College Football Week 10 Open Thread

In some ways, today is an elimination day in the Big 12. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have established themselves as the class of the conference, and anybody hoping to have a chance to at least force a tie at the top of the conference is going to need a win against one of the two. And somebody is going to need to knock off Okie State pretty soon, period, if anyone else is going to have a chance.

Enter the games in Stillwater and Norman today. K-State gets its last chance to get a win over one of the Okie schools and salvage a chance at the conference title. Over in the Oklahoma City suburbs, Oklahoma will try to once and for all put an end to any lingering hope Texas A&M may have of winning the conference.

On the other end of the spectrum, Iowa State has a chance to move within one win of bowl eligibility, while KU gets its only realistic chance at a conference win this season. For one reason, I think a KU win in this game would be good for K-State. If Iowa State gets this win, then the Cyclones will almost certainly arrive in Manhattan on December 3 playing for bowl eligibility. A desperate ISU is a dangerous ISU, and I want no part of a Paul Rhoads/Wally Burnham/Tom Herman coached team that is playing for its very life.

Keep an eye on the Missouri/Baylor game, too. At 4-3, Baylor is in real danger of not achieving bowl eligibility if it can't beat the Tigers at home. The Bears still have KU on the schedule, as well as Texas Tech and UT, but they're having to sweat for a bowl game a lot more than anyone would have thought in September.

This week's Big 12 schedule is below. Check out this week's Buffet for the national action to keep an eye on. Of course, we all know what the biggest game of the week is, and it's taking place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. K-State's game thread will go live one hour before kickoff.

Texas Tech vs. Texas, Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas, 11:00 a.m., FX

KU vs. Iowa State, Jack Trice Stadium, Ames, Iowa, 11:30 a.m., FCS

Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma, Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, Okla., 2:30 p.m., ABC

Missouri vs. Baylor, Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco, Texas, 6:00 p.m., FSN

Impressed with Michigan's O-line.

D-Robinson just shifted around in the pocket for an eternity before throwing that TD pass.

Early thoughts on Texas-TT

I’m not afraid of UT’s designed run plays, we can shut that down. They will make some big pass plays, but they are still pretty raw in that area and will make mistakes too. Ash is a good scrambler, though, so we could get hurt that way.

Defensively, I’m not impressed with their Run-D. So far Tech has been getting 4-5 yards on each carry. Of course, they’ve oly run it like 4 times, so it is a small sample size. Their pass defense is smothering, though. That could be a big problem if they are able to stack the box and still shut down the pass.

In short, if we can get our running game going, we will win that game.

Would you like some Freys with that?

Well, the Texas running game is looking much better in the 2nd quarter.

yea, it's not so much this one game, but if they win 2 in a row here

I probably worry more about the UT mental state than their talent. Once you get that talent believing they are as talented as they’ve been billed, it could be a dangerous combination that I think might be hard to slow down in Austin in 2 weeks. Though I’ll wait and see what occurs here in the 2nd half and the next game which is @ Mizzou. So if they steam roll two teams in a row I’m worried. Though I think Mizzou could fare well at home against the Longhorns. As young as the team is, inconsistency will be our friend prior to locking up with them.

that was my guess

They just choked big time on a great scoring opportunity. Guy had damn near a pick 6. Must have been a block in the back on the return because he went out of bounds at about the 6yd line. Then when the offense had it, they were closer to the 20, I missed something obviously. Anyway, a dropped TD pass, a false start and 2 bad play calls later they shanked a FG from about the 12 yd line from the far hash.

Now that Tech is actually running it, there offense is moving much better

In the first quarter they rushed it 6 times for 20 yards

In the second quarter they rushed it twice for 7 yards.

And yet, according to the announcers, this means that Texas is shutting down Tech’s running game.

I’m pretty sure that Tech is the one shutting down their own running game.

Would you like some Freys with that?

by ChrisP Wildcat on Nov 5, 2011 1:26 PM CDT reply actions

AND

On this TD drive they rushed it 5 times for 18 yards.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It was 5 times, not 15.

And I’m saying that now that they are rushing it their offense was able to move the ball consistently and they scored their first touchdown.

So they should have been rushing it more often the whole game. It’s a little too late to start rushing it alot now.

Would you like some Freys with that?

Where do you get 18 yards from?

When you account for sacks (4 for -28), they have (according to the Yahoo box score) 15 for 38. Still not great, though.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

From what I've seen

Tech has been able to run the ball, they just haven’t actually called that many running plays.

They had a bad stretch in the second quarter where they rushed 4 times, over three drives, for 0 yards.

But other than that they’ve had good yardage on their called running plays.

Would you like some Freys with that?

by ChrisP Wildcat on Nov 5, 2011 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Even accounting for that stretch,

you get 11 carries, for 38 yards, which is a full 2.5 yards less per play than they’re getting through their passing plays. And unlike sacks (which shouldn’t be counted as runs), there’s no reason to just discard those four runs for no gain. At 15 for 38 yards, I can’t say I’d call the game any differently as TTU’s OC.

Still though,

even after accounting for sacks, TTU is averaging 2.5 yards per rushing play, and 5.98 per pass. I can’t really blame them for getting pass-happy.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

If you exclude the 2nd quarter, when they rushed 4 times for 0 yards

Then that is 11 times for 38 yards. That is 3.45 yards a rush. not gret but not bad.

Since this is the only active thread, going to post OSU commentary here.

Spread is -21 and O/U is at 70. I’m taking the Cats to cover and the under.

I heard a lot this week about how OSU’s Defense is on the field a ton (cause their offense is grease lightning) AND how proficient they are at takeaways. What happens to their D if they don’t get TOs?

IF KState can stick to their game plan this week and hold onto the football (would be nice to start with the ball too), I feel like we can be more than competitive. Feels like a game where stick around through the 1st half, tire out their D and hope to catch a couple of big play breaks (on D or ST).

Well I'm not actually betting money

I just have this hunch that the contrarion view point feels right this week.

OSU defense is not good. Win the TO battle and HCBS can scheme doctor (shame face) us to victory.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions

It's a very long shot, but I hope you're right.

I don’t see the under holding, though, if KSU wants to have any shot. Their only chance is to force 3-4 FG-for-TD trades by the OSU offense.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I like the logic ...

I think there’s a shot things can turn out that way. My nightmare for tonight would be that Bill Young has seen enough of our rushing offense to be able to choke it off a little and get us in 3rd and medium-to-long often. This game is on the O. Not fair, but that’s the way it is … maybe the D can force a couple of FGs vs TDs. We just have to keep the OSU on the sideline for unbearable stretches, like we did to Baylor. Unfortunately, OSU’s D is better than Baylor.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Nov 5, 2011 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

If we assume that they have at LEAST 8 scoring drives (and they will)

I think the defense HAS to make at least 3 of those settle for FGs, leaving the Pokes at around 44 points. Our offense, then, would have to counter their 8 dives with at least 6 of our own, none of which could settle for FGs.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

You aren't factoring in

shortened fields from TOs (a must) or greater ST returns (also a must).

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

How would that shift the basic calculus, though?

I can’t see any way OSU doesn’t get 40+ today, even with a couple of big plays on ST. I guess the one way I could see it happening is if Weeden has a pick-fest, and gives us 2-3 free possessions. In that situation, we might pull off some weird 35-34 type of win.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess for us to win I am thinking we need

*at least a +2 in the TO department
*control the time of possession (maximizing our scoring chances)
*pull off the bend but don’t break Defense (hold to FG on at least 2 scoring drives)
*great ST play (both sides to help said Defense win field starting position battle)

You say 35-34 would be weird, why? Weird would be a 17-14 game.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I just think it would be "weird" to see the defense we saw last week,

hold this team under 40 points. Frankly, I’d be surprised a bit if we keep them under 50.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 2:10 PM CDT up reply actions

and to more directly answer your question

It changes the calculus because we are statistically more likely to score on a shorter field and win with more possessions (from TOs).

So yeah, preventing OSU from getting to 40+ seems to be the best (likely only) way to win.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I can agree with that.

But I also think that holding OSU under 40 has a probability approaching zero.

"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

by K.S.B. on Nov 5, 2011 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Have to keep Weeden in check

Texas and A&M kept them under 40 (barely)

Obviously, every positive statement in this entire comments section is farfetched and unlikely to occur, but why be so pessimistic and negative BEFORE the game. We have no control over the outcome.

by xrayxtals on Nov 5, 2011 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to see us win the toss ...

Take the ball … drive 80 yards in 8+ minutes, scoring a TD.

Then forced a fumble on an OSU WR on the ensuing possession … take it in for another 7 (after another 3+ minutes, of course). 14-0.

Of course, I’d just settle for winning the toss and taking the ball first for a change. I’m getting pretty tired of these hyper-potent offenses getting the ball on us first and being down 7-0 after 2 minutes of game time.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Nov 5, 2011 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really think there's a shot we win under xray's scenario ... I think there's a shot we cover.

And depending on how long we can keep the ball on O, a decent shot to force the under 70.

But if the O isn’t on it’s rushing game, this game is going over 70 and KSU is losing by more than 21.

by Itchy n Scratchy on Nov 5, 2011 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

We’ll struggle with losing recruits to Oklahoma. It’s under 2.5hr drive or less to Lawrence, Manhattan, Stillwater and Norman from Wichita, so a wash in all directions. KSU will start having to be a perennial 15th ranked team to keep all recruits from leaving Wichita

Evidently, he got in some trouble fairly serious trouble early in his time at OU, before making some serious changes in his life. He’s now the type of guy who works relief missions to Haiti and that type of thing. Just seems like a guy who, if he played for our team, would be pretty easy to root for.

1:43 left

Take two shots at it. If you don’t get it, Nebraska has to go at least 70 yards, into the wind, to have a chance at a tying field goal.
