Missouri's Move to the SEC Is Official
The University of Missouri will join the Southeastern Conference on July 1, 2012, becoming the conference's 14th school. It's official this time, no more false starts and rumors.
With Missouri's defection, the Big 12 is officially down to 10 schools for next season, with Texas Christian replacing Texas A&M and West Virginia replacing Missouri. Regardless of your feelings about the way Missouri has handled this situation, it's never a good thing when a school who has been a member of some form of the Big 12 for many decades leaves.
So long, Missouri. Goodbye, Unholy Alliance. Vaya con dios, Border War. And worst, hasta la vista, Big 12 basketball tournament at Sprint Center.

The Big East can't force West Virginia to stay
The Mountaineers will be playing in the Big 12 next year. It’s just a matter of how must they’ll have to pay the Big East.

The Big East doesn't have a police force.
They can’t call out BEPD or the BE National Guard to force WVU’s teams to play Rutgers and UConn. West Virginia has told them it’s leaving, so it’s just a matter of the price tag now.

Well...
A court could order WVU to play a Big East schedule. I don’t see it happening, but it’s possible.

For the lawyers out there, is there any sort of precedent like this?

I'm a 1st year student who hasn't taken contracts yet
But a judge ordering an enforcement of a contract doesn’t sound too far-fetched to me.
Take contracts
Then come back.
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.
I'm in my second year and had contracts last year
When a court forces someone to follow through on a contract it’s called specific performance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_performance
If I recall correctly courts don’t like to use specific performance as a remedy unless paying damages won’t serve justice no matter how much $$. I’m sure some of the lawyers on here with actual experience can elaborate or correct me.
You're exactly right
Which is why Tohoya is wrong (and I’m in no way trying to be a dick, it just is what it is. If we all were born knowing everything we wouldn’t have to go to school). Not his fault as he will learn as you did in Contracts, while specific performance is an available remedy, money will satisfy in this instance. Unless TV contracts are effected, then all bets are off. As TB said, that (specific performance) COULD happen, but it’s unlikely.

Yeah, that could happen

Anticlimatic
Good luck to MU but I’ll never root for them in SEC since I have ties to other schools and they aren’t playing the only school who’s opponents I root for.
Wonder how much money we get for aTm and MU leaving?

Good for Mizzou, I guess. And even better for the Big 12.
We don’t need anyone that doesn’t want to be here. And make no mistake, the move to the SEC was more about getting out of the Big 12 than wanting to play in the SEC. We know what conference Mizzou wants to be in, and it isn’t the SEC.
Besides, who wanted a 10-game conference slate next year with 11 teams? Anyone?

I still don’t get it, but I have no hard feelings toward you. You wanted out, you got it. We found someone who wants to be here. Best of luck to ya keeping up your mediocre pedigree elsewhere. Now that you’re leaving, if I’m to be honest, your M-I-Z cheer was starting to get annoying anyway.

I’ll miss my $1 Freezoni slushy from QT between sessions at the Sprint Center during the tournament as well.

Can anyone confirm the ABC 2:30 slot for us against aTm saturday? It looked as though the networks saw no need to air Mediocrity at home against UT, and gave them the 11 spot. Thought I saw that somewhere, but unsure. Looking for an official press release somewhere.

I'm disappointed for KC's sake.
But MU for West Virginia seems like a fair trade. The travel will suck, but I never went to a game in Columbia anyway. I also think this is great for K-State’s rivalry with KU….
It's spectacular for the KSU/ku rivalry ...
And spectacularly sucks for KC. The BigXII Basketball Tournament belonged in KC for good. It was a truly great event again once it was downtown in the Sprint Center.
Nevertheless, though I am a Kansas Citian, the thought of the BigXII having a major event inside Missouri’s borders is a sick joke. It’s unbelievable the state of denial that Mizzou fans on the west side of the state are in. They actually see no problem with the tournament staying in KC. Dumbasses.

Agreed
I’m thinking the basketball tourney ends up in Oklahoma City. Anywhere not in Texas would be cool with me.
by williewildcrack on Nov 6, 2011 8:09 PM CST up reply actions
I know the thought of it ever ending up in Wichita is just a bit embarrassing to have shown
on TV at halftimes across the country, but being a native Wichitan (well sorta, outside the city limits), I have a few thoughts…
1. If the city could just get a chance to host it say 1 out of every 7 years (Like the amount Dallas got to), the city would do everything in its power to try and impress as much as possible, and I think they would succeed. If they fail, they will fall back to being Wichita.
2. A lot of people say it wouldn’t attract any people. Ummm, it’s under 2.5hrs drive from 4 conference schools, and as long as Travis Ford and Lon Kruger don’t have teams ranked lower than 6th, their fans will come. In fact there are plenty of OU fans there (probably #3 in the town). And as long as KU is ranked 4th or better, the place will be jam packed for every one of their games. If KU basketball is that close, do you really think for 1 second they’d say “no thanks, I’m not going to Wichita”. Even those snobs would look past it and travel because they love their basketball.
3. And lastly you have us K-staters. I was at the State Fair just 2 years ago for the first time in probably 10-15 years and I was super refreshed with how many people were wearing purple there. Face it, draw a square from the top NE corner of our state down to Topeka and roughly everywhere else is polluted with K-state fans. I don’t think attendance would be a problem.
With that said, I’d like to reiterate what I wrote in my subject line. It would be embarrassing for the big12 if half time watchers of the Big East tourney (well that might not be as great as it is now in a few years) in New York to get a live look in at the Big 12 tourney in Wichita, KS. For that reason alone, I don’t know if I want that for our conference. But like I said, I’d only push for something like once every 7 years with the other 6 in Oklahoma City.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I really hope that it is in KS at least every other year
I think it helps the conference have more balance.

I would be okay with a three year rotation
Wichita-OKC-Dallas
And, also being from the Wichita-area, I enjoy when the middle of the state gets some love. So many people see KC-Lawrence-Topeka and ignore the rest. I have oft had discussions with people who live west of Shawnee county about how nice it would be for the rest of us if Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas, and Shawnee would just go somewhere else (obviously not good economically, or for any other reason than it would make us feel better and would make Wichita the state capital).
I'd propose a 6-1-1
6 out of every 8 would be in OKC, 1 in Wichita, 1 in Dallas.
I would think this would stimulate Wichita’s Downtown masterplan which connects the Riverfront development to the Arena and the Arena to Old Town. It sort of makes a L shape, walkable between the other two areas.
Rotation would be something like 2yrs in OKC, 1 in Wichita, 2yrs in OKC, 1 in Dallas, 2yrs in OKC…then start over or somehing
I used to make fun of Wichita growing up, but working in Topeka for 3.25 years, Wichita is a damn nice nice nice town. Great place to raise a fam. And in the last 5 years it’s really done a lot to help itself and it has some stuff going for itself these days.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I guess that would be better described as a 4-1-1
As it would start over after Dallas
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I know this is heresy, but
if we stay at a ten team league (which is my prediction), and we play a true round-robin schedule, I think we should do away with the post season tourney. Instead, we should have two pre-season tourneys (one in KC and one in Dallas, Houston, etc. Have five B/12 schools at each site, invite 3 premier teams from other leagues to each site, and have a tourney.
Just something to think about. But an 18 game regular season schedule, plus a post season league tourney, will get very boring after awhile, IMO. Plus, too much beating up on each other.

I understand the sentiment
but I think this will cool over time. Many residents of Ks benefit from the economic activity around the Sprint Center. I just think, in the long run, we need to face the fact that it will benefit KSU and KU and IaState to keep an association with the rich basketball history of KC, and that will mean we need to keep scheduling events there. We will only be hurting our programs if we hold onto this bitterness of the “state” of Missouri.
oh hail the Purple and White
It's about keeping economic impact within the footprint of the conference ...
as much as anything. You don’t ship millions upon millions of dollars of economic impact out of the conference footprint of a ton of state-funded schools.
It will never happen in any future agreements.
Find a way to fund a new state of the art arena at the speedway or at I-35 and 119th street and it’s back in KC for good. Otherwise, it’s not happening. Period.
I think it’s going to be in OKC, Dallas, and maybe San Antonio for the forseeable future (past any current agreements expiration).
by Itchy n Scratchy on Nov 7, 2011 11:39 AM CST up reply actions
I agree a post season tourney will not be in KC
and shouldn’t be. I am just saying I think KSU, KU and Ia.State should be creative in keeping an identity with “Kansas City” and all of its history in relation to college basketball, despite hard feelings toward the state of Missouri.
I believe that state boundaries are rather archaic markers for who benefits from economic activity. As a long time resident of Johnson County, I can assure you I know many Kansas business folks who put money in their pocket because of stuff that happens in Kansas City, Mo. That benefits the state of Kansas in the long run.
oh hail the Purple and White
It has nothing to do with bitterness,
it is simple economics and business development.
Every state in the Big12 would rather have the money spent (and associated taxes) in their state rather than in a state which is no longer in the conference.
There are enough venues in IA, KS, OK and TX, not to mention WV that there is no need to have the tournament outside the footprint.
I like the idea of the preseason tournaments. Maybe Charleston, WV; Wichita, KS, OKCOK and San Antonio, TX are cities I think would make good hosts with maybe a rotating schedule. Even Des Moines could be a good choice over time.

I would have to be convinced how Sprint Center Activity
helps me West of the Speedway. Unless fractions of the parking at the parking garages, part of the tax at P&L drinking/eating establishments, and part of the tickets to the event go towards the State of KS, I see no way that benefits Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Douglass, Miami, Franklin or Johnson counties. Not to mention the scenario I outlined would only benefit the “many residents of KS” would only fractionally benefit.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
outside the box, but not all that bad of an idea
Not in 100% agreement, but still not a bad idea
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I think the avearage fan might be more likely to travel for the
post season arrangement rather than pre-season if you knew there was an outside chance of punching a ticket to the big dance.
Compare to trying to convince someone in Iowa to sacrifice their christmas shopping if before Xmas (most people are generally busy in December), or pick between a bowl trip if after Xmas to come and watch a 8-0 Iowa State team ( comprisedtypical non-con schedule of N. Iowa, Lipscomb State and such) in say Wichita.
Plus why beat yourself up before the gauntlet for a pre-season trophy, rather than beat yourself up after the gauntlet at 18-12 giving all you got to try and not wind up in the NIT?
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Yes, pre-season is still in the middle of FB and bowl travel
Fans are more likely to be thinking about traveling for basketball around march madness.
Although it is an interesting outside-the-box idea. I’ll have to think about it some more.
The only people who are that embarrassed by Wichita tend to be Wichitans.,,
…it amazes me how many times I talk to people from other cities and who do a lot of traveling how impressed they are by Wichita.
That being said, the biggest barrier to the B12 tournament being in Wichita is Intrust Arena itself. At 13,400 seating capacity, it just isn’t that big.
by apewatcher on Nov 7, 2011 12:58 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
I thought it was closer to 15,000
I’m not that embarrassed by it. I think I outlined my thoughts well, that as a kid I thought it was bad, but when moving to college found out how great it was. Plus in the last 5 years it’s done a lot for itself. But I worry more about nat’l pereception. It’s insane what some of the people from the coasts think about the area between Denver-Dallas-Minneapolis-St. Louis. It’s as if nothing exists in that rectangle.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
That is a problem any city in a "flyover" state has.
And Texas is included in that. I used to work for Infoition, which is a news compilation service that serves US politicians and businesses. We would have to list the title of the newspaper where we got the information in our system so people could know where a story came from before following a link.
Big publication like The Washington Post or the New York Times that were in big cities did not have to have the state listed in the title. This would also apply for Seattle or Miami, for instance. The basic premise was, if you didn’t live in that areas, would the city name be obvious?
Well, I didn’t list TX after putting in a story from the Austin American-Statesman. Apparently nobody on the coast knows where Austin is because I was asked to include TX on it from that point onward.
In a (meager) defense of coastals, I am from San Diego and I knew where Austin and Topeka and Wichita and such were before I moved out here. But the “upper society” people I think pride themselves on their ignorance of the interior.

there should be enough hotels around Wichita for an event that size
You have lots of places within 30 minutes to an hour of the arena. Unlike Dallas or KC or San Antonio though, you have open space as you travel instead of more city.

As Wichita is the cultural and physical hub
for basically everything west and south of the US 77/I-70 interchange…
There is plenty of things like accommodations and reasonable economic diversions (like Old Town). Plus, in addition to Intrust Arena for the Men, the Women have multiple options in Koch Arena, Hartman Arena, and the KS Coliseum.
And really, if you don’t leave the Kellogg/US 400 corridor there is city for quite a while string in the east with Augusta and going to at least the west side of Goddard. Also, Derby is a decent sized city and is almost connected at this point.
So no, it isnt the KCMO/KCK metroplex, but it is a large (US Top 50) city that shouldn’t be glazed over just because it isnt as glamorous as KC or Dallas, or has NBA facilities like OKC
two corrections
the KS Coliseum no longer holds events, and there are no “nice” hotels close to the arena (which is part of the reason the NCAA passed on having opening round games there)
Not connected
But I’ve stayed at the Hyatt and it’s serviceable. The Hilton next to the turnpike is ok too, but is a 7-10 min drive.
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.
Wow, the conference is going to have 14 schools now. This actually bodes well for the University of Missouri as well. However, what is to say of the fans who go to rival schools, or root for schools not part of SEC that like Missouri?
