out on the starting job can so easily be moved (if they wish) to other positions … usually WR or S. And former QBs are almost always capable of playing other positions well, given the right amount of size/athleticism.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Dec 19, 2011 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

I think Jordy was a QB in high school, I know Tysyn, Ty, Chris H, and Angelo were, and bet you could come up with a couple others if you looked harder and deeper into the history of the roster.
Snyder often just recruits smart athletes and molds them into what he needs

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 12:12 PM CST up reply actions

Too late

If I remember correctly, Justin burned his redshirt year while backing up Cam Newton at JuCo. I’m pretty sure he only has a year left, and if he wants to get on the field, it will have to be at a new position. He’s 6’3 – 227 lbs. Maybe another big receiver (though with Harper and Lockett, we’re pretty set on the outside). Maybe he can play some running back, run the wildcat. If his frame could handle another 30 pounds, he could be a situational rush end for the D. Just looking at the kid on the sideline, you can see his athleticism. It would be a shame if we could not find some way to use it.

by ichacat on Dec 19, 2011 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

You're probably right

I just looked up his HS recruiting year and it was 2008, same year as Arthur and Harper. So next year would have to be his last…bummer

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

Keep Tuggle at QB

You can never account enough for injuries and – perish the thought of anything happening – Colin Klein does take an awful lot of hits. Some of that might be mitigated by Hubert growing more as an additional threat or some other RB emerging to take the heat off the QB option, but until that happens teams know to target Klein in the run game – particularly in short-yardage and down near the goal line.

by CT-K-Stater on Dec 19, 2011 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind seeing Tuggle go out there with Klein, at least a few plays a game

We could have either one line up under center, or go out as a receiver.

But I agree he needs to keep getting snaps at QB just in case unless Sams is good enough for 2nd string and Tuggle is still 3rd.

Dear K-State family,

Recently, I received a letter from Amy Button Renz informing me she enlisted our alumni to vote for me for Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year. I understand you have cast more votes than any other coach has received. As always, you remain loyal to your football program, and that is far more meaningful to me than Coach of the Year honors.

Thank you, and may the Lord bless you during this Holiday Season.

Warm regards,
Bill Snyder

I'm still not convinced the Cats will be a better team with Angel starting at PG than Will in March

Yeah, he’s had a good game, but he (and Rod) can’t hit a barn. Angel is always going to make silly mistakes, and he’s smaller than Will. He’s faster, and possibly has a higher potential, but I’d rather have Will at PG than Angel.

I like Austin’s takes on the bowl, particularly the last one “Interest rates are low”. HA! Financial humor.

Are we not going to be able to watch any of the tournament games?

I'd like to see the split-PG duo.

It kind of reminds me of having both Clemente and Pullen being able to take the ball up. Sprads isn’t the playmaker the other 3 were/are (or capable), but he’s a better shooter.

Come March, I want Angel to have as much experience as possible.

by mystman995 on Dec 19, 2011 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with you

Angel is faster/more exciting and is a better “playmaker” but Will has a cooler head and better vision and shoots the ball better.

And yes, experience will be CRUCIAL for the young guys once March comes. Martavious should not have to rotate in for Angel at PG because Angel hasn’t gotten over his freshman issues…

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

It is a ESPN tourney

and I believe the games with either be on the flagship or the U.

by jtarkman on Dec 19, 2011 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

My problem with Will at PG going forward ...

Is that he’s showing some serious deficiencies running against decent full court pressure. Or decent pressure, period. Angel has less of an issue with that and he’ll only get better. I also think Angel’s offense, overall, is going to keep getting better and better with playing time, including his outside shot (and he’s not afraid of it, like a couple of our other players are). He really created offense for us against Alabama (and thank God he did).

I like Angel and Spradling on the court at the same time. Angel can create wide open shots for Spradling … who is also a capable ball-handler and distributor when he’s not under the gun.

At this point, I’m pretty sure Angel is the future at PG and the future is coming pretty soon.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Dec 19, 2011 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

Only real full court pressure was AL

and Will was seriously sick.

by Anon_the_younger on Dec 19, 2011 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

I forgot that Will was sick ...

I’d still like Angel to take over the “get it to our PG and clear out the backcourt” role. Will doesn’t turn it over like crazy, I just think he’s not a high-end option with that. That opinion actually dates back to last year, too … though he was a scrawny-ass freshman.

Bottom line is that I think we’re in good shape at the 1-2 for a long while.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Dec 19, 2011 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

With our half court offense being so painful to watch, I like the fact that Angel can push the tempo

If we are being honest with ourselves, we are just awful at the half court O. We are much better in transition when the tempo is pushed up…that is what Angel allows us to do – push the tempo. Will just doesn’t have that ability in his game.

I always thought Will was more of a 2 guard….stick him in the corner on transition and let him bang wide open 3 pointers. On occassion when the situation calls for it have him run the half court or call plays as necessary.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by mac attack ict on Dec 19, 2011 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

There were many times during the Bama game

where you could see Frank was pissed that the guys (Will, Angel, Tay) weren’t trying to push more often when they had the advantage.
Thats just something that has to come with experience I guess.

+1 on Will

Don’t forget his defense/ability to take the charge. I think I like Angel at the point soon, but Will needs to be on the court for 30 minutes a game.
