K-State Slate: 12.12.11
All K-State Sports
Seventeen K-State athletes received their degrees in graduation ceremonies over the weekend. Congratulations to all of them!
K-State Football
It's Charlie Weis' job to get 2-10 KU and 10-2 K-State to switch places.
K-State Basketball
The Wildcats were looking to rebound against North Florida on Sunday, but instead of rebounding, they went up for the ball and fumbled it away, only to have it go out of bounds of an opponent. An ugly performance still resulted in a 79-68 overtime victory for K-State, who now takes a week off before meeting Alabama at Kansas City's Sprint Center.
K-State Volleyball
K-State's surprise run to the NCAA Sweet 16 came to a skidding stop on Friday night as the Wildcats were swept by Pepperdine in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
College Football
The Heisman was finally awarded to the right player. Robert Griffin III of Baylor is this year's Heisman winner. He also wore Superman socks (with a cape y'all!) to the ceremony.
Kevin Sumlin will lead Texas A&M into the SEC.

I saw this just as Banks was running around celebrating
and assumed he had run a punt or kickoff back. Then I saw the replay and realized he threw the TD pass on a reverse. Pretty nifty. I didn’t realize he was a lefty until just yesterday. I guess we never saw him throw while at KSU.
I agree jtarkman, not a bad looking pass for someone that small (and while running).

In my league
PPR league, WITH return yardage counting, Sproles is far more valuable. He is actually one of the top 5 RB when you include return yardage (the PPR also helps tremendously).
And Jordy is pretty dang nice to have on my team this year as well.

So Charlie Weis' job is to poison Bill Snyder. Got it.
And did I read somewhere that Weis’ contract is 5 years, $2.5M guaranteed per year?
And the comments to that article by KU fans were hilarious
Absolutely delusional in terms of their “greatness” at everything. 1-15 in the last 16 major athletic competitions doesn’t have them the least bit humble towards us. Laughable.
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
They bring up the "history" they have on their side
plus the basketball championships that have oh-so-much to do with football.
As one poster put on there, if it happened before these kids were born/became cognizant of football, most really don’t care. They see KSU as a top 25 program under Snyder that had a hiccup in the mid-late 00’s, but is back in the picture yet again. KU is a program that had one good year in 2007 but hasnt been able to replicate that before or since, and is now on its third coach in four years. Yeah, KU may own the overall record against KSU, but since 1990 it is decidedly in K-State’s favor.
Its the same argument in reverse for basketball. Until 1990, the two schools were pretty even and went back-and-forth on owning the Big 6/7/8 crown (with Mizzou and OU sprinkled inbetween). But once Lonny left it went downhill in a hurry, and has only become a good rivalry since Beasley and Pullen showed up on campus. Recruits and media see only the last 15-20 years, and so see KU and the better program by a wide margin. I even thought as much growing up, until I actually learned the history of the K-State BBall program.
Its all about recent perception Baby!!!
History is such a funny thing when it comes to a lot of KU fans
It seems as if they are very quick to quote history when it is in their favor (basketball championships, overall football record, etc), yet when KSU fans try to use history as an argument, many KU fans will pull out the old “but who cares what happened in the past, I’m talking about THIS year” argument.
Which, as MJK brings up, even this is turning into an argument they can’t really fall back on anymore. Sure I would like to win in Allen Fieldhouse again, but if the KSU-KU series turns into KSU winning everything except for the basketball game in Lawrence every year, I won’t be complaining at all.

I love when KU fans bring up the overall head-to-head record in football.
Because before 1990 it only means that they were the second worst football program in FBS. Quite the achievement.

Yes, guaranteed $2.5 mil (without incentives)
I believe that’s more than Gill was making.
I asked my brother-in-law (who happens to be a KU grad) this weekend what he thought of all of this. What do the fans think about all of this spending when they are still paying on Lew’s contract and Mangino’s contract prior to all of this, and now Gill’s contract, and then signing Weis for even more than Gill, and for another 5 years.
I asked him what happens if Weis doesn’t win enough, andf in 3 years they decide to try someone else.
He had no answers for me. I think he is pretty disgusted at this point, but doesn’t want to really let it show and give all of us Wildcats in the family any additional ammo with which to give him a hard time.

I'm not impressed so far -
“"I don’t have that answer, but that’s what I’m here for. I’m here to figure out why that is and see what we’re going to do to change that. And that’s really the bottom line.”
“■ Reasoned that the challenges presented at KU made it "too good of an opportunity to pass up.’’ – uh huh. Like offensive coordinator at Florida is an inferior job to head coach at Basketball U? Right…
Anyway, I think Pan said one way or another Weis won’t be at KU in 5 years. I couldn’t agree more. I understand you could do much worse than to hire someone with Weis’ name recognition, but I think it would be hard to do worse as far as building a long term contender.
Congratulations to the VolleyCats for their season. Picked 8th, finished 4th, advanced to sweet 16? That sounds like a very good season to me, and one I would like to see out of Franks’ team too.

Well, he fits right in.
His “This is the University of…” comment smacks of the same arrogance we hear from fans of the so-called flagship all the time.
Its hard to be the flagship of anything
when your older “little” brother is the one that is having record enrollments year after year, is gaining national attention with its academic “K-State 2025” growth program, nearly swept the field athletically last year (and has already begun that process this year), is not receiving negative media attention due to scandals and firings, and is generally trending upwards.
K-State is the bigger, hotter school in the state right now, and that’s a fact. If current leadership stays in place for 10 or so more years, you’ll see K-State solidify that position and will get the recognition and THE Kansas State University (though we wont call it that because we’re not pretentious)…

Probably out for "health" reasons...
which actually wouldnt surprise me.
And I’ve said before, I dont mind them being 6-6/7-5 on a regular basis, just as long as one of those losses is to the Cats. KU being good(ish) only helps K-State and the Big 12
Yep
Good enough to make it to a bowl every few years.
Heck, even a 5-7 team would help the conference more than consistently being 2-10 year in and year out (although that would be rather humorous).

KU will likely always have more students and a larger budget than KSU because of the medical and law schools which bloat the number of "graduate students" and money in the budget
KU will also likely always have a larger endowment than KSU.

Very true, but undergraduate enrollment is what most kids in Kansas see
and what is more important to the people of Kansas in general. Yeah, big time graduate programs help your bottom line, but K-State is educating more Kansas kids even in the major graduate programs (like Vet Med), which IMO is way more important to the state.
Also true on endowment, unless we can find our own T. Boone Pickens…
I agree that K-State will have a hard time ever catching KU in endowment.
That’s what happens when the state gives one university the two marquee professional schools, law and medical.
Unless NBAF counts...
It won’t, but it sure would help the numbers. Even Iowa State (which is bigger than KSU) smokes KSU’s endowment. Boo.

NBAF doesn't count for endowment.
I’d like to see a world though where Pharma companies donate to the Foundation to set up endowments to pay some salaries of NBAF researchers that are teaching a class, involve grad students, etc, etc. That could boost the ’ole endowment.

I find it insulting that they even think their the flagship institution
Simply by definition they are not the flagship school because there is not a single school under their system in this state.
Bobby Hill: What's a meat examination team?
Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
The other thing
Every part of Charlie Weis’s past indicates that even if he is successful at Kansas, as soon as he gets an offer from a better any other school, he’s going to bolt. So the way I see it, it’s a lose-lose scenario for KU, in which they’d get one or two good seasons, at best before they have to hire another coach.

Plus, Colorado never wavered in its interest in leaving for the Pac. They didn’t say it was because Texas had too much power, or that they got screwed in bowl choices, or that the Pac was better financially. They just wanted to go smoke pot with the West Coast hippies. And, historic affiliation aside, they were the worst cultural fit in the Big 12.
Mizzou, on the other hand, fits best culturally in the Big 12. I’d say Big Ten would be the runner-up (and the only reason I can think Nebraska got in ahead of Mizzou is their football “name brand”). I really think SEC is the third best fit for Mizzou, and only because of geography.
CU's not a slut
They had a crush on that liberal hippie pot-smoking dude from California for forever. Missouri on the other hand went steady with the Big 12, threw itself at the Big 10, and then wound up with the SEX conference. Tell me Missouri isn’t a tramp!

I think pretty much any potential coach would see the KU job
as one that is “too good to pass up”…well, and coach with any kind of name recognition that can warrant a $2+ million/year salary. Because, as history has shown, KU is willing to pay those salaries, and when things don’t work out, they will honor the contract.
Yes it sucks that Gill didn’t have better success, and was fired. He seems like a good guy, and I do feel kind of bad for him, but do any of you really think HE is sitting at home crying his eyes out right now??? He gets a cool $2 mil for the next 3 years for sitting home watching Sportscenter every day. I would be happy to do that for 1/10th of what he is getting paid.

Thanks
not sure I agree with their decision, but it is a business and this year was crap compared to last year (and expectations for this one). I think he’s getting a raw deal based on the buttload of injuries to star players and the loss of a good OC (for the NFL) from last year.
Hopefully they can lure Bill Cowher out of retirement, but since that is largely doubtful, I would take a star D-Coordinator from somewhere good (like the Ravens or Steelers)
The injuries should have bought him another year
The only explanation for this firing, IMO, is that Haley’s incendiary personality must have gotten to the point where the owner decided “he has to go, sooner or later”, and he decided “sooner.”
This is a step back for the Chiefs. KC pro sports just suck (except for soccer, and who cares).
oh hail the Purple and White
In reality, yes, the injuries should have gotten him another year
but to me (someone who doesn’t even pay close attention to NFL), it seemed rather obvious from the pre-season games (before any of the injuries had occurred), that the offense was pretty awful.
One of my friends who does follow NFL pretty closely said this is because after Weis left, Haley insisted on being the OC and he is just not as good of an offensive mind as he thinks he is.
I stayed away from all Chiefs offensive players in fantasy football this year, and I can now say that was probably not a bad decision.

He had the same problem in his first year
with similar results. He had play-makers in Phoenix in the skill positions, and that helped him out a TON. Without those guys, his offensive philosophy just isnt very good.
Norv Turner really looks dumb after this season
considering how Sproles has shined with the Saints. I always said that I wished Sproles would get more touches in SD, but Turner seemed pretty dead-set against that notion.

Turner is an Al Davis kind of coach
only sees tangibles like height and weight and speed, not how good of a football player someone is. Sproles found a MUCH better situation in New Orleans with a coach that is concerned with having good players and using their talents properly.
Losing Jamall Charles and Moeaki
doomed this offense.
He has personality issues. He can’t get along with anyone.
oh hail the Purple and White
I agree, losing them didn't help, for sure
but in the pre-season (I know it is pre-season and doesn’t matter), he was still only giving Jamaal like 4 touches a game. He is the best damn player on your offense, and you only give him 4 touoches in the game?!?! WTF???

Using the average of $130 (tickets are $120 and $140) and multiplying by 17,500 = $2.275 million dollars that the Sucralose Bowl is charging VA-Tech to be in the game.
The unsold tickets (8163) are worth approximately 1,061,190 dollars that VA-Tech would have to pay the Surcralose Bowl if they don’t sell the tickets.
Tickets on Stubhub are $50 in the nosebleed section and the price climbs as you go lower in section, although you can get lower level seats for $170-ish.
Most likely VA-Tech fans are buying tickets through outlets other than the school, since they are cheaper. Which means the school is likely going to have to eat some of the tickets and possibly lose money on attending the Surcralose Bowl.

Wonder how many takers they are getting on the "proxy-tickets" at $120 a pop ...
well … no, I’m not.

Well, we know of at least some from the article
The coaches. So, that’s what at least 6 tickets, and as many as 30? Awesome. LOL!

BOYCOTT ESPN!
So I'll go ahead and mention it...
Congrats to RGIII. He deserved the Heisman and was rewarded justly. And now for my commentary. Thank you to all the voters for kicking K-State in the jewels once again. It seems the 1998 campaign is the crappy gift that keeps on giving. I’ll say it, Downtown Athletic Club you blew it. If RGIII deserved the Heisman this year than Michael Bishop should have won the award in 1998. I won’t bore anyone with comparative stats but Bishop was the best player that year. Only he did not play for Texas and set a career rushing record so he got the shaft.

For some reason
I always forget Ricky Williams won it that year.
Bobby Hill: What's a meat examination team?
Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
I think is it more a slap in the face that Crouch won it and Bishop did not.
Crouch’s stats are pretty bad. And it was only 3 years removed.
Whereas RG3 is at least a decade later and you could make the claim that the Heisman voters are more informed/changed significantly from 1998, you could not make that same argument for 2001 compared to 1998.
Would you like some Freys with that?
